Curbing Gun Violence Competition 

You're invited to enter the Curbing Gun Violence Competition, sponsored by the Crescent Hill Community Council.  A $1,000 prize will be awarded to the person submitting the best new idea, or a new twist on an old idea to curb gun violence in Jefferson County. Entries will be accepted until midnight on October 24. The entries will be analyzed by a panel of 11 impartial judges, and the winner will be announced on January 4. See the rules and entry form.

Hikes Lane Rehabilitation project continues

The map above shows the Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project detour in yellow.

The Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project continues. The federally funded project mostly includes repairing/replacing concrete pavement, improving curb ramps and sidewalks to make them ADA compliant. Construction costs are estimated to be $7,000,000. Work on the 2.7-mile corridor is anticipated to be completed by late October. 

Please pay close attention to the work plan and detour map to best navigate the area.

July 17 - public hearing regarding Short Term Rentals

Metro Council has directed Planning & Design Services (PDS) and the Planning Commission to carry out a review of the local ordinances concerning short term rentals (STRs) and recommend improvements. The STR regulations were first adopted in 2016 and last updated in 2019. The recommended improvements address community feedback received since the 2019 update and issues encountered by staff in administering the regulations.

The public hearing regarding Short Term Rentals is set for Monday, July 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Sidewalk over Goldsmith Lane bridge near Peabody Lane closed due to safety concerns

The sidewalk over the bridge structure on Goldsmith Lane near Peabody is closed until further notice. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspection revealed safety concerns and closing the sidewalk will allow the driving lanes to remain open at this time.  The next steps will be to investigate and design a repair or replacement of the structure. Please watch for signage and use extra caution in the area.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Through September 17 - Connect with Nature Brick by Brick at the Zoo

Louisville Zoo visitors can enjoy brand new larger-than-life sculptures in Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects® exhibit made with LEGO bricks through September 17.

The exhibit includes 15 sculptures including an 83-inch-tall moth orchid, a 77-inch-tall goldfinch, a 60-inch-tall snail on a mushroom and a 76-inch-tall hummingbird. The art is made from more than 203,000 LEGO bricks. Nature Connects is free with Louisville Zoo admission or membership.

LMAS, Friends of Metro Animal Services offering three months of waived reclaim fees for lost pets through September 15

Now through September 15, owners can reclaim their lost pets without incurring the usual reclamation fees, including boarding charges, vaccinations, and microchipping. The aim is to alleviate the burden on individuals and families who may be facing financial hardship, ensuring that no pet remains separated from its rightful home due to economic disparities. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. LMAS will not keep a pet impounded due to its owner’s inability to pay and will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet. LMAS thanks their non-profit partners, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) for providing the necessary funding to make the three-month redemption period possible.

Through August 31 - Teens can use Planet Fitness locations for free

Now through August 31, teens 14-19 can use any of the 21 Louisville & Southern Indiana Planet Fitness locations for free through the High School Summer Pass program. Teens can enroll electronically (with parent or guardian e-signature). Most Planet Fitness locations are open and staffed 24/7 to meet today’s changing schedules and serve members with its Judgement Free Zone philosophy. Planet Fitness is committed to providing hassle-free, non-intimidating fitness that’s attainable for everyone regardless of their fitness level. In 2022, more than four million teens across 2,400 PF locations nationwide took advantage of High School Summer Pass.

Closure of Bridge #2 in Cherokee Park extended

Project scope updated to now include full replacement of bridge

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has extended the closure of Bridge #2 over the Middle Fork of Beargrass Creek in Cherokee Park. 

Original plans included repairs to the bridge deck and rails, and improvements to the balustrades and toe walls. Contract crews performing the work identified additional  deterioration underneath the deck surface that was visually obstructed before work began, prompting the need to fully replace the bridge. Work will resume once a redesign is finalized and permitting is approved. The anticipated completion date of this project is set for late 2023.

KYTC is coordinating the bridge project with Louisville Parks and Recreation and Olmsted Parks Conservancy.

Jefferson County Public Schools Summer Meals program for all youth 

Summer meals are good for students' bodies, and healthier students are great for everybody. Kids get nutritious meals at no charge at any of the JCPS Summer Meal sites. Due to changes on the federal level parents can no longer pick up meals on behalf of their child. Children must attend the sites in person and meals must be eaten on site. Children must be 18 years of age or younger to participate. (Adults are not served.) 

Nutrition services will continue to provide meals throughout the summer at no cost via school locations, mobile routes, and at pools, parks and enrichment sites. Visit Nutrislice to find locations by site name or zip code and to see menus. School site locations will be offering hot meals while community and mobile site will be offering ready to eat meals prepared at our Nutrition Service Center.

LFPL Summer Reading program and Cultural Pass for youth

The Louisville Free Public Library’s annual 10-week Summer Reading Program, presented by the Library Foundation, encourages children and teens to read for fun over the summer and helps them avoid summer learning loss.

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division's ‘Mulch Mondays':  Any Jefferson County resident or nonprofit organization will be able to pick up natural, dye-free mulch at no cost between 1 and 3 p.m. every Monday in the parking lot directly behind 9200 Whipps Mill Road. Those interested in picking up free mulch are required to bring their own container for transport. Participants will be required to fill out a waiver before receiving mulch.

Help with prescription medication copays

If you are struggling to pay for your prescriptions, the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program may be able to help. Call the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program (KPAP) Hotline at 1-800-633-8100, available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

FEMA is providing financial assistance for COVID-19 related funeral expenses incurred on or after January 20, 2020. Eligibility requirements and instructions on how to apply are available online FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance and through FEMA's dedicated helpline at 1-844-684-6333.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Free Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park continues through August 6

Join us back in Central Park for our 63rd season of FREE Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Central Park through August 6!  The festival features A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, Love's Labors Lost, and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.  Shakespeare’s early romantic comedy, Love's Labor's Lost, is a joyful celebration of love and a coming-of-age story of oaths made and broken, lovers lost and found, and the follies of the heart. Louisville Ballet's Shakespeare in Dance will feature Lady M, and Late Night Shakes brings improvisation to the stage. The final ASL interpretation will be provided for Thursday, July 27 for Two Gentlemen of Verona.

 Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County.  Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans. "Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Streetlight out? Report it. 

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.
