A GROUP OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS RESCUED AN INJURED WOMAN TRAPPED IN HER CAR AFTER A WRECK
A group of high school football players in northern Georgia jumped out of their cars while on the way to school to help free an injured woman who was trapped after a wreck.
Treyvon Adams, 16, was driving to school Friday morning with his teammates Antwion Carey, 16, Tyson Brown, 17, and Alto Moore, 16, when they saw the crash. The four are members of the Rome High School football team.
Fellow player Cesar Parker, 16, was in another vehicle with his mother, and got out to help with the rescue. Another student, Messiah Daniels, was also involved.
As soon as the teens saw the car wreck, "we just ran as fast we could to the lady and to check on her to see if she was alright," Adams said.
They found the woman inside her car, trapped by doors that had been damaged in the crash and wouldn't open.
"We were seeing she was in pain, she was screaming and asking us to help her," Adams said.
The door of the vehicle was jammed, and the woman could not get out.
The students working to free the woman from the wrecked vehicle.
School math teacher Luis Goya, who called 911 after seeing the accident, said the athletes rushed to go help the woman out of her car.
"They literally started using their strength to pry the door open, so the lady could be released. After a few seconds of pulling and pushing the door, the boys ended up opening it and helped her get out of the car. She was shaking and still in panic, but our RHS boys gave her comfort and were able to help her," Goya wrote in a Facebook post at the time.
"The Rome High School football players really showed up today. They went above and beyond to help this lady without hesitation," Goya continued.
"Everybody is calling us heroes and saying we saved a life and saying a whole bunch of positive things about us. But you know, I feel as if we did the right thing," Adams said. "You know, I wouldn't feel right if we didn't do that. I feel like ‘hero’ is a bit of a stretch. We just did what was right."
The high school football players were honored for their efforts to save the woman involved in the car crash.
The young men were later recognized for their heroism and named honorary first responders. Parker, Adams, Carey, Brown and Moore were presented awards by the first responders who arrived at the scene of the crash.
It's wonderful to see a story with young people in the news that is positive. Bravo to these students for not just standing around filming the accident to post online but jumping in to assist someone in need. Their community should be very proud of these young men.

A Variety of Delicious Salads
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
In the last two years, we have all experienced new challenges that have affected our mental, physical, and social well-being. Many of us have felt tired and stressed, which is why wellness and self-care are more important than ever before. Our wellness journey is an ongoing one, and we have to prioritize our emotional and physical health. Here are some ideas to care for the many dimensions of wellness, so we can nourish our bodies and nurture our minds.
BENEFITS OF EATING A SALAD
Hot summer weather and cool crisp and refreshing salads go together like salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly and macaroni and cheese. Salads are easy to make, and have many health benefits. Eating a serving of leafy greens each day can be one of the best habits to get into, summer or winter.
To get the most nutritional impact from your salads, let’s look at some of their benefits, what ingredients add extra dietary punch, and what to avoid to ensure that your dish stays healthy and nutritious.
A SALAD A DAY KEEPS DISEASE AND AGING AT BAY
Eating a large serving of fresh, raw vegetables each day can have significant health benefits. Salads make a substantial contribution to disease prevention, healthy weight and energy.
A NATURAL SOURCE OF FIBER
Leafy greens and raw veggies are a great source of natural fiber, and consuming enough fiber each day has several health advantages. Fiber helps to reduce “bad” cholesterol, helps to control blood sugar, helps with weight loss and healthy weight maintenance. Sufficient fiber consumption normalizes bowel movements, and aids in the prevention of bowel disease, has been shown to reduce the recurrence and prevention of a number of cancers including colorectal, breast, mouth, throat and esophagus.

BERRY SALAD
Depending on your local produce, berries are a great source of anti-oxidants in your meals. Leaves and radishes may be added. Dressings are optional since berries are full of flavor and add a burst of tanginess to a salad.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF FRESH FRUITS & VEGETABLES
We all know that fresh vegetables and fruits are essential to good health and well-being. A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar which can help keep appetite in check.
It’s important to eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, in as many different colors as possible. Combining them in a salad is both easy and delicious! Loaded with vitamins and minerals, eating a salad a day will also increase the level of powerful antioxidants in your blood.
Brightly colored fruits and vegetables in the “red” family are of particular nutrition benefit. This includes produce with orange, purple, red and burgundy flesh. Try tomatoes, red and orange peppers, carrots, strawberries, nectarines, peaches, plums, blueberries blackberries, cranberries, and pomegranates.

AIDS YOUR INTAKE OF HEALTHY FATS
Add a couple of tablespoons of mixed raw or roasted seeds like pumpkin, sesame, sunflower and ground flax or chia to boost your daily intake of good fats. Slicing a quarter of an avocado and adding it to your greens will also give you a boost. These foods also help the body to absorb all of the protective compounds, phytochemicals, and lutein.
PROTECTS YOUR HEART
Romaine lettuce contains two key nutrients in significant levels that help to protect the heart muscle: folate and fiber. High levels of folate have been shown to assist in the prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
NICOISE SALAD
BUILDS STRONG BONES
Low vitamin K levels have been linked with low bone mineral density in women. For healthy bone growth, a recommended full daily serving can be found in just 1 cup of watercress (100%), radicchio (120%) or spinach (170%).
PROTECTS YOUR EYES
The carotenoids found in the green leafy vegetables like spinach, Romaine and Red Lettuce help the eyes to adjust from bright to dark, and to filter out high intensity light levels, protecting them from the formation of damaging free radicals.

