Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! Hope you are enjoying this great weather. If you are like my wife and love your sleep, here is a friendly reminder that this weekend marks maybe her favorite holiday of the year - Fall Back! I'm not looking forward to dusk at 4 p.m., but I'll be happy my kids are no longer walking to school in the dark!

In Metro Council news this week, we continued discussing and working on several important pieces of legislation. These include ordinances around lead remediation in older structures, rental registry requirements, and the lobbying of metro officials. We also heard from the Healthcare CEO Council on our latest ARP proposal that I discussed last week. This legislation should be finalized in the coming weeks. There will be more to share on these items after they are voted on by the full Metro Council (as there are often changes to legislation throughout the process). My goal with all of these will be to pass reasonable, narrowly-tailored legislation that solves the underlying issue without over-regulating and creating unintended consequences.

We'll soon be turning our attention to the mid-year budget adjustment, which by early accounts should be very positive. My hope there is we'll take a conservative approach, setting aside as much money as possible for future needs (like a new Corrections facility, for example). We put more than $30 million aside for this in the budget passed in June. Adding another $10-20 million would go a long way towards funding a new facility with limited to no additional borrowing. That would be a huge shift from our traditional approach to capital projects and a step in the right direction, I think.

Finally, I want to highlight the information you need for Election Day. I did so last Friday as well, but I think this information merits another mention as one precinct in our district recently had the voting location changed AFTER notification cards went out. (Our understanding is this had to do with some accessibility concerns with the initial site.) Those impacted should receive a new notice soon if they haven't already. For the most current information on polling locations (and a host of other related topics), click here or call the Jefferson County Clerk's Election Center at 574-6100.

Enjoy your weekend (and your extra hour of sleep)!

Public Hearings - 10201 Brownsboro Road

BOZA

The public is invited to participate in two hearings later this month regarding proposed changes to property located at 10201 Brownsboro Road. The revised detailed district development plan would permit the construction of a grocery store. The proposal also includes an outlot near the Ballardsville Road/Brownsboro Road intersection and subdividing off another part of the property to the east, though there are no plans for that parcel yet. The variance being considered by the Board of Zoning Adjustment would allow the grocery store to exceed the 150' setback along Ballardsville Road. Please contact the case manager listed above with any questions or comments.

KYTC Seeks Input on Possible Shelbyville Road Improvements

crash heat map

The crash heat map above reflects crash history in the study area. Yellow represents a high concentration of crashes.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is developing a project to improve Shelbyville Road between Old Shelbyville Road and North English Station Road/Urton Lane. The project would also look at the adjacent traffic signals at Eastgate Shopping Center and I-265. The purpose of this work would be to decrease congestion, improve safety, and increase the road's capacity.

KYTC's team has reviewed existing conditions and previous input from stakeholders to develop some preliminary concepts. Potential changes could include corridor-wide improvements, intersection-specific reconfigurations, and a no-build option. KYTC would like to have your input as well. You can view the StoryMap here to get an idea of what is proposed and why and then complete a short survey here. The survey will be open through November 18.

LIHEAP Fall Subsidy Begins Monday

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience & Community Services began accepting appointments today for the fall subsidy component of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) which runs from November 7 through December 16 or until funds are depleted. Individuals or families at or below 130% of the federal poverty guidelines who are responsible for home energy cost, whether directly or as an undesignated portion of rent, are eligible for assistance. Appointments are required in advance to apply. Call 502-991-8391 or click here to start the application process.
