Public Kickoff for Reimagine 9th Street --- a project bringing together neighborhoods.

Project Description: This project will transform 9th Street/Roy Wilkins Avenue just west of the downtown Louisville from the Main Street to Broadway from a six-lane thoroughfare with extremely wide right-of-way into a "Complete Street". Improvements to be considered during the Design process include: Reduce the number and width of lanes, convert one-way traffic to two-way (with a two-way left turn lane) on Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Chestnut Street/River Park Drive, eliminate negative offset left-turn lanes, adequately dimensioned turn bays, traffic signal upgrades, expanded fiber throughout the corridor, protected/permissive left turn signals, sidewalk expanded up to 20-feet wide, curb extensions, pedestrian refuge islands, pedestrian scale lighting, crosswalk visibility enhancements, tabled intersections, protected bike lanes, improved signage, bus shelters, kiosks with real-time bus information, dedicated bus lanes, bus bulbs, increased tree canopy, bioswales, and improved storm drainage.

Project Purpose: Eliminate the physical and psychological barrier that the "9th Street divide" creates between Louisville's Central Business District and the West End neighborhoods; create a safe and accessible travel experience for all users including pedestrians, cyclists and transit riders; increase economic vitality through creating a safe, attractive and comfortable environment; provide opportunities for parks and open spaces, playgrounds, recreation access, street tree canopy and storm water management features; and provide a safe and efficient corridor for vehicle and freight travel.
Katrina Hardison recently joined our PWA team as Administrative Coordinator, working directly with Director Caummisar-Kern. Katrina started her Metro career with the Human Relations Commission Office as an Administrative Assistant in March of 2020. In December 2021 she moved to the Office of Housing/Office of Art as an Administrative Coordinator.
"I have 4 dogs, two sons (Kyle & Rexton) and married for 8 years to my awesome hubby Justin. In my spare time you can find me reading a book, in my craft room getting crafty, sitting by the pool or on the lake," said Katrina.
Some of her responsibilities in her new role with our team scheduling meetings for Director Caummisar- Kern, helping with meeting planning, assisting with registration for conferences and A LOT more.

Louisville Metro Government supports local businesses by providing opportunities to contract for many of its goods and services. Public Works contractor Louisville Paving has shut down Holsclaw Hill Rd. to replace a culvert in very poor condition. Currently message boards are in place to alert the public of the closure.  Solid Waste Education staff wants residents to "be cart smart!" Garbage and recycling carts are often left in the collection area (in the alley or near the curb) all week, which can lead to broken carts, stolen/missing carts, and more litter.
Some areas may find a Be Cart Smart tag on their garbage cart. The tips listed on the tag will help extend the life of the cart, keep your neighborhood clean, and are based on Solid Waste ordinances:

Bring it in! Carts are often stolen, damaged, or used by others if left out. Bring your carts back onto your property and store in a secure location after collection.

Don’t overload! The cart shouldn’t be too heavy and the lid must be able to close. This helps keep it from getting damaged during collection.

Identify it! Write your address on your cart and take a photo of the serial number located on its side so you can easily identify it as yours.

Keep it clean! Simply rinse your cart with soap and water from time to time.

Repairs are free! If your cart gets damaged, request a repair at Louisvilleky.gov/Carts. If it’s beyond fixing, it’ll be replaced instead.

Use the dropdown menu to choose your items. Only write a description or use "other" options if necessary. Our crews will only collect the items on their list they receive from admin staff.  Our first Pop-Up Drop-Off event will be on Saturday, March 16, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Please do not arrive early as we will not allow vehicles into the parking lot until it starts. Be sure to have all your items separated into categories for easy off-loading. As dates are finalized, the schedule will be added to Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps.
Recycling and yard waste will be collected every other week until March 11 when weekly yard waste collection resumes.
