LMAS Offers Free Straw to Cat and Dog Owners Ahead of Extreme Cold Weather

a

The coldest weather of the season is on its way to the Louisville area. With single-digit temperatures predicted in the coming days Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) has free straw available to owners of cats and dogs that cannot be brought inside during frigid weather. LMAS will be distributing straw Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Friday Dec. 23, until supply runs out.

“We ask that you bring your pet inside but understand that not every pet can be kept inside so it is important to provide adequate shelter with proper protection from the elements,” said Ashley Book, interim director of LMAS. “By providing straw for pet owners who need it, we are fulfilling our mission to serve the citizens of Louisville and ensure the humane treatment of domesticated animals.”

Cold weather tips include:

  • Do not keep pets outside for long periods of time
  • Outside pets need a warm, solid shelter against wind and temperatures
  • Shelter floor should be off the ground (to minimize heat loss into the ground) with thick, dry bedding such as straw (not blankets)
  • Position shelter door away from winds
  • Space heaters and heat lamps should be avoided because of the risk of burns or fire
  • Heated pet mats should also be used with caution because they are still capable of causing burns

Cat and dog owners can pick up straw Wednesday, Dec. 21 through Friday, Dec. 23, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the LMAS Harshaw Family Foundation Animal Shelter, located at 3528 Newburg Road. Residents will need photo identification or proof of residency.

The Louisville Animal Ordinance requires pet owners to provide proper shelter from the elements and fresh water for animals kept outside. Residents can report a pet left without proper shelter or fresh water by contacting LMAS animal control at 502-473-PETS.

At the start of his administration, Mayor Greg Fischer pledged to replace the city’s only open intake shelter, which had operated for decades as a high-kill shelter. Today, with the opening of a state-of-the-art Harshaw Family Foundation Animal Shelter in 2019 and Alley Cat Advocates headquarters in 2020, all the city’s animal-related services are located on one campus on Newburg Road, where residents can adopt a pet, purchase, or renew a pet license or take a stray pet. In 2017, LMAS qualified as a No Kill Shelter for time and space for the first time, achieving a 92.8% live release rate for animals that entered the shelter.
