Metro Council Districts 3 and 6 were left without representatives when Keisha Dorsey and David James resigned last month to take leadership roles in Mayor Craig Greenberg’s administration.
Last night, Louisville Metro Council members voted in District 3 and District 6 councilmen:
For Council District 3, Kumar Rashad received 16 votes. Councilman Rashad, Mathematics Department Chair for Breckinridge Metropolitan High School, replaces Dorsey in District 3, where he has lived for the last seven years. The councilman holds a master’s degree of Arts and Teaching.
Phillip T. Baker received 20 votes for Council District 6, which includes Old Louisville and Shelby Park. Baker is a family resource coordinator at Coleridge-Taylor Montessori School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree. He has lived in District 6 for the last three years.
Immediately after the vote, Councilmembers Kumar Rashad and Phillip T. Baker took the Oath of Office and then participated in their first Council meeting. Both council seats will be on the ballot for a special election on November 7. Councilmembers Rashad and Baker will serve until the special election results are certified, around mid-November.
The process For District 3, nine eligible candidates were invited to interview with one withdrawing prior to the interviews on Monday during the Special Committee of the Whole meeting.
For District 6, twenty-one eligible candidates were invited to interview, with seven withdrawing prior to the interviews on Tuesday during the Special Committee of the Whole meeting. All applications were reviewed by the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office prior to the interview process.
