Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I imagine many of you are making preparations for the Super Bowl this weekend. Whether you're going to be part of a large gathering or planning on staying at home with family (I fall into the latter group!), I hope you have a great time. The last two Super Bowls have been really entertaining games - here's hoping Sunday's game is as well!

I wanted to focus my comments today on a topic that many residents are introduced to at some point or another - land use. As the map below shows, most of our area is zoned residential. What happens when someone proposes to change a property's zoning classification? Who is told of land use plans and when? Does this process include discussions with MSD, TARC, JCPS, etc. with an eye towards the next 15-20 years? Is the planning process itself too short (or too lengthy)? If you've been involved with this at all, you've probably considered these sorts of questions and have some thoughts on how all this can be improved.

To address this issue, I announced earlier this week the formation of an Ad Hoc Land Use Committee. This committee, separate from the Metro Council's Planning and Zoning Committee, is tasked with doing an in-depth analysis of our land use process. It will conduct research on best practices and identify strategies that can be turned into a list of recommendations for consideration by the Metro Council (or leaders in Frankfort, potentially). District 9 Councilman Andrew Owen (chair) and District 25 Councilman Khalil Batshon (vice-chair) will guide the committee. The first meeting is scheduled to occur within the next few weeks.

Right now, it seems like too many people believe the process is lacking. Some residents feel they aren't being heard. Developers want a more consistent, efficient process. My hope is that this committee will present us with actionable items that will make this an easier, fairer process for everyone involved. I'll keep you updated on the progress.

As always, please let me know if my office can be of assistance in any way. Have a great weekend!

Old Henry Road Signal Improvements

Old Henry Road improvements

The traffic signal improvements along Old Henry Road stretch from Nelson Miller Parkway to Bush Farm Road.

Louisville Metro Public Works recently deployed new traffic signal controllers along the KY-3084 (Old Henry Road) corridor between Nelson Miller Parkway and Bush Farm Road. This project incorporates new coordinated signal timing patterns in an effort to address recent developments along the corridor. Traffic engineers will conduct field visits over the next few weeks to make timing adjustments as needed. Your patience is appreciated as they continue working to address safety and operational efficiency on one of our fastest-growing corridors.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These requests can include changes in zoning, variances, conditional use permits, and more. There is one new application in this week's report associated with property in our district, a waiver to allow a changing image sign within 300 feet of a residential use. The address in question is 9501 Westport Road. Please contact the case manager at heather.pollock@louisvilleky.gov with any questions or comments.
