 District 6 Constituents,
I have been appointed to Craig Greenberg’s administration as Deputy Mayor of Emergency Services. My time as Metro Councilman of District 6 has come to an end.
The last 12 years as your representative have been an honor and a privilege, to say the least. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support towards making our district the best it can be. As the district moves forward, I encourage you all to stay connected in the community and with this office, thru my successor.
My last day of service in district 6 will be January 4th. The district 6 seat vacancy will be filled pursuant to KRS 67C.103.
Many of you have questions regarding the process of filling my open seat, such as:
- What is the process for a Council member to resign?
- When would a Council member’s resignation take effect?
- What is the process for filling a Metro Council vacancy?
- What is the length of the appointment to a Metro Council vacancy?
- Are there any differences if a vacancy occurs in an even numbered district or an odd
numbered district?
- Is an election necessary to fill an unexpired term?
- If an election is needed, how are candidates nominated
You can find the answer to all of these questions in section 10 (page 30) of the Metro Council Rules.
I am looking forward to a new direction for our wonderful city under the new administration, and am eager to get to work.
Thank you, and see you around!
Party candidates The statute sets out two methods for nomination of party candidates, and the applicable method depends on the timing of the vacancy in relation to the primary election date. If a vacancy occurs more than 160 days before a primary election, then “candidates for unexpired terms to be filled at a regular election shall be nominated at the primary next preceding the regular election....” KRS 118.115(1). If, however, the vacancy occurs less than 160 days before the primary election date, then “the nomination shall be made in a manner determined by the governing authority of the political party concerned as defined in KRS 118.015.” KRS 118.115(2). The 2023 primary election is scheduled for May 16, 2023. Because the next primary election is already less than 160 days away, party nominations for any vacancy would be governed by KRS 118.115(2). KRS 118.115(2) states, “If the vacancy occurred less than one hundred sixty (160) days before the primary, the nomination shall be made in a manner determined by the governing authority of the political party concerned as defined in KRS 118.015. Certificates of nomination shall be filed as required with the Secretary of State or county clerk not later than the first Tuesday after the first Monday in June preceding the day fixed by law for the election.” Therefore, the nominations would be filed with the Jefferson County Clerk2 on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
