Louisville Named Host City for Inaugural USL Summer Showcase
Multi-day event culminates with July 20 Louisville City FC vs Phoenix Rising FC match on ESPN2
TAMPA, FL (April 20, 2022) - The United Soccer League has awarded the inaugural USL Summer Showcase to Louisville, Ky., further establishing the Derby City as one of America’s great soccer destinations. The USL Summer Showcase is a multi-day celebration of soccer in the United States which will highlight the USL’s role in shaping its future at all levels of the game.
Soccer executives from around the United States will convene in Louisville for the event, which includes the League’s annual mid-year meetings, community events and partner activations, and culminates in a nationally televised marquee match between Louisville City FC and Phoenix Rising FC on Wednesday, July 20 at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2).
“The Summer Showcase will shine a spotlight on everything the USL is doing to drive the game forward in America,” USL Chief Commercial Officer Court Jeske said. “The passion of LouCity’s fans and the world-class facilities at Lynn Family Stadium make Louisville a natural and exciting host city for the inaugural event. Likewise, Phoenix Rising’s consistent success on and off the field helped us determine the ideal matchup for this year’s Showcase. We expect this to be the most-watched interconference match of the USL Championship regular season.”
Representatives from the USL’s ecosystem of more than 200 professional and pre-professional clubs across the country will attend the meetings and watch the match in Louisville.
“We’re honored to be selected for the inaugural showcase, and likewise we’re excited to bring yet another major soccer event to Louisville,” said LouCity’s chairman and CEO, John Neace. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our city to show itself off to the league and representatives of USL clubs from all over the country. We look forward to seeing visitors partake in local business and in turn hope the community helps us pack Lynn Family Stadium for a marquee nationally-televised game.”
“As Louisville Mayor, I was determined to do everything needed to bring professional soccer to our city. We resolved to transform a brownfield into something spectacular – and with the leadership of the great ownership group of Louisville Soccer Holdings, my team and countless others, our city has created a burgeoning soccer district with the state-of-the-art Lynn Family Stadium that has hosted teams from across the globe,” said Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer. “The USL Summer Showcase is a great event for Louisville, and will spotlight our city, Louisville City FC, and our soccer fans. Louisville’s soccer future promises an even greater social and economic impact, further strengthening our global position, and we look forward to being the host city for the inaugural USL Summer Showcase.”
Founded in 2014, Louisville City FC has established itself as one of the flagship clubs in the USL Championship. In 2020, the club opened its permanent home, with the 15,304-capacity Lynn Family Stadium earning nomination for Stadium of the Year by Stadium Database. The city’s love for soccer adds to a rich sporting landscape featuring the Kentucky Derby and deep college sports loyalties in the hometown of legendary boxer and human rights activist Muhammad Ali. Last November, Lynn Family Stadium played host to the 2021 NWSL Championship Game, and this summer the venue will host the second edition of The Women’s Cup, a six-team tournament featuring Racing Louisville FC and select international clubs. In December 2023, the NCAA Men’s College Cup will come to Louisville and another soccer champion will be crowned in Lynn Family Stadium.
"We're excited for the opportunity to host the inaugural USL Summer Showcase," said Greg Fante, Louisville Sports Commission Vice President of Sports Development. "Louisville is well-known for successfully hosting large prestigious sports events. Being able to add the USL Summer Showcase to this growing list of events is a direct result of Louisville Soccer Holding's investment in our men's and women's soccer community."
The Summer Showcase will bring together the USL Championship’s two winningest sides over the past five seasons and presents a rematch of the 2018 USL Championship Final, which Louisville won 1-0. LouCity has reached the Eastern Conference Final in every season of its existence, winning back-to-back USL Championship titles in 2017 and 2018. Phoenix has won the Western Conference twice in the last four years and leads the USL Championship in regular season wins (93), points (307) and goals scored (325) since the start of the 2017 season. LouCity ranks second in each of those three categories in the same time frame.
