New additions at the Louisville Zoo

The Louisville Zoo is celebrating several hatchings this month. Two Waldrapp ibis were hatched in late February. This species is considered one of the most endangered birds in the world. This is the first time the Zoo has celebrated Waldrapp ibis hatchings in four years. The Zoo has been a longtime member of the Waldrapp Ibis Species Survival Plan (SSP) with 18 ibis chicks being hatched since 1993. The recent pairings were also a part of this SSP breeding plan. There are only 23 Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) organizations that exhibit this species. They weigh about eight to 10 pounds and are 27 to 47 inches long.

Additionally, four Inca tern chicks have hatched. This is the first time Louisville Zoo has bred this species. The four chicks are from two different pairs of birds.  Inca terns’ status on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species is listed as near threatened with their population decreasing.  They are about 16 inches long.

Louisville parents have various free and low-cost options for keeping students active and engaged during this year’s Spring Break, which is April 4-8 for Jefferson County Public Schools.

The Louisville Free Public Library is offering more than 100 free programs for youth during spring break  

Looking for activities to keep kids and teens entertained during spring break that won’t break the bank? Check out the Louisville Free Public Library!

With more than 100 free programs, LFPL can help combat spring break boredom with fun and engaging programs for all ages. LFPL offers hands-on learning programs for children to play, create, and explore together, including musical storytimes with Louisville Orchestra ensembles, Kentucky Shakespeare’s two-actor “Much Ado About Nothing,” Mr. Moustache’s Magic Show, and STEAM Clubs at several locations.

Teenagers can participate in a variety of creative projects at branches around town, as well as just hang out and meet other teens in a safe space. Programs include open hours in our Maker Labs, several poetry workshops, classes on how to use a Glowforge laser cutter, and more.

The Library also offers kids and teens access to thousands of books, eBooks, graphic novels, blockbuster movies, and popular music – available free with a library card.

Parks and Recreation - Louisville Metro Parks and Recreation is offering camp programming during the first week of April at three Community Centers where kids can have fun and unique experiences with opportunities to discover new interests, participate in arts and crafts, explore the outdoors, meet new friends and learn different skills.

Community Centers offering weeklong spring break camps from April 4-8 are Beechmont (205 West Wellington Ave), Berrytown (1300 Heafer Road) and Southwick (3621 Southern Ave). Registration is underway now through March 25 and spots are limited, so those interested in participating should visit bestparksever.com to sign up as soon as possible.

Former UofL Basketball Player, Robbie Valentine, will be back at the Cyril Allgeier Community Center to host a three-day sports camp taking place April 4-6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Spots also are limited and those looking to participate may sign-up at bestparksever.com.

Hiking opportunities abound at Jefferson Memorial Forest, where more than 35 miles of trails await those looking to get away and enjoy a scenic outdoor opportunity just 15 minutes from downtown. For a listing of the city’s hiking trails, visit memorialforest.com.

Olmsted Parks Conservancy will be hosting two Free Play events where children are self-directed in interacting with the space, which includes a kid-friendly environment with play materials such as hay bales, cardboard boxes, tarps, rope and more. Free Play helps to develop communication skills, independence, problem solving, creativity, self-esteem, and more. Trained play facilitators will be present to encourage the children, while helping them distinguish healthy risk-taking versus actual dangerous play. Participation is limited to 20-30 kids at any given time. Free Play will take place April 6 from 1-5 p.m. in Cherokee Park (Baringer Hill playground at Alexander Road / Scenic Loop) and April 7 from 1-5 p.m. in Iroquois Park (Sunnyhill playground at the Kenwood Drive entrance near Rundill Road).

Families may also join archaeologists from the Kentucky Archaeological Survey at Riverside, the Farnsley-Moremen Landing for a free, behind-the-scenes archaeology tour, where they can learn to wash, identify, and study artifacts recently found during excavations at Riverside. Drop-in: 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Archaeology tour will take place at 11:30 a.m. (weather permitting). All children must remain accompanied by an adult. Call 502-935-6809 for more information.

In addition, families are encouraged to visit any of the city’s 120 parks, where amenities including basketball goals, tennis nets and playgrounds are available for families to enjoy.

Kentucky Science Center - The Kentucky Science Center is offering free memberships to families participating in SNAP/WIC benefits. The Community Access Membership offers a one-year family membership for two adults and up to four children ages 2-18. Applications can be submitted on-site at the Science Center or online by clicking here.

The Louisville Zoo - While the Louisville Zoo’s Spring Break Camp is nearing full, families should keep in mind that the Zoo is a living classroom and a perfect place to keep young minds active, while parents get in a little exercise. The best way for families to visit is by purchasing a membership, and the Zoo has many different packages, including a dual membership with the Kentucky Science Center. For those participating in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), the Zoo offers a Community Access Membership, which provides a deep discount for families. Additionally, The Louisville Zoo is accepting registration for summer camps offered to children ages 4 to 12. All summer camps are weeklong, full-day camps and feature small group sizes with unique nature-focused age-appropriate activities. Belle of Louisville Spend your Spring Break on the river with a $5 Harbor History cruise! Frazier History Museum Visit the Frazier History Museum for a fun-filled day of crafts, storytimes, kid-friendly tours, and special guests! During the month of March, the Frazier History Museum is celebrating those who broke barriers in their world to help others; from amazing inventor Garrett Morgan to the first Black woman doctor in Kentucky, Sara Fitzbutler. Louisville’s Senior Nutrition joins programs across the country in 50th Anniversary Celebration