FRUIT SALAD
SALAD MISTAKES TO AVOID
The many potential health benefits of adding a salad to your daily diet can be quickly counteracted with the addition of certain cooked ingredients, and commercially produced additives. Among the worst offenders are salad dressings, as they’re often loaded with high fructose corn syrup for flavor and processed trans fats to prolong shelf life. Low-fat dressings usually have increased sugar levels, with fructose added to compensate for the loss of flavor.
Make your own dressings instead, with a healthy oil, herbs and lemon or vinegar for a good condiment that will work with your salad, not against it.
After learning the numerous health benefits of salads, I'm having a tasty, refreshing and filling salad loaded with fruit and veggies for dinner tonight.

TRUTH BOMBS are described in the urban dictionary as surprising but true statements. A fact or piece of knowledge that, when told to a listener, is devastating to the listener's argument or world view.
New Yorker Seth Phillips has gained a cult following for his truth bombs that protest anything from loud engines, phones that shatter easily, “x” in espresso, and other very specific, small things that add up to our daily lives. He has a whopping 7.5 million followers on social media. Phillips has gone mainstream enough that the fast fashion giant Zara has capitalized on his popularity by selling "Dude With Sign" shirts in their summer collection.
And, of course, there’s always something new to protest. Such as, hot coffee in summer or verifying you’re not a robot online. The Council Chronicle will now feature these truth bombs in each edition. Those of us who have had enough of everything will get a chuckle out of this series.
Lisa Franklin Gray
Lisa Franklin Gray retired on August 31, 2022. Before she left us, I had a chance to chat with her about her time with Louisville Metro Government.
Q. What department did you begin your career with local government in?
A. "My first local government position was as a Deputy Clerk with the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office under Rebecca Jackson."
Q. What was your first job with the city?
A. "After ten years in local government, I accepted a position with the Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods. My previous positions had been with the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office and Commonwealth Attorney’s Office."
Q. What year did you begin working with Metro Government?
A. "My role with the Louisville Metro Department of Neighborhoods began in 2005. I was a part of a five-person team of neighborhood liaisons that were tasked with connecting neighborhood and business groups/associations with Metro services."
Q. What have you enjoyed most about working for Metro?
A. "I’ve most enjoyed learning about Open Records, further developing Community Outreach, Special Events, and the process and role of the local legislature. The thing I value most are the friendships and professional relationships that have been developed over the years. Some of these relationships are closer than family in many instances. I also enjoyed being able to share and pass on the vast knowledge and skill that I’ve gleaned throughout the years."
Q. What have you enjoyed least?
A. "Admittedly, what I’ve enjoyed least is not being able to perfect my poker face… quite frankly, I wear my feelings/thoughts on my face."
Lisa and her grandson, Zaire.
Q. If you could change anything about Metro Government, what would it be?
A. "Communication… it would be wonderful if departments understood what other departments’ role was in the grand scheme of things. If this were the case, citizens could be directed to the appropriate department. When citizens are transferred from department to department it only builds frustration and impatience. Each branch of Metro Government and every department would do a great service to its citizenry if it could definitively communicate with one another."
Q. What has been the funniest thing you've experienced doing your tenure with Metro?
A. "Connie Marshall and Daniel Cobble… enough said! LOL"
Q. What advice would you give to a new Metro Government employee?
A. "I would say to be detailed, document everything, and always check yourself. I would also advise the new employee to not be too hard on themselves because mistakes will happen, don’t take yourself too seriously, and do everything to the best of your ability with passion, enthusiasm, a smile, and professionalism."
Q. What have you learned about working for a government agency that surprised you most?
A. "The wheels of government are not as slow as many think… it just takes time to get things accomplished. The other thing is that there are many more people working on the public’s behalf than one might think."
Q. What are you going to miss the most about your job?
A. "What I will miss most about my job are my coworkers, colleagues, and many friends(family)! I plan on staying in touch because there is nothing like the bonds that have been created. These are people I’ve laughed with, cried with, disagreed with, and would fight to the depths with because they are near and dear to my heart."
Q. What are your plans for retirement?
A. "I mostly plan to spend time with my two-year old grandson, Zaire, start new endeavors, work on my house and to never let the grass grown under my feet which are adorned in five-inch heels!" 😉
Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
A. "I would like to once again say that I sincerely love and will miss each one of you dearly but know I’m only a phone call away. And, you never know, I may be back to visit soon!"
Lisa, thank you for being a tireless professional, a helpful coworker, and a good friend. Good luck in your new endeavors! We will miss you.

This series features a different note left on a car windshield by a passive-aggressive driver who couldn't walk away without expressing exactly how they feel. These notes are downright hilarious or outrageous.
I'm guessing this driver above doesn't care about tree canopies, global warming, the environment or sustainability.
