Hello neighbors and friends,

February is known as the sweetheart month, and it is also American Heart Month. In the month of February, we give and receive flowers, boxes of chocolates, and mushy cards. Flowers are nice, and so is a box of candy; however, if we really want to show our love – for our family and our self, we should focus instead on the health of our heart. So, before February ends, I want to encourage you to take care of your heart.

Did you know that in America, one out of every three of us will face heart disease? The statistics are sobering, and it is still a fact that heart disease remains the #1 killer of adults. Preventing heart disease is possible if we pay attention to a few basic details such as talking with our primary care provider (please get one if you don’t already have one!) and keeping an eye on critical measurements like weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. We should always know our numbers. Here are a few other steps we can take to prevent heart disease:

  • Quit smoking
  • Eat more whole foods and avoid sugar
  • Be physically active every day
  • Reduce stress
  • Limit alcohol intake
  • Use the buddy system for accountability

It’s important to make heart-healthy lifestyle modifications and move about throughout the day to increase our steps. Remember that a body at rest stays at rest, whereas a body in motion stays in motion. We need to prioritize exercising.

So, along with giving candy, cards, and flowers, or telling our loved ones we love them, let’s show them how much we care by taking steps toward better cardiac health. Yes, February is American heart month, but every month is a great time to protect our hearts.

Text "LENSAlert" to 67283 to start receiving emergency notifications.

In 2016 Louisville Metro Emergency Services teamed up with Bullitt, Oldham, Nelson and Washington Counties to create a regional emergency notification system – Louisville Emergency Notification System (LENSAlert). Its enhanced capabilities include using all communication modes to send alerts – mobile phones, landlines, email, text, social media, and IPAWS-OPEN.

In addition to receiving notifications, individuals can create a Safety Profile for themselves and their household that can include any information they want 9-1-1 and first responders to have in the event of an emergency. When individuals make an emergency call, their Safety Profile is automatically displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker, allowing them to send the right responders to the right location with the right information. Information about medical history, allergies to medication, number of residents in a home and even a picture of the family dog can all be added to a Safety Profile.

On January 1, 2019, a new Comprehensive Plan, called Plan 2040, went into effect. As a resident of District 7 (or any district in Louisville), it is important to review the Comprehensive Plan if you are interested in development that is proposed for the neighborhood. The Comprehensive Plan is the guidepost for all development, and the Planning Commission must use it as one of the guiding principles and tools for making decisions regarding the approval or denial of a neighborhood development project.

Read The Comprehensive Plan (Plan 2040)

The Comprehensive Plan is representative of over 6,000 voices, including Metro staff, an advisory committee, and resident volunteers. The Advisory Committee, made up of diverse representatives from neighborhood and community organizations as well as development and business interests, finalized its recommended goals, objectives, and policies on February 21, 2018.

On April 16, 2018, the Planning Commission recommended the Comprehensive Plan for approval. The document was then reviewed by the Metro Council as well as 12 local municipalities with zoning authority for formal adoption. Those 12 local municipalities are: Anchorage, Douglass Hills, Graymoor-Devondale, Hurstbourne, Indian Hills, Jeffersontown, Lyndon, Middletown, Prospect, Shively, St. Matthews, and St. Regis Park.
