Temperatures are expected to climb to the mid-‘90s today and Saturday. Residents are encouraged to take steps to reduce their risk of heat-related illness. Risks associated with a hot weather include:

• Heat cramps - This includes muscular pains and spasms resulting from heavy exertion. These symptoms are often the first signal that the body is suffering from excessive heat.
• Heat exhaustion - This includes fainting, rash, fatigue, and nausea. Skin may become clammy and moist.
• Heat/sun stroke symptoms - These include hot, dry skin, the absence of sweat, nausea, confusion, and unconsciousness. This is a life-threatening condition. Seek medical care immediately.

To prevent risks from excessive heat, individuals should do the following: 

• Seek air-conditioning: If your home does not have air-conditioning, seek areas that do, including libraries, shopping malls, community/senior centers, grocery stores, and movie theaters during the warmest period of the day. If you must stay in a home without air-conditioning, stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine.
• Avoid strenuous activities: This is particularly true during the hottest time of the day. Individuals who perform strenuous work during the heat of the day are especially at risk. Take more breaks, do less intense activities. Be watchful for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing: Light colors reflect the sun’s rays better than dark colors, which absorb the heat. Protect the face and head with a wide-brimmed hat.
• Check on family members, neighbors and friends who are vulnerable. Move them to air-conditioned places if possible.
• Drink plenty of fluids: Increase fluid intake even if you are not thirsty.
• Never leave pets or people, especially children and infants, unattended in cars.

Air Quality Alert Day

Today is also an Air Quality Alert Day for ozone in Louisville/Southern Indiana. Forecasters believe ozone will be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (orange) range. Sensitive groups include seniors, children, and people with breathing ailments like asthma and COPD. Check the air quality at louisvilleky.gov/airquality

FOOD POISONING

When dining out, choose an eatery that keeps food safety as its main dish. Feast your eyes on these tips to protect yourself from food poisoning while eating out.

• Check inspection scores. Check a restaurant’s score at our health department’s website, or look for it when you get to the restaurant.
• Look for certificates that show kitchen managers have completed food safety training. Proper food safety training can help improve practices that reduce the chance of spreading foodborne germs and illnesses.
• Look for safe food-handling practices. Sick food workers can spread their illness to customers. If you can see food being prepared, check to make sure workers are using gloves or utensils to handle foods that will not be cooked further, such as deli meats and salad greens.
• Order food that’s properly cooked. Certain foods need to be cooked to a safe internal temperature. This includes meat; seafood; chicken, turkey, or other poultry; and eggs. If a restaurant serves you undercooked meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs, send it back to be cooked until it is safe to eat.
• Avoid lukewarm food. Cold food should be served cold, and hot food should be served hot. If you’re selecting food from a buffet or salad bar, make sure the hot food is steaming and the cold food is chilled. Germs that cause food poisoning grow quickly when food is in the danger zone, between 40°F and 140°F.
• Refrigerate your leftovers quickly. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of when the food was prepared (or an hour if the food is exposed to temperatures above 90°F, like a hot car or picnic). Eat leftovers within three to four days. Throw them out after that time.

NATIONAL BREAST FEEDING MONTH

It's National Breastfeeding Month. Breastfeeding is a great way to ensure better health for baby and mother, and has positive effects that last throughout life for both. Studies have shown that babies who breastfeed are less likely to develop allergies, have fewer ear infections, and have better dental health. Breastfed babies are also less likely to grow up over-weight or develop diabetes later in life.

Our WIC Program has many resources to help people breastfeed such as free breast pumps, a support group and peer counseling. WIC also offers nutrition education and food packages to help the whole family eat better. The recent, record-breaking heat waves that have scorched the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, China and southern Europe were made dramatically more likely due to human-caused climate change, researchers report in a study from the World Weather Attribution network. In a world without climate change, they found, the recent extreme heat in China would be expected roughly once every 250 years. Now, it’s a once-in-five-years phenomenon, or 50 times more likely to occur. Meanwhile the extreme heat waves in southern Europe and North America, which would have been virtually impossible without climate change, are now likely to occur once every 10 years and 15 years, respectively. Power up and Play with Norton Children’s Wellness

Power Up and Play is designed to teach parents and their school-age children how to prepare healthy snacks and stay active together. Adults and kids will practice making a healthy food item and participate in an exercise activity all physical fitness levels are welcome. Children must be age 5 or older, and one parent or guardian must be present and participate with every two children.

