The 173^rd St. Joseph Children’s Home Picnic for the Kids is back, in person and at full capacity. This year’s event takes place on Friday, August 12 from 5 pm – 10 pm and Saturday, August 13 from Noon to Midnight. You can support St. Joe’s by playing carnival & casino games, enjoying the delicious food & drinks, and bidding on raffle items. The picnic is held on St. Joe’s campus at 2823 Frankfort Avenue, with free parking available onsite. Overflow parking with free shuttle service is also available on Saturday at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Parking Lot off Grinstead Drive. Friday night includes a live performance by The Crashers. There is live music on Saturday by Rearview Mirror.

Bingham Park is the latest stop in the Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s “Summer Series in the Park”. Designed in 1915, this small park, located off Coral Avenue and Brownsboro Road in Clifton, was originally known as Clifton Park.  In 1937, the park was renamed Bingham Park in honor of Robert Worth Bingham, a prominent local lawyer and former owner of the Courier-Journal. Like other smaller neighborhood parks, it accommodates an array of active recreational areas – a spray ground, playground and heavily used basketball courts.  It’s due for an upgrade with implementation of a master plan jointly funded by Louisville Metro and the Conservancy.  You can view the master plan here.

The Summer Series event, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Saturday, August 13, features free programming for youth, activities, food, drinks and various games for kids to enjoy while getting to know their neighbors.

The Conservancy’s vision is to make all Olmsted parks the most vibrant and inclusive parks in our community. This event series will help build relationships, increase positive activation in the parks and increase community impact. Join us on August 13!

CycLOUvia, Louisville’s annual open streets initiative, will transform a section of Frankfort Avenue into a paved park where people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can walk, bike, skate, or dance in spaces normally reserved for cars. The street will be closed to motorized traffic from Pope Street to Stilz Avenue, with an opening for cross traffic at Ewing Avenue, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, August 28.  

While promoting healthy lifestyles and alternative modes of transportation, CycLOUvia will create a vibrant economic opportunity for businesses. Commercial establishments with frontage along the corridor are encouraged to open their businesses and engage the sidewalk during the event.

We need your help to improve Clifton and Crescent Hill!

Last year, the Clifton Community Council and Crescent Hill Community Council expressed interest in updating their respective neighborhood plans. In a partnership with Louisville Forward, District 9 allocated $40,000 in Neighborhood Development Funds towards the total cost to update the plans. This spring, the Taylor Siefker Williams Design Group was selected as the consultant for the project. The Advisory Group held its first meeting a few weeks ago, and now is the time for community involvement!

The Clifton-Crescent Hill Area Plan is a community-guided process that will develop strategies to make short and long-term improvements for the Clifton and Crescent Hill community. Strategies will focus on ideas related to land use, transportation, and housing. PLEASE share your vision for the future of Clifton and Crescent Hill with an interactive mapping experience online at www.cliftoncrescenthillplan.com.

There are also separate surveys for each respective neighborhood. The consultants are trying to get targeted information for each neighborhood, but please feel free to complete them both.

Mark your calendars for a community workshop to share your ideas, give feedback about your neighborhood, help craft a community vision and define future priorities for Clifton and Crescent Hill. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday, August 13 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Bingham Park, in conjunction with Olmsted Parks Conservancy’s Summer Series event.

Because the West Nile virus is endemic to Louisville, it's regularly found in mosquito populations in Jefferson County, and residents should assume it is present in all neighborhoods this time of year, even if an alert has not been issued. An alert was issued recently when mosquitoes in surveillance traps in 40206 and six other zip codes in Jefferson County were found to be carrying the virus.

Louisville's health department has operated a mosquito control program for more than 60 years. In addition to West Nile, the department tests for Crosse, Eastern Equine and St. Louis Encephalitis.

In the spring, the department pre-treats potential mosquito breeding sites with larvicide to prevent hatch offs. In the summer, it treats catch basins, responds to complaints and performs fogging, when necessary, in response to West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne diseases.

Health officials now plan to conduct mosquito fogging this week near the areas of Irish Hill, Crescent Hill, Churchill Downs, the University of Louisville, Iroquois, Portland, Park Duvalle, and Old Louisville.  Fogging occurs between dusk and dawn. The extended enrollment deadline for Solar Over Louisville is rapidly approaching. The campaign gives households bulk-purchasing power to obtain discounted wholesale rates for solar installation.

Signing up before August 14 means –

• You are expressing interest in exploring solar by having your property pre-screened and receiving a custom remote quote through Solar Over Louisville. (There will be more time to consider the proposal and sign a contract).
• You secure the opportunity to access a 12-19%discount on going solar through this program.
• In addition, you will have the opportunity to access the 26% federal tax credit this year, which will likely reduce to 22% in 2023, and might be phased out the following year. 
• You are joining your neighbors in saving on energy costs, supporting local solar jobs, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and helping Louisville reach its 100% clean energy goals!

Please mark your calendars for Friday, August 5^th from 4-7pm. Metro Council’s Women's Caucus is supporting an event at Noble Funk Brewing, located at 922 S. 2nd Street, to raise money and clothing donations for Dress for Success Louisville.

Dress for Success is an amazing non-profit in our community that focuses on empowering women by giving them the tools and resources to achieve economic independence. Many of you might be familiar with their clothing programs, where they provide workplace attire for women with job interviews or women who have just secured employment. You might be less familiar with the other ways that they help women in the workplace, including through things like workshops on job skills, providing access to technology to job-hunt, networking opportunities, and more. It's a really great organization, serving lots of women living in poverty or near-poverty in every zip code of our city!

Please plan to attend and bring donations of clothing to the event. Clothing must be in good condition.

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. Through a partnership between the Department of Public Works, the Waste Management District, and Metro Council, these events are held monthly, March through November, at various locations.

The August event is scheduled for Saturday, August 27, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Eastern High School, 12400 Old Shelbyville Road.

Residents can have documents shredded, recycle electronics, tires, and scrap metal, dispose of prescription medication and bulky items, and compost yard debris. Items must be separated into those various categories for easy off-loading at each area. Limitations and guidelines are found at Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps. 

Future events will be announced and are posted on the Recycle Coach app calendar.

You can also recycle up to three electronic devices, up to four tires, and dispose of up to three large household items for free, year-round at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue.
