Louisville Zoo launches new Summer Happy Hour event

The Louisville Zoo is hosting a Summer Happy Hour on July 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for this after-hours 21+ event.

Happy hour guests will enjoy exclusive keeper talks and animal interactions in the Zoo’s Islands exhibit. The $35 ticket includes entry, appetizers, and two drink tickets redeemable for beer, wine or a specialty cocktail. Additional food and beverages will be available for purchase.

There are no refunds, rainchecks, or discounts offered for this special experience.

National Night Out - August 2

Plans are being made for National Night Out, the annual community event held across the nation. It's a police-community partnership effort that happens August 2 this year.  District 10 is served by Louisville Metro Police Department's 4th, 5th and 6th Divisions.  The 4th Division will team up with the 3rd Division Tuesday, August 2 at Iroquois Park from 5 to 8 p.m.  The 5th Division hosts NNO at the historic Peterson-Dumesnil House in Crescent Hill.  LMPD 6th & 7th Divisions will gather at the same time at Jefferson Mall, in the parking lot near the Outer Loop.  The event is FREE and open to the public. Three confirmed cases of monkeypox in Jefferson County - risk to the public remains low

Public health officials recently announced the first probable case of monkeypox in Kentucky in 2022 was identified in a Jefferson County resident. No further information about the patient will be released due to privacy concerns. The patient remains isolated, and health officials are working to identify anyone the patient may have had close contact with while infectious.

The risk of monkeypox to the general public is low. It is rarely fatal and there are treatments and vaccines available. If you are worried that you may have monkeypox or may have had close contact with someone recently infected with monkeypox, contact your healthcare provider. Here are the facts about monkeypox.

COVID in medium category

According to Dr. Jeff Howard, interim director of the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, wastewater testing shows that the omicron BA.5 variant is now the dominant strain of COVID-19 in Louisville. It is more infectious than the previous omicron variants. “COVID-19 vaccines continue to be the best tool to protect us from severe illness,” Dr. Howard said.  The CDC is also recommending that travelers wear a well-fitting mask in public transportation areas.

Report a Tick program continues

Earlier this year, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health & Wellness (LMPHW) launched its ‘Spot a Tick and Share’ program. The goal is for Jefferson County residents to bring in ticks we will identify as well as test for diseases. LMPHW will use the results to create a map of where ticks are reported and educate the public on potential diseases they may carry.

So far, about 50 tick samples have been submitted by residents and are waiting to be analyzed. However, some tick samples can't be used because they haven't been submitted correctly.

To submit a tick:

• place it in a small leak-proof container
• cover the tick with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer
• label the container with your name on it
• complete this form 

Drop off the sample to LMPHW at 400 E. Gray St. Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Complete one form per tick.

Solar Over Louisville extends deadline for enrollment

Based on the enthusiastic interest in Solar Over Louisville, the enrollment deadline for the program has been extended to Sunday, August 14. The campaign will give households bulk-purchasing power to obtain discounted wholesale rates for solar installation. Read more information and sign up here.

Buechel Bypass railroad overpass project contract awarded

Update on U.S. 31E (Buechel Bypass): As many of you are aware, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) closed the right lane on U.S. 31E over the Norfolk Southern Railroad (mile marker 10.4) after KYTC bridge engineers observed deterioration on one of the pier caps of the bridge during a routine inspection in 2021. This bridge carries an average of 29,000 vehicles per day. 

A contract has been awarded for the bridge repair, and the contractor is negotiating with the railroad before work begins. There is no completion date set for the project at this time. Motorists can use Bardstown Road as a detour.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Louisville Water Company water meter replacement continues 

From LWC: Louisville Water is in a three-year project to upgrade our water meters. In the coming weeks, our contractors and employees will do work in a portion of District 10 to replace older meters with new ones. 

The map above shows where LWC will be working and includes Barret Avenue, Bates Court, Baxter Avenue, Castlewood Avenue, Castlewood Dell, Dahlia Drive, Eastern Parkway, Ellison Avenue, Hawthorn Hill, Royal Avenue, and Summit Avenue. 

As part of our ongoing mission to provide the highest quality water and service, Louisville Water will upgrade the water meter at no cost to you. Meter upgrades will take place Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

We will knock on your door before work begins. Water will be turned off for a short period, usually less than 30 minutes. We will also leave a note on your door when we finish.

Louisville Water contractor, Grid One Solutions, will do most of the meter upgrades. Their vehicles will have an orange and black Grid One logo and Louisville Water contractor signs. All workers will have Grid One identification badges. Read more information on the project.

Empty the Shelters continues through July 31 with all free adoptions!

#EmptytheShelters returns to LMAS’ Animal House Adoption Center. In an effort to reduce shelter overcrowding, all adoptions are free during the Bissell Pet Foundation’s national adopt event through July 31. Every adoption includes spay-neuter, microchip, and vaccinations. Jefferson County residents will be required to purchase a one-year, renewable pet license, a requirement of the Louisville Animal Ordinance. Animal House, 3516 Newburg Road, is open noon to 6 p.m. daily and until 7 p.m. Fridays. Walk-ins are welcome.