Louisville Metro Emergency Services reminds families to stay safe with Smart911

As schools resume, officials urge families to create a Safety Profile for their household to provide vital information to 911 in case of emergency

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (August 8, 2023) – With the start of a new academic year, safety is top of mind for both parents and school officials. Louisville Metro Emergency Services is reminding families that there is a free service available to them to help plan ahead for an emergency. 

Smart911, a nationwide public safety service, allows families to create a Safety Profile for their household by downloading the Smart911 App or visiting www.smart911.com and providing details such as photos of children, home address, medical notes and emergency contacts. If any member of the family dials 911 from any phone number registered to their profile, that information will be available to dispatchers to send response teams to the correct location with current information on the individual in need. These details can greatly affect the outcome of any emergency, including:

A Missing Child

In the event that a child is missing, having a current photo and physical description in the family’s Safety Profile can save valuable time, as that information can be sent to officers in the field immediately to begin a search.

Emergency Call from a Child

A child may know how to dial 911, but they may not always be able to relay the information needed to get help fast. Details such as an address or medical notes on a parent or other family member in need can be included in the Safety Profile so that the dispatcher does not have to rely on the child for information.

An Incident Walking to or from School

If a child carries a cell phone and needs help while walking to or from school for a medical issue or an accident, the Safety Profile will provide contact information for parents or other emergency contacts who need to be notified.

An Incident at Home

In the event of a house fire, accident or other emergency at home, responders can be aware of who lives in the house, including pets, and be sure everyone is safe and accounted for when they arrive on scene.

Schools can also be better prepared for an emergency with the addition of Rave Facility. By creating a profile for their facility, school administrators can make responders aware of on-site contacts, building layouts, access points and even the locations of athletic fields and parking lots. Anytime any phone calls 911 from within the boundaries of the school facility, that information will also be available to facilitate a fast response. Schools and other commercial buildings and facilities can create a profile at www.ravefacility.com.

“With the return of school, safety is our top priority for all of our children, families and staff,” said Jody Meiman, Executive Director, Louisville Metro Emergency Services. “We encourage all families in our community to take advantage of Smart911 in order to help us better help them in an emergency. The addition of the facility profile will only enhance our response time and efforts to ensure our entire community will stay safe.” 

Smart911 is currently available in 40 states and more than 1,500 municipalities across the country, and it has been credited with positively affecting emergency outcomes, including a missing child in which the girl’s photo and physical description were immediately available to 911 and responders, as well as a heart attack victim where an address and medical notes allowed responders to be dispatched to his location quickly.

CRISIS CALL DIVERSION PROGRAM

Crisis Call Diversion Program to expand service hours

Alternative response model to operate 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 30, 2023) – Beginning July 1, 2023, Louisville Metro Government’s Crisis Call Diversion Program (CCDP), also known as “Deflection,” to send certain 911 calls to a non-police response will expand its service hours to 10 a.m.-10 p.m. The program currently operates from 2-10 p.m., seven days a week. This latest expansion was made possible by hiring additional staff to adequately provide coverage for the expanded hours.

“Nationally, we’re seeing many 911 centers adding a Deflection response to their option of services provided,” said Jody Meiman, executive director of Louisville Metro Emergency Services. “We’re proud that our program was developed here by our MetroSafe personnel, it has been recognized across the country by our peers and is now expanding further, benefitting more people and getting them the true help they need.”

The pilot program was initially launched in March 2022 with a focus on LMPD’s Fourth Division. Following its success, the program was expanded to include all LMPD divisions.

Since its launch, the CCDP has resulted in more than 1,400 Crisis Triage Worker (CTW) encounters, with the average encounter lasting about 15 minutes, though some can last up to an hour. The CTWs have made more than 500 mobile runs to help more than 330 unique individuals, with the average mobile encounter lasting a little less than an hour. These Deflection efforts continue to relieve Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers of hundreds of hours of time that might have been spent on the calls, further allowing officers to focus on violent crime.

