Happy Juneteenth!

Yesterday was Juneteenth, a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, and to reflect on the racial justice work that we still need to do. I hope we will all take this opportunity to recommit ourselves to doing this work together.

For those of you who are less familiar with the holiday, Juneteenth became an official Louisville holiday in 2020, and a federal holiday in 2021. In 2022, Metro Council voted on an ordinance put forward by Councilwoman McCraney to make the Juneteenth Jubilee Commission--which will help plan Juneteenth related events--an official body of Metro government. 

Metro government offices are closed today in observance of the holiday. Happy Juneteenth!

Committee Recap: Lead Exposure and Louisville's Kids

I'm proud to be a sponsor of an ordinance to decrease the exposure Louisville kids have to lead. Lead exposure leads to permanent developmental disabilities, and over 10,000 Louisville kids have been lead poisoned since 2005. There's a lot of great information about lead in Louisville in this brief put out by the Center for Health Equity.

Last week, we had a special discussion in the Community Affairs committee to learn more about lead in Louisville. We were joined by Dr. Brian Guinn from UofL, and Mr. John Cullen of Lock up Lead. You can watch a video of that hearing at this link. The discussion begins around the 15 minute mark.

Women's Caucus Update: Disparities in Maternal and Child Health Outcomes

Earlier this month, the Women's Caucus released a webinar to talk about the racial disparities in child and maternal health outcomes in Louisville. 

Louisville has significant racial disparities in infant and maternal health outcomes. The maternal mortality rate for the city is more than two times higher for Black women than for white women.

Data from 2018 shows 42.1 Black women died per 100,000 live births, compared to 17.2 white women per 100,000 live births.

Similarly, Black infants die at a rate almost two times as high as white infants.

Data from 2018 shows 9.5 Black infants died per 1,000 live births, compared to 5.1 white infants per 1,000 live births.

Our city has folks working to address these horrifying disparities, and it was a real honor to get to have a conversation with them about their work, what Council can do to be supportive, and how the community can engage.
