Louisville Parks and Recreation Offers Fall Break Fun October 2-6

Registration is now open for Louisville Parks and Recreation’s 2023 Fall Break Camps for children ages 6-12. These camps will be held at all 11 community centers from October 2-6, aligning with Jefferson County Public Schools’ fall break.

There is a one-time camp fee of $60 due at the time of registration. The field trip is included in the fee. Parents and guardians are asked to drop off their campers at 8:00am and pick them up by 6:00pm each day. Dare to Care will be serving hot meals at lunchtime during those hours.

Parents and guardians can sign their children up for both fall break camps by visiting bestparksever.com and clicking the ‘Fall Break Camps’ button on the homepage. The Louisville Free Public Library’s annual Family S.T.E.A.M. Day returns to the South Central Regional Library, 7300 Jefferson Boulevard, on Saturday, September 30, 11:00am – 3:00pm. This FREE family-friendly event offers amazing presentations and hands-on activities to get kids excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math.

This year’s S.T.E.A.M. Day includes Southland Dairy’s mobile classroom (with a real cow), Kentucky Science Center exploring the human body, a look at local wildlife with Louisville Nature Center, virtual reality and robotics with Central Creativity, and sun-gazing with the Louisville Astronomical Society’s solar telescopes. Irving Materials will be back to show kids how to make concrete and KMAC will lead art-making. Plus, take a selfie with our special guests from the Princesses of Louisville – Ariel and Eric from the Little Mermaid.

Tickets on Sale for Louisville’s Favorite Halloween Event

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, presented by Thorntons, is celebrating its 11^th year from October 3-31 at Iroquois Park. This year’s theme is “Wanderlust: The World is Your Pumpkin,” and will feature skits and scenes from travel destinations from across the country and around the world. Guests can weave their way through the woods and visit national parks, ancient wonders of the world, and other “bucket list” destinations. Attendees should be prepared to enjoy re-creations of Route 66, the Grand Canyon, ancient pyramids, and Merry Olde England.

The event runs from Tuesday, October 3 through Tuesday, October 31
The event will be open from Dusk-1000pm, Sunday through Thursday, and until 11:00pm on Friday and Saturday
The event is held rain or shine unless dangerous weather conditions arise.
To reduce crowds and traffic, there will be timed ticketing for every night of the show.
Sunday-Thursday pricing: Adults - $15, Seniors (65+) - $13, Children (3-12) - $12
Friday-Saturday pricing: Adults - $20, Seniors (65+) - $17, Children (3-12) - $15

Future Dreamers Civic Leadership Academy 2023

The Future Dreamers Civic Leadership Academy develops and highlights emerging community leaders who live, work, or learn in South or Southwest Louisville. Participants engage in a series of workshops where they learn about the assets and opportunities specific to South and Southwest Louisville and build on skills and resources necessary to address these priorities. The Academy has graduated 40 diverse Louisvillians from 13 zip codes.

Fall 2023 Class – Accepting Cohort Members

The Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (District) proposes to renew a FEDOOP operating permit for Buckeye Terminals, LLC – Louisville South (distributor of petroleum products from bulk liquid storage facilities), 7800 Cane Run Road, Louisville, 40258, in accordance with Regulation 2.17. This action renews the permit for a five-year term. The 30-day public comment period starts on September 20, 2023, and ends on October 20, 2023. A public hearing may be scheduled if the District determines that there are germane, unresolved issues or substantial public interest, in accordance with Regulation 2.07.

Drafts of the permit and summary are available on the District website, by emailing our permitting section, calling Matt King at (502) 574-6000, or at the District office 701 West Ormsby Avenue, Suite 303, Louisville, KY 40203, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Copies of the application are available upon request. Written comments will be accepted through the District’s online public comment form until midnight or at the District office until 5:00 p.m. on October 20, 2023.

What is the purpose of this permit? This action renews the permit for a five-year term.
Will this permit increase pollution? Renewal of this operating permit will not increase pollution.
Does this facility have a history of non-compliance? There are no records of any violations since the issuance of the last operating permit.
Where can I find out more? Additional information, including equipment descriptions, potential emissions, and applicable rules, are summarized in the Statement of Basis. The Draft Permit details the application of these rules to the equipment and includes the monitoring, recordkeeping, and reporting that the District believes is necessary to demonstrate compliance.

Free, city-wide Anti-Racism Challenge (ARC), sponsored by listenlearnact.org, Metro Lean Into Louisville, and the Earth and Spirit Center begins October 6.

Each week during October, participants will receive an email with a list of 10-12 anti-racism activities. These range from reading an article, calling an elected official, making a donation, watching a film or viewing an exhibit by Black artists, patronizing a Black business, etc. We ask participants to choose and complete 3 of the listed activities. The purpose is to keep us all focused and active in challenging racism in our daily lives. This is a personal Challenge -- no one needs to report back to us. If participants are interested, they simply provide their email address (we never share anyone's information) and that puts them on the list to receive our ARC email each week. Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued a competitive NOFO titled Pathways to Removing Obstacles to Housing (PRO Housing) for the purpose of providing grant funding for the identification and removal of barriers to affordable housing production and preservation. Eligible applicants are local and state governments, metropolitan planning organizations, and multijurisdictional entities. Grantees may receive up to $10 Million to further develop, evaluate, and implement housing policy plans, improve housing strategies, and facilitate affordable housing production and preservation. The Louisville-Jefferson County Metro Government Office of Housing and Community Development is leading the effort and is working in conjunction with the Office of Planning to apply for the funding.

As part of this application process, the Office of Housing and Community Development is seeking feedback from stakeholders on the barriers they see in their communities in the production of affordable housing. This survey will be open to take responses for 10 days. This is a great opportunity to help shape the goals of the application. Further, a public hearing will occur in October to solicit feedback on the draft application. Thank you for your participation!

Efforts Underway to Support Law Enforcement Month in Louisville

In May the Louisville Metro Council Unanimously supported the passage of a resolution marking September as Law Enforcement Appreciation Month.

Councilmembers are partnering with local schools as well as a senior club to organize a number of events to support police serving in southwest Louisville Metro. These groups are sending letters and even preparing a meal for officers to show their support and appreciation. There are many ways to show support in September:

Consider dropping off snacks, drinks, or gift cards to your closest patrol division. (List of divisions)
Pay it forward. Pay for the meal of an officer at a restaurant or drive thru.
Write thank you letters and letters of appreciation for officers.
Give verbal praise and support when seeing someone in uniform
Donating to the Metro Police Foundation to fund programs like “Officer in Distress”, “Shop with a Cop” or other services meant to support injured or fallen officers and their families. (website: saferlouisville.org/donate)

School Traffic Guards Needed

The Louisville Metro Police Department and the traffic guards it employs take their responsibility for the safety of students and pedestrians at their assigned intersections throughout Louisville Metro seriously. Currently, they are below their authorized strength and do not have enough traffic guards to cover all the intersections with a need for traffic control. Furthermore, traffic guards are assigned intersections based upon a contractual bidding process. LMPD communicates with the affected schools and is continuously attempting to hire more traffic guards.
