Louisville Metro Hall closes early today, at 1 p.m., and will be closed Monday, December 25 for Christmas. 

Waste collection

There will be no residential waste collection in the Urban Services District on Monday, December 25 or Monday, January 1. All services will be on a one-day delay. Use the Recycle Coach app to stay informed about holiday changes. 

Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies for holiday collection schedules.

Holiday Closings

The three staffed recycling locations, Waste Reduction Center, and Haz Bin, will be closed on December 23 and December 30 in observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day. 

Christmas Tree Composting

Starting Tuesday, December 26, Christmas tree drop-off sites will be available for all Louisville/Jefferson County residents at three locations. The Hubbards Lane site will also instantly recycle Christmas trees into mulch that will be offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it. All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are dropped off. Christmas tree vendors may recycle their unsold trees on Tuesday, December 26 only, and only at the Hubbards Lane site.

Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District after the holiday. Residents with city yard waste collection may set their Christmas trees and greenery out on their regular collection day. Trees may not be in plastic bags and all decorations must be removed.  Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see if and when tree pickup is available.

Respiratory viruses are on the rise here - hand washing and surface cleaning aid in prevention

Respiratory viruses continue to spike in Jefferson County. Check out the Kentucky Respiratory Illness dashboard, which shows respiratory diseases such as RSV, COVID-19 and influenza. 

To help prevent these illnesses, clean all surfaces such as countertops, door handles, and light switches frequently, wash your hands with soap and water, avoid close contact with people who are sick, and cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue and not your hands.

Be sure to stay up to date on your vaccines, too. LMPHW provides vaccines for children and adults at its immunization clinics by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call 574-5380. 

PARC offering $3 weekend garage parking downtown throughout December

The Parking Authority of River City (PARC) is offering downtown visitors discounted parking rates at its garages during the holiday season. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in December, drivers can enjoy a special daily parking rate of $3 by prepaying for parking at parcdaypass.com. The program covers the following PARC locations and destinations:  Jefferson Street garage – Whiskey Row 8th/Main Street garage – Museum Row Market Street garage – Derby City Gaming and the West Market Street corridor Louisville Gardens garage – Jefferson Square Seelbach garage – 4th Street Live/4th Street corridor

evolve502 enrolls JCPS graduates in a two-year tuition-free postsecondary education opportunity. In the first three years evolve502 enrolled more than 1,500 JCPS graduates in college at Jefferson or Simmons College of Kentucky; 72 of those students live in District 10 and 23 of those are from the class of 2023. Creating access to postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce are critical to our community’s future success and evolve502 is working with students, families and partners every day.

Louisville Metro Animal Services waiving adoption fees through the end of December

In response to the staggering rise in the number of pets seeking loving homes this holiday season, Louisville Metro Animal Services, #YourCityShelter, is delighted to announce the extension of free adoptions through the end of December. The decision comes as the shelter faces an alarming surge of additional animals, highlighting the critical need to find homes for these animals and alleviate the strain on the shelter system.

The 2023 holiday season has presented an unprecedented challenge, with the shelter population continuing to grow. This surge follows an already overwhelming situation at the end of 2022 when shelters were grappling with overcapacity issues. “As new estimates show there are nearly 245,000 additional pets waiting in the shelter system this holiday season compared to last year. Louisville Metro Animal Services recognizes the urgency of addressing this crisis and is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of these animals. “We adopted 112 dogs and 48 cats during Bissell Pet Foundations' Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope Event. In those two weeks, we took in 162 dogs,” says Director Book. “The continuation of our free adoptions is a crucial step in finding loving homes for these animals and ensuring that they have the chance to experience the joy of a family.”

Free adoptions include spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and a microchip. Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the shelter to get matched with a new furry friend.

Louisville Metro Animal Services waiving reclamation fees for owned pets through the end of December 

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is waiving reclamation fees for owned pets through the end of the year. LMAS seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the reunification of beloved companions with their families. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. Redemption fees are set by the Louisville Animal Ordinance. Local animal laws also require pets to be licensed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.  Pet owners may visit the shelter, at 3528 Newburg Road, Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., to reclaim their companion animals. The shelter's dedicated staff members will be available to guide owners through the reclamation process, providing support and assistance every step of the way.

Louisville Parks & Recreation new Park Guide is online

The Louisville Parks & Recreation Park Guide, which you can find online, has maps and information about our 124 public parks, including locations for amenities such as playgrounds, ball fields, pavilions and walking tracks. The interactive map in the middle of the guide also provides locations for community centers. Thanks to the Parks Alliance of Louisville and the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, who helped produce and provided the funding for this colorful, easy-to-use guide.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format.