“We are honored and excited to be part of the inaugural USL Championship Summer Showcase,” said Phoenix Rising FC Governor Berke Bakay. “This will be our first match against Louisville since the 2018 USL Championship Final, so we are eager for the challenge. I couldn't imagine a better matchup for the first showcase. I expect the game will live up to the world class facilities in which it will be played and the national broadcast attention it will receive from ESPN2.”
Historic Iroquois Amphitheater Announces Full Slate of Performances for the 2022 Season
TicketMaster named new ticket provider
LOUISVILLE, KY (April 18, 2022) – Mayor Greg Fischer and Councilmembers today joined concert promoters, local business owners and members of the performing arts community to announce a full slate of live performances returning to the historic Iroquois Amphitheater this summer.
“This year’s line-up offers something exciting for the entire community,” said Mayor Greg Fischer. “We want this to be the best season yet at the Iroquois Amphitheater located in the vibrant south end of Louisville.”
The 2022 season will kick off on Tuesday, April 26, with a live concert from indie rock band, Modest Mouse. Others scheduled to perform at the Amphitheater include Ben Rector, Mark Wood from Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Martina McBride, RuPaul’s Drag Race and “Weird Al” Yankovic.
Four shows – My Morning Jacket, on June 24, and Billy Strings on July 22, 23, and 24 – are already sold out.
Those looking to attend the sold-out My Morning Jacket show should plan to enter the social media contest for a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Iroquois Amphitheater on June 24 and Waterfront Park on June 25. More information on how to enter can be found on the Iroquois Amphitheater’s Facebook page.
“There is always a lot of anticipation at the start of each season at the Iroquois Amphitheater,” District 15 Councilman Kevin Triplett said. “With so many new businesses and Colonial Gardens adding a new element to the whole experience last year when we came out of COVID, I think there’s more excitement about this season than ever before.”
The Amphitheater’s season also features live theater performances with ACT Louisville’s production of The Sound of Music which takes the stage July 15-18. Additionally, the Amphitheater welcomes TicketMaster as its new ticketing provider.
Metro Councilmembers Kevin Triplett, Rick Blackwell, Mark Fox, Cindi Fowler, Nicole George, Amy Holton-Stewart and Pat Mulvihill are sponsoring six free family movie nights throughout the summer at the Amphitheater beginning May 27.
Following the Amphitheater’s season, the 10th annual Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, the major fundraiser for Parks Alliance of Louisville, begins. The show will run this year from October 4-31. Weather permitting, the event will be held outdoors, or moved indoors allowing for social distancing.
Multiple vendors and activities will be available, including an opportunity to dispose of unwanted or expired prescription drugs properly and safely. “The past couple of years have been a challenging time for many Louisville citizens due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual Fan Fair is a simple reminder that even during a difficult time, a small action can make a large impact in someone’s life. I am excited to be a part of Fan Fair so that some of our most at-risk citizens can receive some much-needed relief,” said Alli Woosley with Louisville Metro OADC.
“It is always the goal of KIPDA, as the local Area on Aging and Independent Living, to bring visibility to issues that seniors and disabled citizens face. Cooling homes in the summer months is one of those issues. KIPDA is excited to be partnering with Louisville Metro Office of Aging & Disabled Citizens again this year, helping older adults and persons with disabilities stay comfortable during the summer months,” stated Brittney Baines, The Aging and Disability Resource Center Coordinator of the KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living. “I am proud of all of the community partners who come together to support this effort and help to make it happen.“

Louisville Vacant and Abandoned Property News
Have you ever thought about buying a vacant or abandoned property in Louisville?
The city has many vacant or abandoned lots and buildings for sale at all times. If you’re a contractor or fixer-upper, you might consider buying an abandoned home to rehab. Once you fix it up, you could live in it or sell it for a profit. Or you may want to buy a vacant lot or a property in need of demolition, and build a new home. Other properties are suitable for starting a community garden or other agricultural project.
