+ Courier Journal: How Hispanic businesses are transforming Preston Highway

Courier Journal recently interviewed Office for Globalization's Program Manager, Amos Izerimana and Senior Small Business Development Manager, Christy Jarboe about the development and diversity of the Preston Corridor, as well as spoke to local immigrant business owners.
“Today, Duarte and her husband, owners of La Morena Panaderia y Tortillera, are part of a growing number of Hispanic entrepreneurs who are revitalizing Preston Highway, an 11-mile corridor long marred by vacant storefronts.
For Nagely Duarte, the dream of America and business ownership is one passed down from her parents. In 1985 at 16 years old, Duarte's father walked from Guatemala and swam across the Río Bravo into Texas for a new life in the United States. Nine years later her mother would follow her father to the U.S. The Duarte’s settled in Okolona around 2010 and, believing the neighborhood could become their home, pushed through weird looks and stares they often received. They felt out of place for four years, but eventually, the family's determination to “stick it out” paid off.”