As of July 1st, Seven Counties Services will have 20 staff members dedicated to Deflection response, including six CTWs at MetroSafe and 13 Mobile Crisis Response Teams responding in the field. Seven Counties Services will continue to hire more people to meet the goal of having the CCDP operate 24/7.

“Our Deflection team is thrilled to be able to increase the coverage of this innovative program that provides another entry point for persons experiencing a behavioral health crisis to connect with individualized, trauma-informed, compassionate community-based treatment,” said Nicole Wiseman, unit manager for the Deflection team. “Individuals experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis deserve a respectful and intentional response that meets them where they are and connects them with ongoing resources that build their resilience in their recovery.”

Here’s how the program works:

• When a person calls 911, MetroSafe call takers initially triage the call by asking questions such as “are you experiencing a mental health crisis” and questions regarding safety, such as weapons in their possession or if they’ve taken active steps to harm themselves or others, requiring Emergency Medical Services (EMS) intervention.
• If deemed appropriate, the call is transferred to a CTW in a Behavioral Health Hub within MetroSafe. LMPD officers are also able to refer runs back to CCDP that they deem safe to respond.
• The CTW team functions like crisis hotline staff to de-escalate, provide emotional support, create a safety plan and problem solve with the person in crisis.
• If it’s determined that a face-to-face response would be beneficial, CTWs initiate a mobile response.
• Mobile responders, trained in mental health crisis intervention, meet the person where they are to further de-escalate and assess the situation and, if appropriate, connect the individual to service. Responders have the option of transporting the person to the community respite center at Seven Counties Services, to a treatment facility or to any other community resource including shelter.

• If you dial 911 by mistake, please stay on the line and explain to the call taker. We are required to call back any 911 hang up calls the Communication Center receives. If the hang up is from a land line or business phone, we will send police to do a welfare check if no one answers on the callback.
• We are able to connect to an interpreter service if caller needs to communication in another language.
• Please remember to have patience when calling for an emergency at a public place or roadway or during a severe weather event . The call volume will increase and call takers will be processing calls as fast and efficiently as they can.

Louisville Ghost Walk - Tours depart every Friday night at 6:45 p.m. beginning the second weekend in May and continuing until the first weekend in November.  

Louisville Food and History Walking Tour of Nulu - Every Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m.

Whiskey Row Walking Tour - Tours begin in March and are available Thursday through Saturday at 11 a.m. sharp and on Sundays at 1 p.m.

Community Action Kentucky (CAP) - (Office Locations) Services include various educational courses and Job Readiness Financial Literacy courses.

KentuckianaWorks Services include high-demand job training, one-on-one career counseling, career development workshops, career search resources, access to computers, phones and faxes for job searches.

Kentucky Career Center The Kentucky Career Center offers information on unemployment benefits & claims as well as many services for job seekers.

Louisville Urban League Assists clients, primarily African Americans and individuals of low to moderate income, prepare for and find employment.  Services include counseling & placement services, training & development, pre-screening & referral services and outreach programs.

Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs    This site includes information about education and training benefits available to veterans through the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Express   Kentucky Career Center offices have Local Veterans Employment representatives and Disabled Veteran outreach specialists to assist veterans with their employment and training needs.

Center for Accessible Living (CAL)   CAL offers training on disability issues and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA compliance, building and product accessibility, reasonable accommodation certification, American Sign Language interpreters, recruitment, career development, a Job Hunt Club and much more. Goodwill Industries of Kentucky   Goodwill provides jobs, job training, and employment counseling for people who face barriers to finding and keeping a job, including people with disabilities, recipients of public assistance, and people with limited education or work history.

Job Corps Job Corps is a free education and training program that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or GED, and find and keep a good job. For eligible youth at least 16 years of age.  For more information, call (800) 733-JOBS where an operator will refer you to the admissions counselor closest to where you live, and mail you an information packet.

Kentucky Office for the Blind   Services include: braille instruction, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, adult education, career development, life skills, personal development

Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation   Programs and services offered include counseling & guidance, vocational & other training services, interpreter & note taking services, rehabilitation technology, job placement and supported employment.