To manage the sale of vacant or abandoned properties, the city has a program called The Landbank Authority. The program’s goal is to put these properties back into productive use. The Landbank currently has about 500 properties available for sale and some are available for as little as $1. But in order to purchase properties, you must be able to prove to the Landbank that you can pay to refurbish or demolish the property, and you must complete the project within a set deadline. To see what’s available, visit the Landbank website: https://louisvilleky.gov/government/community-development/purchase-vacant-property-landbank. You’ll see two links, one for Lots and one for Structures. Choose Lots to view empty lots for sale and an explanation of the types of programs, including “Adjacent Side Yard”; “Cut It, Keep It”; “New Construction”; and “Agricultural Projects”. Choose Structures to see a list of vacant houses and other buildings for sale. Landbank has two categories for the sale of structures: “Save the Structure” and “Demo for Deed”. To save a structure, you must prove you have funds to rehab it and you must complete renovations within six months for exterior and 18 months for interior renovations. To buy a "Demo for Deed," you must simply prove you have funds to demolish the property.
Both the Lots and Structures pages have links and instructions to apply for purchase when you’re ready. Speaking of funds, that’s where we come in. At LHOME, we can’t help you purchase a property but we can help you renovate one. Qualified property owners can borrow up to $30,000 for 12 months, paying only interest on the loan. After the year is up, you can sell your renovated property or refinance it.
To learn more, please visit lhomeky.org or give us a call at 502-882-8091. One last tip: The city has a great tool called Lojic (lojic.org). Lojic lets you search by address for a specific property you want to know more about. Just type the address in the search bar and you’ll get reports about the property owner, the assessed value, zoning, voting district and more. Happy hunting!

Contractors and businesses who are hauling debris are invited to use the Waste Reduction Center for the usual fee. See: Louisvilleky.gov/WRC
All yard waste set out for curbside collection in the Urban Services District must follow the regular guidelines: limbs must be less than 4 feet long and less than 2 inches in diameter. All material must be in a container or paper bag or tied into bundles weighing less than 60 lbs. See: Louisvilleky.gov/YardWaste
Hometown Hauling is asking their customers to call their office if they have extra trash or yard waste due to the storm. There may be additional fees for collection, but they are dealing with each customer on a case-by-case basis. Residents serviced by other private waste haulers are encouraged to contact their provider about storm debris removal procedures.
To report materials that have been illegally dumped or "junk" set out on the wrong day, use Metro311 or 574-5000.
If you WITNESSED A PERSON illegal dumping and have information (pictures, license plate #, etc.), please report it on our new online form.
Keep an eye out for the vehicles our Enforcement Team is currently looking for!
Don't contribute to the problem!
If you hire someone to dispose waste for you,ask to see their Waste Hauler License and do not pay without a disposal receipt. Properly disposing of truck loads of materials costs at least $50 - if you're charged less than that, be suspicious. Perpetrators will often take your money and illegally dump your items to avoid the disposal fee. Drop off up to three household items for free at the Waste Reduction Center. (Disposal fees may apply for additional items.)
Only set out junk or bulky items during your scheduled set out period. Residents in the Urban Services District can sign up for set out reminders using the Recycle Coach app. Residents outside of the Urban Services District should call their contracted waste hauler for information.
Tips to Prevent Illegal Dumping on your Property
Keep your property well lit and clear of overgrown trees and shrubs.
Monitor your property - the presence of illegally dumped materials or bulky items set out too early attracts additional dumping.
Install security cameras - send your video or photos anonymously to us and enforcement officers can use identifying information to catch the perpetrator.
Cover your loads! A lot of litter ends up on the highway because of waste not properly contained in trucks
Remove vehicle debris after an accident. When a wrecked vehicle is removed, the debris must be removed with it.
Report materials that have been illegally dumped or "junk" set out on the wrong day to Metro311 or call 311 or 574-5000.
