Hello neighbors and friends,

Have you ever walked around the neighborhood and noticed a house that looks unkept or abandoned? Have you walked by that house a second or third time and noticed that it looks worse than it did the first time you saw it? Then, one day on your walk around the neighborhood, did you notice a piece of paper slapped on the door of the abandoned house? (It was likely a code violation warning.) If this has been your experience and you've wondered what is going on, then perhaps you'll be interested in knowing how to report an abandoned house (or car) or one that is in need of a lot of attention and dragging down the beauty of the rest of the neighborhood. Well, wonder no more!

CHECK OUT THIS OPPORTUNITY:

The Louisville Metro Council members will receive an overview of Codes & Regulations on Monday, March 20, at 3:00 p.m. The session will be held in Metro Council Chambers in Historic City Hall, 601 West Jefferson Street. Director Robert Kirchdorfer and Assistant Director Phillip Crowe will be conducting the training.

This information-gathering opportunity is open to the public, so I invite you to join us to hear firsthand about codes and regulations and get answers to your most pressing questions about the upkeep of our city assets.

The Louisville Metro Department of Codes & Regulations Property Maintenance is responsible for helping to prevent the deterioration of our neighborhoods by improving property maintenance. Their goal is to maintain the highest safety and sanitation standards for the many residential and non-residential properties in our community.

Codes and Regulations:

  • Establishes minimum maintenance standards for such elements as basic equipment, light, ventilation, heating, sanitation and fire safety.
  • Monitors the responsibility among owners and occupants for following the code.
  • Regulates the use of existing structures and premises.
  • Provides for administration, enforcement and penalties.

Click Here to Read The Property Maintenance Code:

If you want to search for property maintenance cases that are currently open in Louisville, click here: Search Property Maintenance Issues in Louisville. Detailed information, including the case type, location, date and more will also be shown for each case.

Property Maintenance Division is committed to enforcing Metro's property maintenance, nuisance and zoning codes, which delineates the minimum health, safety and land use standards for all properties. They also help enforce the "Smoke Detector" section of the Fire Prevention Code. Fair but vigorous enforcement of these codes is one of the best ways to ensure that all properties within Louisville Metro are safe, sound, and sanitary.

We all want to make our community a better, safer and healthier place to live and work. So, if you see something, say something, by contacting Codes and Regulations. With your help, Codes & Regs can build a partnership of pride and concern for our community.

Public Works' Storm Recovery Efforts

Trees

After the windstorm hit our city Friday, the dedicated men and women of Metro Public Works quickly went to work and has diligently continued so for the past five days, working extended shifts to ensure that any of our city’s infrastructure that sustained storm damage is restored to normal operations. PWA’s various divisions have been working for our residents; respectively clearing roadways of trees and debris, restoring hundreds of traffic signaling devices to normal operation and assisting residents with storm debris disposal at our 7 debris drop-off sites. The work is ongoing, and our department will continue to work for as long as necessary.

Note: The Department of Public Works is not responsible for restoring utility power, whether gas or electric.

Here are some numbers as of this past Wednesday afternoon:

Electrical Maintenance

  • Has addressed issues at 246 intersections over the last 5 days.
  • Has recovered 232 intersections.
  • There are 16 intersections outstanding, these are mostly due to power outages in the areas.
  • Of the 16, 7 are without any physical damage and should come up on flash and return to service soon.
  • The remaining 9 require additional repairs to the signal heads but most are superficial and shouldn’t require extensive downtime.

Roads and Operations

  • 275 roadways tree/debris removal call for service.
  • 237 completed.
  • 38 incomplete due to power line entanglement.

SWMS

  • Assisted 1,864 residents dispose of storm debris at our 7 drop-off locations.

Hot Water Safety

Hot water

It would be almost impossible to live without hot water, but safety precautions are a must to avoid potentially serious burns. For example, it’s very easy to get scalded in the bath or shower if your water is too hot. Avoid danger and pain with just a few simple steps.

  • Have a plumber install anti-scald devices on faucets and showerheads to keep the water temperature from going above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Check the temperature setting on your water heater and make sure it is no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature of 125 degrees can scald a child within three seconds.
  • Always check bath water with your hand before putting a child in the tub.
  • Turn cold water on before turning on the hot water and turn hot water off before turning off cold water.
  • Make certain faucets are correctly labeled HOT and COLD.

Development Plan 2040

Stay aware of new development in your area!  Sign up for Gov Delivery notifications at:

https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/KYLOUISVILLE/subscriber/new

On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.

Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)

The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.

On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
