George Johnson was the first and only African-American head golf pro in Kentucky. He began to learn the game at the age of 15 when he caddied at a segregated country club in Georgia. He turned pro in 1964 and qualified for the US Open in 1965. He received his tour card after successfully completing the PGA qualifying program (or graduating “Q” school) in 1968 and began playing in tournaments with the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Miller Barber, and Tom Kite. In 1971, he won the Azalea Open and became the fourth African-American to ever win a PGA tournament. George spent a total of 10 years on the PGA Tour and three on the Senior Tour and remained a Lifetime Member of the PGA. In 1997, George became the head golf pro at Bobby Nichols Golf Course here in Louisville Metro, which is now operated by the non-profit First Tee - Louisville.

June 11th & 12th, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day
On the second weekend of June each year, Louisville offers glimpses into one of its best-kept secrets. The Old Louisville Hidden Treasures Garden Tour welcomes garden lovers into the private green spaces of the nation’s largest Victorian residential neighborhood. Gardeners share their personal retreats, tucked behind stately Victorian mansions and protected by vine-covered walls and privacy fences.
In addition to the Garden Tour, guests are encouraged to visit the Conrad-Caldwell House Museum. Purchasing a discounted ticket at the Garden Tour allows customers to visit this Victorian mansion either the same weekend of the tour or any other date through the end of July that the museum is open. Also, attendees during the month of June can see a special display of an "Indoor Victorian Garden" showcasing plant varieties throughout the house that were typical of those found in the early 1900's.
Tickets are $25 day of, or $20 in advance. Tickets purchased online will be available at Will Call on the lawn of the Conrad Caldwell House Museum at 1402 St. James Court on tour days only.
