On behalf of Council District 13, we would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at the Fairdale Playtorium.
This past week, the Men of Quality from Fairdale High School visited the Fairdale Playtorium. The Men of Quality program is sponsored by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Their goal is to help young men set realistic goals, realize that the future belongs to those that are prepared, and become role models that share their time, resources, and efforts in giving back to our community and country. These young men helped our seniors by assembling carts and exercise equipment for them. Thank you, Men of Quality, for your act of selflessness and kindness!
A big thank you to Lisa Moore & JenCare Senior Medical for providing monthly crafting activities and spreading smiles and laughter throughout the Playtorium with our Senior Community! This week, they painted ornaments for the holidays.
We are also thankful for Bill and Sherry Gaines for starting the Fairdale Prime Timers Group. The Prime Timers meet monthly for fun, fellowship, and a great meal. From cornhole tournaments to chili cook-offs there is something for everyone.
We are appreciative of all of our partners. If you know a senior who might be interested in taking part in these monthly activities, please contact my office.

Adventure through the Louisville Zoo as it launches a new winter holiday event — “Qannik’s Beary Happy Holiday.” Areas of the Zoo will be transformed into a winter wonderland throughout the month of December, providing a unique opportunity to experience the holidays alongside the community’s beloved animal residents.
Families are invited to create memories and celebrate with polar bear Qannik and her animal companions as they enjoy special holiday-themed enrichment activities during the first three weekends of December (2 – 3, 9 – 10, and 16 – 17). Guests can stop by the Zoo’s Gift Shop, December 1 – 17, to write and send a letter to Santa at the North Pole.
The power couple of the season — Santa and Mrs. Claus — will visit with guests when they celebrate the season at the Zoo on December 16 – 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Additionally, holiday elves will have special sweet treats available for purchase this weekend, including fresh roasted s’mores, hot chocolate and cookie decorating.
To add an extra layer of festive fun, guests can embark on a monthlong scavenger hunt that promises adventure for all ages. Participants who successfully complete at least half of the scavenger hunt will be entered into a drawing for zoo-themed prizes. Guests can join the app-based game by scanning the QR code upon arrival to the Zoo.
For a detailed schedule of animal enrichment activities planned for our beloved animals and more, visit louisvillezoo.org/bearyhappy. Activities are subject to change without notice due to weather or the needs of the animals.

Solid Waste Department and the Waste Management District are committed to waste reduction, reuse, and recycling, while WaterStep's projects keep hundreds of tons of waste out of our landfills AND help save hundreds of thousands of lives each year. The new partnership just makes sense!
Since August 2023 Solid Waste has collected over 600 lbs of shoes, which means over 200 people now have safe drinking water for life.
Drop-off boxes can be found at the Solid Waste office and the three staffed recycling locations:
- Solid Waste Office, 600 Meriwether Ave
- Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway
- Central Government Center, 7201 Outer Loop
- East District Public Works, 595 N. Hubbards Lane
Shoes were also collected during our last four Pop-Up Drop-Off events this year. Stay tuned for the 2024 schedule.
