New Years Eve events were monitored by LMPD in real time despite not being reported by the media until recently
Dear Neighbor,
Our office has had numerous calls and emails about a series of what LMPD believes to be potentially gang-related activity that took place on New Year's Eve. An update to the initial stories that have circulated in local media recently is below.
Most people, myself included, are alarmed by a headline that reads "600" followed by shells/bullets/casings. That is really just one statistic about these unfortunate events.
While it is obscene to have a statistic like that materialize in our neighborhoods, there is more to the story. Some details we are sharing below for clarity. Others are still not known to us as these events are still being investigated.
Some important things you should know are:
1) LMPD was aware of potential gang-related activity in the area. They were on hand anticipating these events
2) The events shifted when the bad actors realized LMPD was on the scene
3) Initially, the number of casings found were smaller, and that number grew as the investigation proceeded this year.
4) Nobody was injured or killed during the gun discharges- despite the reports of hundreds of casings found at the scene
5) LMPD reached out to our office in the immediate days following these incidents. More information has come to light subsequently. The investigation is ongoing.
6) LMPD had nothing to do with media outlets choosing not to cover these events.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Brent T. Ackerson 26th District Councilman
