Kentucky’s urban communities have celebrated Tree Week in October and Louisville is joining them this year. Tree Week 2022 events include tree giveaways, tree plantings, tree walks, tree story times, and much more. It is presented by Trees Louisville.
As the University of Kentucky’s Urban Forest Initiative writes, “Now more than ever, it is imperative that we look to our tree canopy as a source of strength and relief in the face of a changing climate. Trees in our communities help to offset the negative effects of climate change. They reduce storm-water runoff, cool cities, filter air and water pollutants, store carbon dioxide, and help improve mental health and well-being. Tree Week 2022 is aimed at helping us join to appreciate and support our trees so that they may continue to provide these important benefits for us. Learning to properly care for a tree, planting new trees, and even learning to name trees are all things that we can do to support the trees where we live. Celebrate trees and learn more about how you can support our urban forest during Tree Week 2022.”

One of the questions we frequently get is “when is the next junk pickup?”. If you live in the D9 section of the Urban Services District (USD), you may begin setting out your junk Friday, October 14th in the afternoon. All junk must be set out by Monday, October 17th at 6:00 a.m.
Some items (hazardous materials, construction debris, etc.) are not collected and THESE RULES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED. We continue to hear from residents who have set out construction debris and are disappointed when it is not collected, and they are forced to remove it. Louisville Water Company is implementing a multi-year project to upgrade the city’s water meters. In the coming weeks, contractors and employees will do work in a portion of District 9 to replace older meters with new ones. Those streets in District 9 that will be impacted are:
- Clover Lane
- Richland Avenue
- Exchange Avenue
- Ridgeway Avenue
- Dellridge Drive
- Primrose Drive
- Westport Drive
Customers will be sent a postcard in advance of the work. The installation is quick and will only result in water being turned off for a short period of time, typically less than 30 minutes. Before the work is performed LWC will knock on the door to let the customer know what it is doing. A note will be left on the door when the work is complete. Louisville Water contractor Grid One Solutions will do most of the meter upgrades. Their vehicles will have an orange and black Grid One logo and LWC contractor signs. YES! (Youth Engagement Services) is creating a 26-member Metro Louisville Youth Cabinet. The youth cabinet will serve as the leadership team for all Neighborhood Youth Boards which will be developed in all Metro Council Districts. The YES! cabinet will work directly with Louisville’s Mayor and Metro Council to offer advice on policy, community building and equity both locally and nationally. There is a $1000 yearly stipend for members of the board.
Cabinet Membership will be selected via a competitive online application process. The deadline for applications is October 15th, 2022. The requirements are:
- Age 16 -24
- Lives in Louisville
- Ability to attend mandatory bi-monthly meetings
- Serve a minimum of one year

Whitehall House & Gardens will host its fourth annual Bluegrass Music in the Garden event on Friday October 7th from 7 to 9 PM. Doors open at 6PM and food and drinks will be available for purchase from Boss Hog’s Barbecue, Marigold’s Catering Mobile Bar, and the Cookie Cabin Creamery. A limited amount of seating will be available under the tent and guests are welcome to bring their own chairs and blankets. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10.00 for children ages 5 to 12 (children under 5 are free). Proceeds will benefit Whitehall House & Gardens, a historic home owned and operated by the not-for-profit Historic Homes Foundation. The mansion began its life in the mid-1850s as an Italianate farmhouse. After extensive renovations in 1909, the house was transformed into the Classical Greek Revival style mansion known today as Whitehall. Its collection features original gaslight fixtures and French and American antiques. Guided tours are offered Monday through Friday, at 11AM and 1PM.

Saturday, October 8th the Frankfort Avenue Business Association invites its neighbors to come out for live music, entertainment and activities all along the avenue. Enjoy fall specials from many of your favorite restaurants and businesses. Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes.

Bowmanfest showcases and celebrates the iconic Bowman Field landmark through live encounters with historic military and civilian aircraft displays, historical plane and helicopter rides, vintage auto displays, military exhibits and reenactments and NEW for 2022, an aerobatic airshow. There will be food trucks and the 2-acre Kids Zone including giant bouncy obstacles (included with admission) and a pumpkin patch. Bowmanfest brings the past to life in a dramatic and fun way creating an exciting and educational experience for all ages.

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular at Iroquois Park is back! Celebrating its tenth year the event will run from October 4th through October 31st with the trail opening at dusk. Boo at the Zoo begins on October 1st and will continue through October 30th (Thursday through Sunday). A Louisville tradition for over 40 years, Boo at the Zoo, presented by Meijer, transforms the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with some of your favorite characters brought to life, fun music and a safe place for trick-or-treating for kids 11 and under. Your party ticket includes all rides, attractions and parking — giving you the merry you love without any scary add-ons. Parking is easy and convenient in the Zoo’s lot and FREE for party guests.

During trunk or treat events volunteers will decorate the back of their cars for Halloween, load up on candy, and come sit in a parking lot for kids to "trick or treat" from car-to-car. Please mark your calendars and join us for one more D9 Cleanup. On Saturday, October 22, in partnership with Brightside, volunteers will be working along the Frankfort Avenue corridor, picking up litter, working on tree wells and generally making things brighter and cleaner. Volunteers should plan to meet at 9:00 a.m. at the public parking lot at Frankfort and Keats Avenues. The D9 office will provide bags, gloves, and tools on a first-come, first-served basis. You’ll need to return tools, but you can work wherever you like.

Listen, Learn, Act (LLA) is providing a 4-week Anti-Racism Challenge (ARC) beginning October 1 and continuing through October 28. This is how it works -- every Friday morning, participants receive an email with a list of 10-12 anti-racism activities. Participants are asked to choose and complete 3 of the listed activities.