A message from LNC: As 2023 is winding to a close, we are reflecting on what a magnificent year it has been. 

• With the help of our amazing forest stewards, over 300 native wildflowers and 200 native trees and shrubs were planted in the Preserve. 16 acres were also cleared of bush honeysuckle and privet. 
• Our fantastic education team reached over 31,000 contact hours with children engaged in environmental programming. 
• 18 campers attended Summer Camp on scholarship. 
• We gave away 500 native trees.
• Our team of volunteers devoted an astounding 4,500 hours of service.
• A longtime dream of hosting our First Annual Paw Paw Festival came to fruition with 1,500 attendees!

We are proud of our accomplishments and recognize our success is due to the supporters who believe in our mission just as much as we do. Whether you are a member, donor, volunteer, or frequenter, we thank you dearly. Hike at your leisure, either on the candlelit short trail (about 3/4 mile), or the unlit longer trail (1 3/4 mile). Warm up around the fire afterward, or head indoors, where you can visit our reptiles and enjoy snacks and drinks. Participants must be 21 and over.

Let candles light your way as you stroll underneath the stars this Galentine’s and Valentine’s Day. 

Great Backyard Bird Count, Friday, February 16, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission for members is $5 and for non-members is $15. 

On this guided hike, our experienced naturalist and birdwatcher will help participants to identify some of Louisville’s beautiful birds and log their findings into eBird. Participants will learn ID tips such as field marks, behavior, habitat, vocalizations and more. This is for all skill levels of birding, ages 12 and up. Grab your binoculars and smart phones to join the worlds largest biodiversity-related citizen science project! Don’t have any binoculars? That’s okay! We have some available to use.

Grab your muck boots for this one! The streamside salamander (Ambystoma barbouri) is endemic to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. One of their few remaining strongholds is in the wetlands of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve!

Led by our naturalist, Jacob, participants on this hike will venture into the wetlands of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve to search for salamanders. Discover what makes these important habitats so special, and maybe get a little muddy while you’re at it!

Vernal Pool Exploration

Deep in the forest lie seasonal pools of water that are home to many important species! They are temporary habitats critical to the survival of amphibians and aquatic invertebrates. On this hike, join Jacob as you explore vernal pools looking for salamanders, frogs, and fairy shrimp! Be ready to get muddy as some of the hike is off trail.

Louisville Asset Building Coalition seeks volunteer tax preparers

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition (LABC) seeks volunteers to help low and middle-income Louisvillians file their taxes next year. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, provides trained, IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax services at 11 sites across the city. They will begin their important work during next year’s tax season. 

Since launching in 2001, VITA services offered through the LABC have helped thousands of Louisville residents file their taxes. LABC provides a free service alternative to the high cost of paid tax preparation services, with the goal of ensuring that everyone who qualifies can access an array of available tax credits including child, retirement savings, and education.

VITA volunteers will also help determine if residents are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit for low- and middle-income working individuals and families. In Louisville, over 80,000 families are eligible for roughly $34 million dollars from the Earned Income Tax Credit that goes unclaimed each year. 

VITA volunteers do not have to be tax experts and their training will be provided by the LABC before tax season begins. For more about the Louisville Asset Building Coalition, visit www.labcservices.org. 

Registration open now for the next Neighborhood Institute 

County Clerk offices to pause motor vehicle services in early January during statewide migration to improved system; online vehicle registration unavailable starting Dec. 28

A major step forward in modernizing the state’s vehicle information database is approaching as transportation officials migrate to a new, customer-centric system. All County Clerk offices will temporarily pause in-person and online motor and vessel-related services in early January to accommodate the transition. The suspension of services starts January 1, lasts between four to 10 business days and may cause longer wait times when services resume in January. 

The following services will be unavailable during the migration: vehicle and boat registration renewals, vehicle and boat titling and transfers, disabled parking permit issuance and license plate issuance. The migration will not impact driver license issuance at Driver Licensing Regional Offices. 

Online vehicle registration renewal will be unavailable starting December 28. Online renewal will be restored the week of January 8. Visit drive.ky.gov for updates.

County Clerk Offices - Motor vehicle and vessel-related services will be unavailable as early as Friday, December 29. All offices will pause services starting January 1, and gradually resume services the week of January 8.

Tips for requesting Large Item Pickup online

For best results: Type your address when making a Large Item Pickup appointment. Using the map pin to find your address can be difficult.  Choose from the dropdown if your item is listed. Only use "Other" if necessary. Set out items the day before your appointment in the same location as garbage collection - and make sure the items are visible.  Check your "junk" email if you don't receive an automatic email after scheduling your appointment.

