March 6, 2023 – BBB serving Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana warns of storm-chasing scammers in the aftermath of the storms that struck Kentucky and Indiana late last week.
With any destructive and severe weather, there is an increased potential of out-of-town storm chasers looking to take advantage of victims as they begin the process of cleaning up and repairing property damage. BBB warns Kentucky and Indiana residents affected by the storms to beware of these scammers.
BBB offers the following tips for storm victims:
- Know your rights and responsibilities as provided by the state Attorney General. Kentucky residents can contact the Kentucky Attorney General’s office at ag.ky.gov or call 502.696.5300.
- Businesses must be licensed. Contact the Revenue Commission at 502.574.4860 to check out a company’s licensure.
- Many municipalities require a solicitation permit if salespeople go door-to-door. Verify that they need to have a permit by contacting your local Township or Municipality or call Permits & Licensing at 502.574.3321
- While most roofing contractors abide by the law, be careful allowing someone you do not know to inspect your roof. An unethical contractor may actually create damage to get work.
- Try to get at least 3-4 quotes from contractors, and insist that payments be made to the company, not an individual.
- Do not pay for the job in advance. Be wary of any contractor who demands full or half payment upfront.
- Resist high-pressure sales tactics, such as the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hire the contractor on the spot.
- Get a written contract that specifies the price, the work to be done, the amount of liability insurance coverage maintained by the contractor, and a time frame. Require a copy of their current certificate of insurance.
- For general questions or complaints related to insurance, contact your state’s Department of Insurance. Kentucky residents can visit insurance.ky.gov or call 502.564.3630.
- Pay by credit card, if possible; you may have additional protection if there’s a problem.
- If you suspect a company may be price gouging necessary goods or services due to the area storm damage, report the business to BBB and the Attorney General’s office.
- Beware of FEMA imposters. In the past, scammers have impersonated FEMA to try to scam consumers. Remember that FEMA does not charge for inspections, and they always wear ID badges. If you are still unsure, check with FEMA first at fema.gov or call 202.646.2500.
BBB is also warning area contractors to beware of storm chasers who are willing to pay local construction companies substantial amounts of money to use a local business’s established name, reputation, and phone so they can masquerade as a local business. Many contractors who agreed to let these storm chasers use their name regret their decision once they were left holding the bag of unsatisfied customers due to bad workmanship and/or unfulfilled warranties.
Finally, as many area homes are still without power, BBB advises consumers to be wary of any scam callers masquerading as gas and electric company employees. LG&E and KU will never call consumers and demand payment immediately over the phone in order to restore power (or prevent it from being shut off). For any concerns regarding utilities, contact your provider directly. Do not give your financial information over the phone to any unsolicited caller.

On Saturday, March 11th our contractor plans to shut down N. English Station Rd. from Aiken to Old Henry Rd. to complete full depth rehabilitation of the roadway. The following weekend, starting Friday night, March 17 and into Saturday, March 18 the roadway will be shut down again for milling and paving of the roadway. Several message boards are being installed today, March 6, to notify users of the upcoming closures.
Closure necessary as contractor advances on repairs to bridge
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 9, 2023) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the weekend closure of the bridge carrying Buechel Bypass (U.S. 31E/U.S. 150) over a set of railroad tracks in Jefferson County.
The bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. on Friday, March 10, to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, between mile point 10.4 and mile point 10.5. That’s between the cross streets of Plaza Avenue and Hikes Lane. During the bridge closure, signs in the area will direct drivers to utilize Hikes Lane, Shepherdsville Road, Buechel Bank Road and Progress Boulevard as the posted detour.
Various closures have been in place for the bridge since a February 2021 inspection found deterioration on one of the bridge’s pier caps. The repairs were initially delayed as KYTC and the contractor sought approval from the railroad to work on the bridge section over the tracks. Last year, crews began working under the bridge, in an area not visible to motorists crossing the span. Those repairs have now advanced to a point where the weekend closure of the entire bridge is necessary. The repairs are expected to be completed in spring 2023.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. You can also get traffic information for the District 5 counties at facebook.com/KYTCDistrict5 and twitter.com/KYTCDistrict5.
Drivers should use caution in work zones
Pothole patching on Interstate 265 (Gene Snyder Freeway) will require a lane closure Friday, March 10. The work is part of the I-Move Kentucky project.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, the right lane of I-265 South between Old Henry Road (Exit 29) and U.S. 60/Shelbyville Road (Exit 27) will be closed for pothole patching.
Work schedules may be adjusted due to weather or other unforeseen events.
Drivers should use caution when traveling through active work zones. Signage will be in place to alert drivers of active construction zones and closures.

