Hildegard House Volunteer Training

HH

Join the community of compassionate volunteers at Hildegard House. They provide a home and compassionate care for individuals at the end of life who have no home or loved ones to care for them. They allow them to die with dignity and access to hospice care. They are the family for their residents and care for them just like family members. Compassionate Companions commit to a weekly 5-hour shift. The next volunteer training is September 9 and 10. To learn more about volunteering and to register, visit www.hildegardhouse.org or call Volunteer Coordinator Jana McNally at (502) 581-8267.

Mill Creek Greenway Project

mill

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Natural Areas division invites community members from Southwest Louisville to participate in the creation of a conceptual master plan for the Mill Creek Greenway. This exciting project will transform about eight miles of Mill Creek and adjacent publicly-owned land between Sylvania Park in PRP and the power plant south of Valley Station. Thanks to a grant from The Nature Conservancy, landscape architects/planners will work with residents and other stakeholders on a plan to bring this waterway to life. The result will be a roadmap for a new public greenway for outdoor recreation. Given its scope, the project has the potential to be one of the nation’s largest urban stream mitigation efforts.

If you live in Southwest Louisville and would like to get involved, please click here and fill out the interest form found above the resources section. Or visit our table at the District Dialogue on Tuesday, August 23 at 6:00pm at the Southwest Government Center.

The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) has found mosquitos infected with West Nile virus in surveillance traps in seven Jefferson County ZIP codes: 40203, 40206, 40208, 40211, 40212, 40214 and 40215.

West Nile virus is endemic to Louisville, meaning it is regularly found in mosquito populations in Jefferson County. Residents should assume West Nile virus is present in all ZIP codes this time of year. No matter what ZIP code you live in, LMPHW advises you to take the following precautions:

  • Use insect repellents when you go outdoors. More information about insect repellents can be found here.
  • When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitos may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with a repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to your skin. Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing.
  • Take extra care during peak mosquito biting hours of early morning and dusk.

For more information about where we are fogging, call the Mosquito Fogging Hotline 502-574-6641.

Landbank Racial Equity Review

In 2020, the Landbank Authority began a racial equity review of its policies, programs, and procedures, and in 2022, the Authority’s board is considering the proposed changes resulting from that review and asking for community input.

The draft changes include prioritizing the sale of Landbank properties for owner occupancy, creating a $1 million Landbank Homeownership Improvement Fund to assist with the cost of rehabbing Landbank properties for properties going to an owner-occupant, revising scoring criteria for multiple programs to favor neighborhood residents and homeownership, and more.

The goal of the racial equity review and these changes is to improve upon their work to use Landbank properties to increase affordable housing in our city and homeownership and wealth-building for our Black residents by giving preference and priority to individuals and developers who plan to renovate structures or build new homes on vacant lots for owner occupancy and to residents who live near these properties.

The following link will direct you to the Landbank Authority page where the proposed changes can be viewed as well as the form to submit any thoughts on the proposed changes.

Pets of the Week

cat

Cat of the Week:

Did you know it’s free to adopt barn cats from Louisville Metro Animal Services? Also known as working cats, they prefer the solo lifestyle and aren’t ideal as inside pets to humans. Barn cats are great at keeping away vermin making them excellent pest control in places like barns, businesses, and warehouses. In exchange for food and a safe place to get a cat nap, barn cats get the job done. To meet or adopt a barn cat from LMAS, visit Animal House Adoption Center located at 3516 Newburg Road 12:00 to 6:00pm daily. To view more adoptable cats at LMAS, click here.

dog

Dog of the Week:

No need to ask Mother for money, because Mei's adoption fee is waived. Inside her kennel, the gorgeous 2-year-old German Shepherd mix is fearful and stressed by shelter life. But outside her kennel, Mei’s a friendly, sweet girl just waiting for someone to give her a chance and adopter her. Once timid Mei is comfortable with you, she lets you know with a quick lick and by jumping onto your lap. Adopt Mei for free, with an approved application, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Mei weighs about 46lbs. She's already spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. Dog and cat testing are offered by request during your visit. To meet or adopt Mei, visit Animal House (3516 Newburg Rd.), 12:00 to 6:00pm daily. To view more adoptable dogs at LMAS, click here.
