Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you are staying bundled up in these cold temperatures, though it looks like they won't last much longer as somewhat warmer days are predicted for next week.

Things are still mostly quiet downtown as we have not yet gotten fully into the 2024 session. Committees and committee members were announced this week. They will begin working in earnest next week with our first round of committee meetings.

Looking ahead, I wanted to share some of my priorities for our district in 2024. First, we'll continue supporting more officers for LMPD, a long-standing priority of mine. Second, we'll be working closely with our Homeless Services Division (and our 8th Division here as well) to address some of the issues we're seeing in this area - encampments, people approaching vehicles in the roadway, etc.

I am also very much focused on investments in our built environment. We have money in the budget for streetscape improvements along Westport Road specifically designed to address the deteriorating medians near the Gene Snyder Freeway. These are eyesores that need to be improved. We are also working with the state to get on/off ramp beautification work done as the I-Move project wraps up. As I have said before, keeping our area's retail corridors attractive is critical to our property values. We don't want these retailers looking for a more attractive location elsewhere leaving a massive empty retail space. Investments in streetscapes, lighting, etc., coupled with proactive patrols from LMPD, are critical to keeping our area desirable.

We have also gotten significant money for park improvements in Berrytown Park and Hounz Lane Park. I am excited to see these projects move forward, so that we can have some of the best parks in the city. Speaking of parks, we also have plans for a multi-use path connecting Wemberley Hills and Sawyer Place to Tom Sawyer Park. Approval for this path is making its way through the process at the state level, and I'm hopeful we can get this project going later this year.

Finally, we have several road and sidewalk projects requested by residents that we'll work to get added to this year's budget. There is still a lot of time between now and when we pass the budget in June, so if there are things important to you that you think we should be investing in, please let me know.

I hope you have a great weekend. As always, please don't hesitate to call if I can be of any service.
