Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope everyone will find a way to enjoy what looks to be a beautiful weekend.

I want to talk a little today about civic involvement. Monday morning, I joined a couple of other council members to speak to members of the Louisville Welcome Academy, a leadership training program sponsored by the Metro Office for Globalization. The program’s mission is to prepare foreign-born leaders to empower and assist their communities. The following evening, I attended the second public meeting regarding the Berrytown Neighborhood Plan. As with the first meeting, there was a strong turnout from residents who provided lots of meaningful feedback to those helping draft the plan. Yesterday, several residents stayed until late in the evening to participate in a public hearing pertaining to our district. Finally, there were several new faces at our coffee meeting this morning. My point is that it is so encouraging to see people participating in government and getting involved in their community. Of course, there are only so many hours in a day. Some days, it’s difficult enough finding 15 minutes to sit down and catch your breath! Fortunately, there are a myriad of ways to get involved. While not an exhaustive list of course, options might include:

Serving on one of Louisville Metro’s boards/commissions

Signing up to receive metro government newsletters or following metro departments on social media so you’re aware of what’s happening with your local government

Volunteering with a non-profit like Eastern Area Community Ministries

Joining me and some of your neighbors at a district cleanup (more information below) and/or a coffee meeting

The larger point is that your participation, however limited it might be, is important and worthwhile. I really do appreciate the effort so many of you put into making Louisville great. As always, please let me know if my office can be of assistance in any way.

Shakespeare in the Park

Shakespeare

We had a beautiful day for last year's performance of Romeo and Juliet.

I wanted to give everybody one last reminder of Kentucky Shakespeare's performance of Julius Caesar happening this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Hounz Lane Park. Feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, food, etc. to this free, family-friendly event. Hounz Lane Park, as you can see from the picture above, is a great setting and it looks like odds are in our favor for a very nice evening. If inclement weather does move in, the performance will be held at Westport Road Baptist Church, 9705 Westport Road. Hope to see you Sunday!

Traffic Light at Westport Road and I-265

Construction is scheduled to begin soon on traffic signals along Westport Road to help motorists more efficiently access the I-265 southbound ramp. When completed, this project will provide those traveling westbound on Westport Road a protected turn onto the Gene Snyder Freeway. The foundations are expected to be poured by the end of the month, weather permitting. Following that, power will need to be provided, pavement markings will need to be added to the road, etc. The expectation is to have everything completed and the lights operational by June.
