Dawson Hill Bank Stabilization Traffic Control Plan

The contractor plans to begin work on Dawson Hill Rd to stabilize the bank June 13, and expects the project to take a week. They will be limiting traffic to 1 lane during this time and may have some 15-20 minute delays when pouring concrete. Public Works has asked them to install signage or a message board next Tuesday or Wednesday in advance of work beginning to let traveling public know of the planned work.

Guardian Retention Systems (GRS) will maintain a single lane closure on the Dawson Hill rd. Bank stabilization project that is due to start on 13 June. GRS will do the following things to maintain traffic control:

• GRS will provide two flaggers, one at each end of the work site.
• GRS will Place traffic control signage at appropriate intervals prior to the work zone.
• Signs that will be used are road work ahead, expect long delays, be prepared to stop, one lane road ahead, and flagger ahead signs.
• GRS will use class 2 channel lining to fill in ditch adjacent to the work zone in order to allow enough room to push traffic thru the work zone.
• GRS will have to hold traffic for approx. 15-20 minutes while pumping out each concrete truck, then we will allow traffic to flow thru work zone.
• GRS will remove class 2 channel lining from ditch at completion of work, said material will be used to back fill behind the retaining wall when wall is complete.
• Work should take 1 week to complete.

BBB June 2022 Hot Topics

1. BBB has received multiple reports of job recruiter scams. Some scammers claim to represent legitimate companies. Avoid “recruiters” who ask you to download an app to do an interview and be wary of any interview where a job is offered instantly or where the recruiter asks for personal and bank account information upfront. Also, research the company first and check their website to see if they are actually hiring.
2. BBB continues to receive reports on Navis Worldwide, a scam company that advertises work-from-home package inspector jobs. This is a reshipping scam. Reshipping scams masquerade as work-from-home opportunities that involve the job applicant receiving, inspecting, and shipping out packages from their home address.
3. Consumers have reported receiving text messages that Indiana Workforce has sent them funds. The text messages contain a link, which has the potential to contain malware. Don’t click on it!
4. Consumers continue to report scam phone calls claiming to represent Amazon Customer Service. Amazon will not call you to verify charges to your account. If you receive a suspicious call, text, or message claiming to be from Amazon, go directly to Amazon.com to check the status of your account and to contact their customer support directly.
5. Consumers are receiving text messages promoting advance fee loans, and scammers are asking consumers to purchase gift cards from stores like Walgreens and Walmart in order to receive the loans. Do not agree to pay money or gift cards up front in order to receive a loan or grant; this is a scam and you will not receive any money in return.
6. A local consumer was offered a car wrap job opportunity. The consumer was advised they would receive a check in order to pay for their vehicle to be wrapped. This is a fake check scam. BBB is not aware of any legitimate job offers that send checks to applicants and ask them to send money to a third party.
7. A local consumer fell prey to a moving scam and lost several thousands of dollars in checks and possessions after hiring movers on Craigslist. Before hiring movers, research moving companies first on bbb.org. Get everything in writing, and keep an up-to-date inventory of your belongings.
8. BBB warns of scammers offering too-good-to-be-true deals on dental equipment like retainers and veneers. Research companies before you buy, pay with a credit card in case you need to dispute a charge, and avoid deals that seem too good to be true.
9. BBB warns of scammers hacking Facebook accounts and sending messages claiming the recipient is on a list of people who are owed workers’ compensation. The messages provide a name and number of an agent. If you receive a similar message, delete it (and notify your friend their Facebook account may have been hacked!).
10. BBB warns of online shopping scams related to the national baby formula shortage. Before buying formula online, check bbb.org for the company’s rating, use a credit card, and be especially cautious of ads on social media.

Zoo “Baby Boom” Continues with Birth of Lynx and Wallabies

Zoo “Baby Boom” Continues with Birth of Lynx and Wallabies

The Zoo’s spring “baby boom” continues with the birth of three Canada lynx kittens born on May 19, 2022 to mother Matilda and father Sitka. In addition, the Zoo recently welcomed four Bennett’s wallaby joeys. Three of the joeys can be seen peeking from or hopping in and out of their mothers’ pouches in the Australia zone.

Canada lynx Matilda will care for her kittens in a nest box during the first few weeks. Guests will be able to see the box and can expect to start seeing the kittens moving around the Americas’ exhibit in approximately 3– 4 weeks or near late June. The genders of the kittens won’t be known until after their first exam, which will be performed when they are closer to six weeks old to avoid disrupting the bonding process.

Because wallabies spend a significant amount of time during their first nine months concealed in their mom’s pouches, the wallaby joeys will be seen either in mom’s pouch or less frequently, in the yard. One male joey is being hand-reared off exhibit due to an early departure from mom’s pouch and need for additional care. The genders of the other three wallabies will be known once they have fully emerged from the “pouch life.”

The Wallaroo Walkabout hours may vary. Visit louisvillezoo.org/today for the latest information on times.

Follow the growth of these newest animal ambassadors at louisvillezoo.org/zoobabies. Presented by Norton Children’s, Zoo Babies spotlights recent births at the Zoo including harbor seal Emmy, our new zebra filly, and impending giraffe birth, and more. Zoo Babies reminds us that every animal birth is important and an opportunity to “better the bond between people and our planet.” To learn more about the program, visit louisvillezoo.org/zoobabies.

About Canada Lynx and Bennett’s Wallabies

Canada lynx are the most common and widespread feline in Canada. Compared to the bobcat, the lynx has longer legs and broader footpads for walking in deep snow. They are characterized by their ear tufts which are just as sensitive as whiskers, and the slightest breath of wind can be detected as a result. Females weigh between 18 and 24 lbs., with males slightly larger at 20 – 30 lbs.

Bennett’s, or red-necked, wallabies are named for their rusty red shoulders and upper backs. This kangaroo relative is found in east and southeast Australia and Tasmania. Small in stature, wallabies stand between 36 – 40 inches tall. They are herbivores and primarily feed on grasses, herbs, and roots, which provide additional water during droughts. Being marsupials, wallabies have a pouch and give birth to undeveloped young, called joeys, which can weigh only 2 grams at birth.

About the Louisville Zoo

Since 2011, under Mayor Fischer’s administration, the Louisville Zoo celebrated its 50th anniversary, opened nine new exhibits and attractions, and won national awards for Glacier Run and School at the Zoo. Considered Kentucky’s most popular not-for-profit paid attraction, the Zoo welcomed nearly 9 million guests in the last decade. In 2021, the Zoo was voted “Best Place to Take Kids in Summer,” by LEO Weekly, “Best Kid-Friendly Attraction” by Kentucky Living Magazine and Boo at the Zoo made the Top 10 Halloween Festivals list by thetravel.com. Community Access Memberships, deep-discount days, the Future Healers Got Zoo Buddies partnership and the accessible playground are among prime efforts to make Louisville Zoo even safer, more engaging, and more inclusive. Among the Louisville Zoo’s most successful conservation programs, the black-footed ferret breeding effort produced 1,100 kits and repatriated more than 800 of these most highly endangered, American mammals to the wild.

The Louisville Zoo, a non-profit organization and state Zoo of Kentucky, is dedicated to bettering the bond between people and our planet by providing excellent care for animals, a great experience for visitors, and leadership in scientific research and conservation education.
