A MESSAGE FROM NICOLE GEORGE: "IT'S GETTING HOT IN HERE" EDITION

It is officially summer and things are definitely heating up with sweltering temperatures outside, an exhaustive list of community events, and Metro’s budget process including the allocation of American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds. Last week, the Council approved recommendations for the 4^th installment of these federal dollars designed to support recovery from COVID. Included in the 4^th round was $79 million of investments dedicated to advancing healthy neighborhoods including but not limited to libraries, pools, childcare, and parks.  

ARP funding has been touted as creating transformational change in every community. While these investments are all worthy, what remains to be seen is any transformative impact in the Southend. The only ARP funding to date guaranteed to be directed to the Southend (from Shively to Okolona) is a $500,000 allocation devoted to the restoration of the tennis courts in Iroquois Park. While any investment is appreciated, questions should be raised about how this allocation for tennis restoration aligns with the overall needs of the park, whose voice drove decision making in the recommendation, and subsequent approval of the funds.

Whose voice was not heard in the decision making was the Friends of Iroquois Park group who met in April 2022 and identified a list of priorities. Topics covered included improvements needed to enhance safety and health (e.g. speeding, cameras, access management, operable bathrooms, and solutions for decreasing litter and illegal dumping). Friends of Iroquois determined that the tennis courts were not a priority... Nevertheless, restoration of the tennis courts was funded and the project's measure of success was listed in the proposal as being to “see park users playing tennis again on the courts.”  This goal is counter to the identified priority needs related to park safety and the longstanding use of futsal on the tennis courts.

To be clear, I am not opposed to restoration of the tennis courts. What concerns me is the lack of clarity in how this once in a lifetime transformational funding will impact the Southend and how community voice is factored into the one, single known allocation coming to the Southend via Iroquois Park.   

The good news is that there is not need to sweat. Thanks to neighbors supported by Olmsted Conservancy, there is a structure for organizing.

Below are 5 recommendations for staying cool and inspiring change!  

#1- Attend a Friends of Iroquois Park meeting. The next one is scheduled for June 28^th at 6pm at Iroquois Library and then again on July 25^th at 6:30pm at Colonial Gardens.  

#2- Support a more formalized structure for Friends of Iroquois Park meetings that include consistent meeting dates & times, neighbor driven facilitation, documentation, and follow-up.  

#3- As part of Friends of Iroquois Park, learn more about identified capital needs in Iroquois Park and work with Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation to establish priorities.

#4- Actively work to appreciate the existing positives in Iroquois Park and promote them, including Metro Parks Staff. 

#5- Take the Parks Alliance of Louisville "Parks for All" survey to inform uses: https://www.parksalliancelou.org/parks-for-all

We are excited to announce that Margaret’s Fine Consignment will be holding a pop-up shop at Iroquois Amphitheater on Saturday, July 2, to benefit next year’s Fund for the Arts South Louisville Art Crawl.

Margaret’s Fine Consignment, a Louisville staple for more than 30 years, will set up racks of clothes and accessories on the stage at Iroquois Amphitheater from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2nd. The proceeds will go to support the 2023 South Louisville Art Crawl, which was a huge success earlier this year.

Beechmont Neighborhood Association

Beechmont Summer Concert Series

After an exciting start in summer 2021, the Beechmont Neighborhood Association is excited to announce the return of the Beechmont Summer Concert Series.

Concerts will be held each Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m through July 8. The Concert Series is designed as a free, outdoor musical experience at the gazebo (corner of Southern Parkway and West Woodlawn Avenue) with artists/bands from the Louisville Federation of Musicians (Local 11-637). Attendees will enjoy live music, experience the beauty of the Olmstead Parkway, and spend time with neighbors.

A planning committee of neighbors has worked together to bring a variety of acts to this series. The lineup is as follows:
June 24 - Todd Hildreth Trio (Jazz)
July 1 - Donnie & The Thrillers (Rock)
July 8 - John Gage (Folk)

Beechmont Open Air Market

The market is set up every Saturday morning, at the corner of Southern Parkway and Wellington Ave., in the parking lot of the Beechmont Baptist Church. The market dates for 2022 are Saturdays from June 4, through September 24.
