Dear Neighbor,
Last Saturday, despite snow, wind, and cold temperatures, dozens of neighbors joined us for our annual District 26 Town Hall. We had representatives from many Metro Government agencies and departments. I hope this opportunity for you to engage with those who lead city services was beneficial. I also hope for better weather next year. As always, if you were not able to make it, you are welcome to direct questions or concerns to our office and we will do what we can to help you.
Below is a brief report on the meeting and some concerns we heard on Saturday.

26th District Councilman
Councilman Ackerson opened the meeting.
CM Ackerson spoke about the budget surplus ($31MM) that will be allocated before the end of the year. Several different projects that will impact different parts of the city. $20MM is scheduled to go into the Rainy Day fund. This amount is subject to change by the upcoming Budget Committee and Metro Council meetings.
CM Ackerson noted that we are placing over two dozen speed radar signs in the district. These are headed for places with a history of speeding and disregard for other traffic signals.
CM Ackerson welcomed Lt. Chief Steven Healy from LMPD to address public safety efforts in D26.
Chief Healey led with a statement that LMPD is returning to a structure where each Division would have an "Impact Platoon" that would address issues specific to the division. Each division has unique crime and a specialized force of uniformed officers would focus their efforts on addressing that specific type of crime (property violent, narcotics, etc.). They would be supported by larger teams if needed. They would add to the visible presence of LMPD in the district and division.
LMPD's goals right now are to increase homicide arrests. They contracted with an outside DNA processing firm to free up manpower for other things.
Narcotics unit has shifted focus to higher-level crimes. They have 75 federal indictments this year. Most federal crimes that go to trial end in conviction. Very proud of that stat.
LMPD has had larger recruit classes lately. There were 27 recruits in the last class. That means more officers are headed to the 6th Division.
CM Ackerson welcomed Jeff Brown, assistant director of Louisville Metro Public Works. CM Ackerson stated that Jeff was here to tell us about Hikes Lane and the paving projects promised for several years.
Mr. Brown said that all the bids that came back for Hikes Lane were over budget. They plan to put the project back out for bid.
There are additional monies for sidewalk repairs ($1MM). They divide sidewalk resources into requests for repairs and proactive repairs. The Yarmuth funds announced last year are for proactive repairs and those decisions are made by Public Works not the Council office.
They have 2-3 pothole crews running every day. Call Metro 311 or Councilman Ackerson's office to report potholes. You can also report them online.
CM Ackerson welcomed Lee Burchfield, director of the Louisville Free Public Library to speak.
Mr. Burchfield noted that they are starting work on a new Fern Creek Library next to the high school. They need to demo some items on the site. They have hired an architectural firm to do the design and construction documents. There are ARP monies and Metro Capital funds committed to the project. The Library Foundation is also covering part of the cost of the new library.
CM Ackerson closed the opening portion of the meeting and invited participants to visit with the agency representatives.
- Public Works has/will send technicians to Hikes Lane and Bardstown Rd. intersection to make sure stoplights are working properly and timed correctly
- Nadina Dr. is confirmed to be on the paving schedule for this fiscal year (July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2023)
- Pothole crews will address Cawein Way needs. It is on the paving schedule for the next fiscal year.
- The temporary concrete patch following Louisville Water Co. work on Furman between Taylorsville and Argyle will be milled down and replaced with asphalt per Louisville Metro policy.

- Metal & appliances, no refrigerators or any items containing coolant (recycled)
- Up to 4 passenger tires (recycled)
- Household recyclables, follow curbside rules (recycled)
- Yard waste, follow curbside rules, wooden pallets (composted)

Large household items (landfilled)
- Documents for shredding (recycled)
- Prescription medication (disposed properly)
Items must already be separated into categories for easy off-loading so as much can be recycled as possible.
Not Accepted:
- Garbage, loose debris (use curbside garbage collection or take to landfill)
- Concrete, bricks, rocks
- Construction materials (take to Waste Reduction Center, fees apply)
- Refrigerators or items containing coolant (take to Waste Reduction Center, or metal recycling facility)
- Latex paint (disposal information)
- Batteries, light bulbs, oil-based paint, varnishes, stains, and other household hazardous waste (take to Haz Bin)
- Tree trunks
- Boats, hot tubs
- Items from businesses
- Trailers greater than 10 feet in length (larger loads can be taken to the Waste Reduction Center)
