It's time for the Annual Dainty Contest and Festival! 

The 53rd Annual World Championship Dainty Contest and Festival, begins Saturday, July 29 and runs through Monday, July 31.

The Dainty Contest is a cherished tradition that brings the community together for a lively and spirited competition. The event is deeply rooted in the community’s history and showcases the dexterity, precision, and fellowship of participants in a celebration of skill and tradition.

The game requires participants to use a 5" stick, referred to as “the dainty” and a 3’ stick, referred to as “the bat”. The goal is to use the bat to hit the dainty off the ground into the air, and then strike it again as far as it will go. The competition demands a combination of hand-eye coordination, strategy, and good old-fashioned luck.

There are several rules for participants: players must be 45 or older, three strikes and you’re out (strike is any contact of the bat with the dainty), players must only use one arm, whomever hits the dainty the furthest is declared the winner, and whomever hits the dainty the shortest distance receives a traditional basket of lemons.

The festival will kick off on Saturday, July 29, at 5 p.m., with the 3rd Annual Dainty FUNraiser at The Merryweather, 1101 Lydia Street. The FUNraiser will feature live music, drink specials, raffles, cake wheel, and more.

The events continue Sunday, July 30, with a full day of family fun beginning at noon at Hauck’s Corner, 1000 Goss Avenue. The day includes the Dainty Parade, a dunk tank, the Bologna Sandwich Eating Contest (the traditional dainty meal), bingo, and more.

The celebration culminates Monday with the 53rd Annual World Championship Dainty Contest on George Hauck Way. The event will feature food trucks, bologna sandwiches, a beer garden, merchandise booths, and world class fun. Player signups begin at 4:30 p.m. onsite, with dignitary play at 5:15 p.m. and open play beginning at 5:30 p.m.

It was 1971 when George Hauck, Charlie Vettiner, and a few friends from Louisville's Germantown-Schnitzelburg neighborhood first gathered on the corner of Goss and Hoertz Avenue to play an old, German street game and to begin a neighborhood tradition that would span generations. They called it the Dainty.

Fogging operations to be conducted in Iroquois area after mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) has found mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus in surveillance traps in the Iroquois area. To help prevent infection and reduce the mosquito population, mosquito fogging will take place this week in the 40214 ZIP code.  So far this year, no confirmed human cases of West Nile have been reported in Jefferson County. In most instances, people infected with West Nile virus either show no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms.  However, less than one percent of infected people develop a serious neurologic illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. Serious illness can occur in people of any age. However, people over 60 years of age are at the greatest risk for severe disease. People with certain medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease and people who have received organ transplants are at greater risk for serious illness.

Avoid mosquito bites

• Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 and some oil of lemon eucalyptus and para-menthane-diol products provide longer-lasting protection. To optimize safety and effectiveness, repellents should be used according to the label instructions. 
• When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with a repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give you extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to your skin. Do not spray repellents on the skin under your clothing.
• Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours of early morning and dusk. Be sure to use repellent and wear protective clothing from dusk to dawn or consider avoiding outdoor activities during these times.

Prevent mosquito breeding grounds

• Install or repair screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitos outside. 
• Help reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home by emptying standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires and draining birdbaths on a regular basis.

Enrollment for LIHEAP Summer Subsidy now open

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services joins with Community Action Agencies across the state to begin accepting applications for the 2023 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy Cooling Component and the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). These federally-funded programs are designed to help offset the cost of higher utility bills. Applications will be accepted through September 22 or until funds are depleted. Applicants for the LIHEAP Summer Subsidy and LIHWAP program must be residents of Jefferson County with a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $3,750). The LIHEAP Summer Subsidy component provides households a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills. The benefit amount is paid directly to the electric vendor (i.e. LG&E). The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP program, also provides a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $100 depending on income levels. Jefferson County residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system by calling 991-8391 or online. Learn more about LIHEAP income eligibility and other instructions.

Hikes Lane Rehabilitation project continues

The map above shows the Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project detour for Phase 5. 

The Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project continues. The federally funded project mostly includes repairing/replacing concrete pavement, improving curb ramps and sidewalks to make them ADA compliant. Construction costs are estimated to be $7,000,000. Work on the 2.7-mile corridor is anticipated to be completed by late October. 

The project now enters Phase 5. The construction zone will shift west between Rose Boulevard and Goldsmith Lane. This will include a detour of Klondike Lane, as seen above.

Sidewalk over Goldsmith Lane bridge near Peabody Lane closed due to safety concerns

The sidewalk over the bridge structure on Goldsmith Lane near Peabody is closed until further notice. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspection revealed safety concerns and closing the sidewalk will allow the driving lanes to remain open at this time.  The next steps will be to investigate and design a repair or replacement of the structure. Please watch for signage and use extra caution in the area.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Louisville Zoo visitors can enjoy brand new larger-than-life sculptures in Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects® exhibit made with LEGO bricks through September 17.

The exhibit includes 15 sculptures including an 83-inch-tall moth orchid, a 77-inch-tall goldfinch, a 60-inch-tall snail on a mushroom and a 76-inch-tall hummingbird. The art is made from more than 203,000 LEGO bricks. Nature Connects is free with Louisville Zoo admission or membership.

LMAS, Friends of Metro Animal Services offering three months of waived reclaim fees for lost pets through September 15

Now through September 15, owners can reclaim their lost pets without incurring the usual reclamation fees, including boarding charges, vaccinations, and microchipping. The aim is to alleviate the burden on individuals and families who may be facing financial hardship, ensuring that no pet remains separated from its rightful home due to economic disparities. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. LMAS will not keep a pet impounded due to its owner’s inability to pay and will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet. LMAS thanks their non-profit partners, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) for providing the necessary funding to make the three-month redemption period possible.

Jefferson County Public Schools Summer Meals program for all youth 

Summer meals are good for students' bodies, and healthier students are great for everybody. Kids get nutritious meals at no charge at any of the JCPS Summer Meal sites. Due to changes on the federal level parents can no longer pick up meals on behalf of their child. Children must attend the sites in person and meals must be eaten on site. Children must be 18 years of age or younger to participate. (Adults are not served.)  Nutrition services will continue to provide meals throughout the summer at no cost via school locations, mobile routes, and at pools, parks and enrichment sites. School site locations will be offering hot meals while community and mobile site will be offering ready to eat meals prepared at our Nutrition Service Center.

Now through August 31, teens 14-19 can use any of the 21 Louisville & Southern Indiana Planet Fitness locations for free through the High School Summer Pass program. Teens can enroll electronically (with parent or guardian e-signature). In 2022, more than four million teens across 2,400 PF locations nationwide took advantage of High School Summer Pass.

Curbing Gun Violence Competition 

You're invited to enter the Curbing Gun Violence Competition, sponsored by the Crescent Hill Community Council.  A $1,000 prize will be awarded to the person submitting the best new idea, or a new twist on an old idea to curb gun violence in Jefferson County. Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division offering free  ‘Mulch Mondays’ 

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division's ‘Mulch Mondays':  Any Jefferson County resident or nonprofit organization will be able to pick up natural, dye-free mulch at no cost between 1 and 3 p.m. every Monday in the parking lot directly behind 9200 Whipps Mill Road. Those interested in picking up free mulch are required to bring their own container for transport. Participants will be required to fill out a waiver before receiving mulch.

Closure of Bridge #2 in Cherokee Park extended

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has extended the closure of Bridge #2 over the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in Cherokee Park. Deterioration discovered under the deck surface during repair work revealed the need to fully replace the bridge. 

Work will resume once a redesign is finalized and permitting is approved. The anticipated completion date of this project is set for late 2023. KYTC is coordinating the bridge project with Louisville Parks and Recreation and Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

Help with prescription medication copays

If you are struggling to pay for your prescriptions, the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program may be able to help. Call the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program (KPAP) Hotline at 1-800-633-8100, available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred on or after January 20, 2020. Eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply are available online FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance and through FEMA's dedicated helpline at 1-844-684-6333.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page.  Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County.  Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans. "Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.
