The Budget and Floyds Fork DRO
June 26th, 2023
Let me begin by apologizing for the lack of newsletters from early May until now. That is too long to hear directly from me and I will do better in the back half of the year to stay in touch more frequently.
The good news is we have passed another bipartisan budget with a unanimous vote. This included the following highlights:
- Fully funding LMPD including additional investments in more police officers and technology to fight crime
- Additional resources to combat homelessness through partnerships with Goodwill including additional resources to address homelessness specifically outside of the Watterson Expressway
- The largest investments in infrastructure including:
- $30M in road paving county wide
- $1.5M in bridge and damn repairs
- $3M in sidewalk repairs
- Increased spending on parks across the county
Specific to District 19, there is money to address Aiken Road intersections and money to finalize the recreation of a recycling center to support eastern Jefferson County.
As I said in May, the Mayor did propose the best starting budget I have seen in the last 5 years. With that said there were areas of improvement and, in a bipartisan way, we were able to address feedback we heard from across the county. This included addressing every area of concern I mentioned in my initial newsletter in May. I want to thank Councilman Rick Blackwell and Councilman Kevin Kramer who Chaired and Vice-Chaired the Budget Committee. I want to thank Councilwoman Paula McCraney for her partnership as the Chair of the Democrat Caucus. And finally, thanks to Council President Winkler for his support as well.