Kentucky's New Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Each year Park DuValle Community Health Center organizes a mass vaccination initiative to protect the Louisville metro from influenza, hosting walk-in flu clinics and providing thousands of flu vaccines at no cost. This fall, PDCHC is adjusting flu clinics operations to increase capacity flow by serving the community at all PDCHC locations, including at Newburg at 3828 Bardstown Road. The full schedule is available online at pdchc.org today. Walk-ins are welcome, but PDCHC urge the community to register in advance on their website's patient portal.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. Appointments and walk-ins are accepted. The city has also set up a trauma hotline that is free to call: 901-0100.

LMPD - which numbers to call for emergencies, non-emergencies, and ongoing criminal activity complaints

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

January 5 - Wellspring Clients Art Show opening night reception; show benefits adults with mental illness

Artists with unique backgrounds are about to enter the local spotlight. More than a dozen clients from Wellspring’s Art Therapy programs will be featured in Mellwood Art Center’s  Pigment Gallery throughout the month of January. The artists come from a variety of 
backgrounds, and most have experienced some form of trauma, and all are diagnosed with a
mental illness.

Wellspring is a Louisville nonprofit that provides behavioral health services, affordable housing,
and crisis stabilization services for adults with mental illness. Wellspring’s Licensed Professional Art Therapist, Kathleen Garcia, works with hundreds of clients each year. She says showcasing clients’ art in a professional gallery illuminates the power of expression, especially for some people who may not otherwise be able to describe their emotions.
“Having an art show empowers our clients as artists. It displays their hard work in therapy along with their talent. It emphasizes the importance of their artwork,” Garcia says. “Art is another language that everyone knows. Even if they can’t say it, they can create it. It’s a powerful way to communicate when you don’t know what words to use.”

Garcia says the public display also emphasizes the important role that Art Therapy plays in a
person’s mental health recovery.

“While displaying the art is empowering, I place the highest importance on the process, not the
finished product. The art-making process usually evokes emotions that are difficult to find and
express through words alone. Art is healing. Creating art can be fun and exciting and draw out
joy and happiness, but it can also prompt a large range of painful emotions to work through
grief and trauma as a part of the healing journey.”

The client Art Show is made possible with grant funds from The Snowy Owl Foundation.
Mellwood’s Pigment Gallery (1860 Mellwood Ave.) will display the Wellspring client art January
5-28. An Opening Night Reception takes place Friday, January 5 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Items are for sale and clients receive 70 percent of the sale price.

Wellspring is a Louisville non-profit with 42 years of experience serving adults with mental illness. Wellspring operates the region’s only adult Crisis Stabilization Services that provide 24/7 acute-care in a home-like setting. In addition, Wellspring provides Assertive Community Treatment, case management, peer support, Supportive Housing, and Affordable Housing Programs with subsidized rental housing. Wellspring also has a Supported Employment Program.

January 5 - Next Anti-Racism Challenge begins

As we look forward to the New Year, many of us are thinking of positive change and new habits we want to develop. The free, four-week Anti-Racism Challenge can help us begin the new year with hope and action for a better world. It’s sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro’s Lean Into Louisville, and the Earth and Spirit Center and begins on January 5.

This is how it works -- once a week in January, participants will receive an email with a list of 10-12 anti-racism activities. These range from reading an article, contacting an elected official, watching a film or viewing an exhibit by Black artists, patronizing a Black business, etc. We ask participants to choose and complete three of the listed activities. The purpose is to keep us all focused and active in challenging racism. This is a personal Challenge -- no one needs to report back. January 15 - MLK Day Tree Planting in Victory Park next event with Louisville Urban Forestry

Tree planting season continues, and Louisville Urban Forestry has several opportunities for the community to get involved with efforts to plant new trees and maintain ones already planted. No experience is needed for Urban Forestry events, and all tools are provided. The big highlight of this year’s tree planting season is that Louisville Urban Forestry will host five large-scale community plantings. These plantings bring businesses, organizations and individuals together as volunteers to plant hundreds of trees at once in a particular area. This includes one community wide planting day in partnership with TreesLouisville, two neighborhood tree plantings, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Planting and TreeFest. Throughout Tree Planting season, Louisville Urban Forestry will also be hosting Community Forester Trainings, which offer in-depth information on the best practices for planting trees. This also gives the public an opportunity to become a Community Forester and lead tree plantings. Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