If you WITNESSED A PERSON illegally dumping and have information (pictures, license plate #, etc.) report it on our online form.

9th annual How-To Festival returns to the Main Library
Saturday, May 14, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
LOUISVILLE, KY (April 18, 2022) – After a two-year hiatus, the Louisville Free Public Library’s annual How-To Festival is back for its ninth year! Taking place on the second Saturday in May, How-To is an annual tradition for thousands of Louisvillians looking for something entertaining, interactive, and educational to do after Derby is over.
While the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the cancelation of the festival the last two years, LFPL is excited to once again offer attendees the chance to learn how-to-do more than 50 different things in five hours, all for free. From learning how to be a circus performer to canning your own vegetables to making amazing cake sculptures, “how-to” sessions cover a range of skills taught by local experts.
This year’s festival includes a mix of past favorites—how to do Tai Chi, homebrew beer, or grow delicious tomatoes—along with new lessons, such as how to make and decorate tasty dog treats, perform modern dance, and create digital music. Other timely topics include how to plan a cross-country trip in an electric vehicle and how to buy and sell a home in a crazy market. And thanks to a partnership with the Louisville Urban Agriculture Coalition, How-Towill once again feature three gardening tents with classes presented by Urban Ag member groups, including Kentuckiana Beekeepers, Wild Ones, and Master Gardeners.
The How-To Festival takes place on Saturday, May 14, from10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 301 York Street. Sessions will be located in more than 15 areas throughout the building and surrounding grounds, transforming the entire library into a giant classroom. Food trucks will be onsite.
For more information, including the growing list of how-to sessions, visit LFPL.org/how-to. A complete schedule with times and locations will be finalized soon.

LMAS Asks for Tips in Search for Person(s) Responsible for Dumping 60+ Domesticated Rabbits in Beckley Creek Park
Public urged to contact LMPD’s anonymous tip line with information
LOUISVILLE, KY - (April 13, 2022) – Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is asking the public for help identifying the person(s) responsible for dumping more than 60 domesticated rabbits in Beckley Creek Park and encourages anyone with information to contact the Louisville Metro Police Department’s (LMPD) anonymous tip line at 574-LMPD.
“It’s important we find the person responsible because not only is it illegal to abandon pets in Jefferson County, domesticated rabbits cannot survive in the wild,” said Ashley Book, interim LMAS shelter director. “We don’t know how long the rabbit had been out there without proper shelter or food and sadly, we don’t expect all of them to survive.”
On Tuesday, April 12th, Animal Control responded to Beckley Creek Park where more than 60 rabbits had been abandoned. With the help of Parklands officials and members of the public, 49 rabbits were rescued and taken to the LMAS Shelter. Officers returned to the park on Wednesday to patrol for the remaining rabbits. LMAS will care for them during the stray hold period while it works to find placement with local rescue organizations.
“The shelter is not capable of caring for so many rabbits entering the shelter at once,” said Ashley Book, interim shelter director. “To help make their temporary stay as comfortable as possible, we’re asking the public for donations.”
LMAS is requesting donations of rabbit pellets and Timothy Hay, which can be dropped off at the LMAS Shelter, located at 3528 Newburg Road, Monday-Saturday from 12pm to 6pm.
At the start of his administration, Mayor Greg Fischer pledged to replace the city’s only open intake shelter, which had operated for decades as a high-kill shelter. Today, with the opening of a state-of-the-art Harshaw Family Foundation Animal Shelter in 2019 and Alley Cat Advocates headquarters in 2020, all the city’s animal-related services are located on one campus on Newburg Road, where residents can adopt a pet, purchase or renew a pet license or take a stray pet. In 2017, LMAS qualified as a No Kill Shelter for time and space for the first time, achieving a 92.8% live release rate for animals that entered the shelter. LMAS’ live release rate increased to 94.99% in 2021, and it continues its status as a No Kill Shelter for time and space.
