Happy Wednesday! I don't typically send mid-week newsletters, but I wanted to follow up a bit on last night’s elections. I hope you'll forgive me when you get another newsletter on Friday!
Let me first say that I am honored to be serving as your representative on the Metro Council for another four years. I truly appreciate the support and will continue working to ensure our area and our city are great places to live.
I want to thank my opponents, whether they ran in the primary or the general election, and all those who put their name on the ballot this year. Competitive races are the core of our democracy, serving as an important check on those in office. Putting yourself out there is a very rewarding, but also a very challenging, process. The stress is difficult to describe, and the impact it has on loved ones is significant. The families supporting those who ran deserve our gratitude as well.
I would also like to offer a few observations about what occurred last night. First, I think residents in our area should be very proud of their level of engagement in the election. Each of the 26 Metro Council districts is roughly the same size (in terms of population). Our district was top three in terms of the number of votes cast - another foundational part of a functioning democracy. It is heartening to see so many of our neighbors taking part in the process.
Second, I hope we can use the election as a turning point for our city. As you know, we will have a new mayor in 2023. Whether he was your top choice or not, we should all want the mayor-elect to be successful. I look forward to working with the new administration on common-sense solutions to the many issues facing our city. There will be much more to say in the coming months as the transition to a new administration takes place, but rest assured we will be there to support the successes and seek accountability for any shortcomings.
As always, please let me know if I can help you in any way.