July 15 - Louisville Zoo Cinema Safari presents "Christmas Vacation"

Santa’s Summer Safari series kicks off Friday July 15 with “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” (PG-13) and “Elf” (PG) on July 29. Cinema Safari is presented by Great Clips.

On July 23 and 24, the Zoo will host Santa’s Summer Safari Weekend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can meet Santa and enjoy fun games, activities, keeper talks and animal enrichment.

This special weekend event includes LIVE ice sculpture demonstrations at noon by Kentucky sculptor Matt Stoddart. A few of Stoddart’s designs will be given to the animals for icy enrichment. In addition, kids can enjoy special holiday-themed games and activities including the “elf fishin’ hole”, “build a snowman” obstacle course and more. Plus, there will be craft stations where children can create tissue paper suncatchers, pipe cleaner palm trees and other themed crafts (while supplies last). The Zoo is open daily year-round. Hours through September 18 are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (enjoy the Zoo until 6 p.m.)

Cultural Pass

The 2022 Cultural Pass is presented by the Fund for the Arts, in partnership with Metro Government, the Arts and Culture Alliance (ACA), and the Louisville Free Public Library. This free program supports and encourages summer learning by providing access to 57 of Kentuckiana’s arts and cultural institutions for children and young adults up to age 21 in Jefferson and Bullitt counties in Kentucky and Clark, Floyd, and Harrison counties in Indiana. The Cultural Pass is valid through September 4 and provides pass-holders exclusive access to activities both in-person and virtually. Learn more about Cultural Pass. 

Summer Reading

Presented by the Library Foundation, the Library’s annual Summer Reading Program is a free 10-week program that encourages kids and teens to read for fun over the summer by offering prizes and incentives. Every child—from infant through 12th grade—who completes the program will receive an LFPL adventure pack or journal. In addition, completers will receive passes to local attractions and sporting events like the Kentucky Science Center, Squire Boone Caverns, Louisville Bats, Racing Louisville FC, and select UofL sports, as well as sweet treats from Fazoli’s, Ehrler’s, Raising Cane’s, and Georgia’s Sweet Potato Pie Co. To complete the program, school-aged children simply read ten books, teens read six books, and preschool-aged children and younger need to read, or have read to them, 20 books.  Neighborhood Institute is a no-cost leadership education program designed to equip neighborhood leaders with the skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community. The application deadline for Neighborhood Institute Fall 2022 is 5 p.m. on Monday, August 8. Classes will begin on Tuesday, August 16 at 6 p.m. and continue every Tuesday until November 2.

Free summer tennis camps for youth 

The Louisville 10 and Under Tennis Association (Lou10U), in partnership with the United States Tennis Association of Kentucky (USTA KY), is offering free summer tennis camps to youth through its Let’s Get Competitive summer enrichment program. The camps will include an introduction to basic tennis techniques with six to eight hours of instruction by tennis professionals. In addition, Lou10U and USTA KY will hold tournaments for up to 64 middle school-aged players to compete in a stress-free, fun environment. Planting for the future - Apply for tree grants 

Louisville MSD Urban Reforestation Grants will pay for trees planted within MSD’s Drainage Service area including most of Jefferson County.  MSD’s Urban Reforestation Grant Program is open to residents, organizations, companies and agencies. The MSD Urban Reforestation Program plants 1,000 trees annually by working with residents, businesses, municipal organizations and neighborhood associations. These trees redirect an average of 1.35 million gallons of stormwater away from the sewer system every year, decreasing sewer overflows into our waterways. By planting more trees, MSD not only absorbs stormwater but also reduces erosion and flooding, provides shade, reduces noise pollution and carbon dioxide in the air, and provides a habitat for nearby wildlife.

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is accepting appointments for the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP. LIHWAP is a temporary emergency water/wastewater program intended to help low income households and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jefferson County residents meeting eligibility can call the automated scheduler at 991-8391 or schedule online.

Drops of Kindness Program - For customers who may still have an outstanding balance, Louisville Water has the Drops of Kindness Program, which offers flexible, no-interest payment plans and additional help from community agencies through the Louisville Water Foundation. Louisville Metro LG&E Assistance is available for eligible residents who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $35,000 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under the Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD, through July 31. For more information, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals.  Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. These LMPD divisions serve sections of District 10: Link to LMPD Fourth Division  Link to LMPD Fifth Division Link to LMPD Sixth Division LMPD working in District 10 have asked us to share this reminder: please call the LMPD non-emergency number, instead of sending an email, if you're seeing suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Sending emails to LMPD delays response, and officers need to be dispatched for the activity. These citations continue the nuisance abatement process. MetroSwap areas are here for your safety when buying or selling items

Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. From the Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program for the Air Pollution Control District: Take advantage of the Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program and save up to $100 on a new, air-friendly, electric-powered mower. You can get rebates on electric string trimmers, electric blowers, and reel mowers, too. Now is a great time to recycle that old, polluting equipment and save some cash on new gear that will make breathing a little easier for you and your community. Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