  Cat of the Week:
One Eyed Ollie is ready for a furever home! Before coming to the shelter poor Ollie’s eye was injured, so it had to be removed. Ollie was placed with a foster family until he healed and ready to be adopted.
He’s a shy kitten and according to our vet staff, ‘spicy’, so there won’t be any dull moments this 5-month-old. One Eyed Ollie’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Ollie’s already neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Ollie is friendly with other cats and dog testing is available by request. For more info about Ollie, call 502-473-PETS. Meet One Eyed Ollie at Animal House Adoption Center, located at 3516 Newburg, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily. To view all adoptable cats at LMAS, click here. Dog of the Week:
A teenage goofball with lots of personality, that’s what was on CK Dexter Haven’s field trip report. He had a blast spending a day outside of the shelter which included visiting a park and a pet store. He was a very good boy during his outing and proved he’s a tug-o-war champ. CK’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter and included is one-year free membership to Club K9 Dog Bar. Ck is an approximately one-year-old American Staffordshire mix who weighs 54 lbs. He’s already neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. CK gets along great with other dogs, but he needs a cat-free home. For more info about CK, email animalservicesadoption@louisvilleky.gov. Meet CK Dexter Haven from at Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road). . To view all adoptable dogs at LMAS, click here. TARC is asking for your input on the following proposed changes to ten routes. These changes are being suggested to adjust service to where it is most needed and make sure routes are operating effectively. These adjustments will go into effect on Sunday, August 6, 2023.
Two open-house public meetings to discuss these changes in greater detail are scheduled to take place:
Tuesday, March 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Southwest Public Library, 9725 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272 Wednesday, March 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Union Station, 1000 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40203 Public comments regarding these changes will be accepted through April 25th and may be submitted via mail or in person at Union Station, 1000 West Broadway, Louisville, KY 40203, in-person during the public meetings, by phone at (502) 585-1234, or by email to: PublicComment@ridetarc.org.
TARC is reviewing and analyzing proposed service changes to ensure this proposal does not create any disproportionate burden or disparate impact on low-income and minority populations in the TARC service area. Federally required Title VI evaluation will be developed to address any potential impact of these changes, and propose mitigation measures if required. Title VI evaluation and outcomes will be presented to the TARC Board of Directors at the Board meeting on May 23rd for their review and approval.
Click each route description below to view a map of the proposed changes for that route.
Route 4 – Fourth Street will extend to New Cut Road to improve access to Walmart and offer a one-seat-ride from Downtown Louisville to the New Cut and Outer Loop area. Some minor adjustments to service times will also be implemented, and service to Strawberry lane will be discontinued.
Route 6 – Sixth Street will add trips to University of Louisville St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital, and will reduce route frequency from 30 to 40 minutes between buses on weekdays, and from 50 to 60 minutes on weekends.
Route 10 – Dixie Rapid will be extended south of Dixie Gardens to pick up morning and afternoon trips to Watson Lane, due to Route 18 realignment to the Manslick Road area. Minor adjustments to service times on Route 10 will be implemented.
Route 18 – Dixie Highway will be rerouted to Manslick Road just north of Crums Lane, traveling along Bluegrass to Hazelwood to St. Andrews Church Rd. The route will also travel along Stonestreet Road, 3rd Street Road and Valley Station to provide service to the University of Louisville Medical Center Southwest and Jefferson Community and Technical College Southwest Campus. There will be major changes to service times, and changes in frequency on this route from 30 to 40 minutes all day.
Route 72 – Clarksville will have adjustments to service times and stop locations on weekdays, including frequency changes to 50-minutes all day. No adjustments to Saturday and Sunday service are proposed.
Route 74 – Chamberlain Ln – River Ridge will provide service from Downtown Louisville to Accomack Drive, and create new, semi-express morning and afternoon service from Downtown Louisville to Westport Road. Changes to this route will also improve service to Ballard High School, and the new Veterans Hospital site.
The following routes will be discontinued:
Route17X Bardstown Road Express will no longer operate as express service. Adequate service will be provided with current trips on local Route 17.
Route 31X Middletown Express will no longer operate as express service. Adequate service will be provided with current trips on local Route 31.
Route 40X Jeffersontown Express will no longer operate as express service; one trip has been added in the morning as a local trip. The area currently being served will continued to be covered with local Route 40 trips with this proposal, including service to Billtown Road.
Route 61X Plainview Express will be discontinued. Most of the area currently served by this route will continue to be served with this proposal by local Route 31.

U.S. Representative Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) will submit funding requests for important community projects to the House Appropriations Committee for fiscal year 2024 (FY24).
Under guidelines issued by the Appropriations Committee, each Representative may request funding for up to 15 projects in their community for FY24 – although there is no guarantee they will be funded by the Appropriations Committee. Projects are restricted to a limited number of federal funding streams, and only state and local governments and eligible non-profit entities are permitted to receive funding. Additional information on the rules governing Community Project Funding is available here.
In the interest of transparency and accountability, all Members are required to post all Community Project Funding requests submitted to the committee on their website. In compliance with House Rules and Committee requirements, Rep. McGarvey will certify that he, his spouse, and his immediate family have no financial interest in any of the projects he has requested.
Please submit all FY 2024 Appropriations requeststhrough my office’s application portal. The deadline to submit projects for consideration is 11:59 PM on Friday, March 17, 2023.
Please visit my Community Project Funding resource guide for additional information.
Please note:
Rep. McGarvey will not accept CPF requests for projects outside of Kentucky’s third congressional district. All projects must meet the relevant statutory and administrative criteria for funding through the grant program under which it is submitted. A request submitted to Rep. McGarvey does NOT guarantee the project will be selected. The selection of a project does NOT guarantee it will be funded by the Appropriations Committee.
Eligible Entities and Projects
Only state and local government entities, public institutions, and non-profit entities are eligible to submit and receive CPF funding. Funding cannot be directed to for-profit entities and will not include waivers for state or local match requirements. While matching funds do not have to be in-hand prior to the request, requesting entities must have a plan to meet such requirements for the project to be viable. Additionally, each submission must be for FY24 only and cannot include multi-year funding requests. The Committee will only consider projects with demonstrated community support in the form of: letters from local elected officials; press articles highlighting need; support from newspaper editorial boards; mentions on state intended use plans, community development plans, or other publicly available planning documents; resolutions passed by city councils or boards; etc.
