Louisville Metro Animal Services Waiving Adoption Fees Through the End of December

In response to the staggering rise in the number of pets seeking loving homes this holiday season, Louisville Metro Animal Services, #YourCityShelter, is delighted to announce the extension of free adoptions through the end of December 2023. The decision comes as the shelter faces an alarming surge of additional animals, highlighting the critical need to find homes for these animals and alleviate the strain on the shelter system.
Louisville Metro Animal Services recognizes the urgency of addressing this crisis and is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these animals. By extending the free adoptions, the shelter aims to encourage community members to open their hearts and homes to a new furry friend during this season of hope.
Free adoptions include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and a microchip. Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter to get matched with a new furry friend.
#Yourcityshelter is calling on the community to spread the word, volunteer their time, and consider adopting a homeless dog or cat in need. By working together, we can make a significant impact and give these animals the chance for a brighter future.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Vaccine Information

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that spreads throughout our community each year. RSV season usually begins in the fall, peaks in the winter, and decreases during early spring. It typically causes mild illness in most people, but it can cause severe breathing problems in infants and young children. Newborns and children with certain medical conditions are more likely to develop serious infection, be hospitalized, and die from RSV infection. The RSV vaccine can be given to pregnant people to protect their newborns or young infants from the severe effects of RSV infection.
The RSV vaccine can be given between the 32nd and 36th week of pregnancy. The vaccine produces antibodies in the pregnant person’s body that are transferred to the child through the placenta, offering newborns up to 6 months of protection from RSV after birth. A vaccine decision tool was created to help pregnant people determine if the RSV vaccine is right for them and their child. If you are pregnant and interested in receiving the RSV vaccine, check out the decision tool and speak with your obstetrician. One advantage of receiving the vaccine while you are pregnant is that your baby is protected from the time of birth.
Did You Know You Can Donate to the SW Library?
|
The Library receives gently-used or new donated materials on behalf of the Friends of the Louisville Free Public Library. The Friends of the Library then allows the Library to select any items it needs to add to the collections at the Main and branch libraries. Materials not selected for the Library’s collection are then sold by the Friends at public sales.
Proceeds from the sale of donated materials support special Library activities including the Read With Me reading program for preschoolers, parents and caregivers and scholarships for library employees. To join the Friends of the Library, call (502) 574-1648 or ask for membership information at any library. You can drop donations off at any of our locations. If you would like a tax deduction slip, just ask one of the staff and they can assist you. We accept the following donations:

Gun Violence Dashboard is Now Live

The city’s new “Metro Gun Violence Dashboard” is now live on OSHN’s Louisvilleky.gov website.
The dashboard is a real-time, comprehensive reporting tool that will expand government transparency and will aim to create more collaborative work opportunities with and within the Louisville community.
The dashboard is a collaborative project between OSHN and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and was funded with a $100,000 competitive grant from the national Everytown for Safety Support Fund.
The dashboard will use data from Mark 43, LMPD’s record management system and will show a variety of reporting elements. For example, it will show maps and trends on where shots are fired, where homicides and non-fatal shootings happen, literal neighborhood and block reports, and historic, comparative, and detailed data starting from the year 2010.
It will give anonymized information on victims of gun violence, trend reports and provides an array of measurements, including, for example, what is shown as the likeliest or most common times and/or days for violence.