This month, the Louisville Metro Senior Nutrition Program joins the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and senior nutrition service providers across the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the national Senior Nutrition Program. Locally, Louisville’s Senior Nutrition Program has been working since 1974 to provide nutritional meals for area seniors through the Meals on Wheels program and at senior congregate sites. March also coincides with the national March for Meals campaign – a time to share appreciation with the staff, volunteers, and agency representatives who make Senior Nutrition’s programs and services possible. This year’s celebration pays special tribute to the individuals and organizations who stepped up to help with increased demand and modified services during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the increased health risks of seniors during the height of COVID, and more older adults struggling with isolation, there was an increased demand for Senior Nutrition’s services. In response, Senior Nutrition and Meals on Wheels quickly shifted their services and strategies to help older adults stay healthy and able to continue living independently in their own homes. COVID-modified services included: Expanding meal delivery, with help from emergency pandemic relief funding Reworking home-delivered meal options and logistics Tapping local partnerships to help fill gaps, provide emergency meals Providing congregate meal services in alternative formats The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities, including packaging and serving meals at one of the congregate sites, and delivering meals to homebound clients. Part-time nutrition center supervisors are also needed to help with ordering meals and supplies, training volunteers and organizing activities for seniors. For more information about volunteer and/or paid positions, call 574-6420.  Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Seniors who would like to receive Meals on Wheels can call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. Cool Roof Incentive funds available

In order to combat urban heat island, Louisville Metro Government offers an incentive of $1 per square foot to any residential or non-residential property that has installed a certified Cool Roof within the last three years. Presently, there is more than $80,000 in funding remaining in these targeted districts for this fiscal year. LMG encourages property owners to apply and reap the benefits of long term energy and cost savings as well as reduced urban heat. Bids are being accepted in four separate areas of property maintenance: (1) Metro-owned properties, (2) Landbank-owned vacant property maintenance services, (3) Landbank-owned vacant property lawn maintenance, and (4) Landbank-owned vacant property debris removal. Buffalo Trail fundraising to bring sculpture to Preston Highway

At left, the St. Joseph Neighborhood Association raised the banner in the 2400 block of Preston Highway. For centuries, wildlife, including buffalo, migrated throughout Kentucky, pounding out the road we call Preston Street and Highway. Indigenous groups, explorers, and settlers relied on the compacted road as they ventured north and west.  The St. Joseph Neighborhood Association is fundraising to create and install an original buffalo sculpture in the median. The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax Aide programs provide trained, IRS-certified volunteers to offer free tax services online or at select drop-off sites. VITA is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2021.Individuals can visit getyourrefund.org  to have their taxes prepared online. Appointments being accepted for LIHWAP, the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is accepting appointments for the new Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP. LIHWAP is a temporary emergency water/wastewater program intended to help low income households and families during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Similar to the longstanding LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program), LIHWAP will assist Jefferson County households within 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, but with water and wastewater benefits instead of home energy.

LIHWAP will consist of two components: 1) the Crisis Component which provides assistance to eligible households experiencing a home water service crisis, and 2) the Subsidy Component which provides assistance to all eligible households regardless of the status of their water bill.

Homeowner Assistance Fund

In partnership with Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), Gov. Andy Beshear launched the Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund, a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure.

The program is funded through $85.4 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds that the commonwealth received to protect homeowners impacted by COVID-19.

Qualifying homeowners can visit TeamKYHAF.ky.gov to apply for up to $35,000 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. If approved, the funds will be paid as a grant directly to mortgage servicers, utility companies, county property tax administrators, insurance agencies or homeowners associations.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

From LWC: Louisville Water is in the early stages of a three-year project to upgrade our water meters. Dog of the Week: Rhoda Rhoda is not only easy on the eyes, she's easy going and gets along great with other dogs. Rhoda is an approximately two-year-old Black Mouth Cur/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. This happy, wiggly, and friendly girl’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. Rhoda weighs 62 pounds. District 10 events

Through April 26 - Mega Laser Zips

Louisville Mega Cavern is bringing the rave under Louisville with Mega Laser Zips! Visitors can zip through Mega Cavern surrounded by lights, lasers, music and more. Mega Laser Zips will feature six underground zip lines, including a dual racing zip and two challenge bridges that will test your skill, balance, and mettle. With each zip more exciting than the last, Mega Laser Zips will have a total of 18 lasers, a light tunnel, and more than 40 songs for visitors to zip along to under Louisville. 

Mega Laser Zips is the perfect group activity to ring in spring, through April 26. Visitors may purchase tickets online here. 

Wild Lights is back at the Louisville Zoo through June 5

The Louisville Zoo brings back one of the largest lantern festivals in the nation — Wild Lights—returning March 18 through June 5. Tickets are now on sale at louisvillezoo.org/wildlights. 

Wild Lights features a variety of animal lanterns, including mammals, birds, and insects, a 98-foot-long dragon, mythical Chinese creatures and promenade walk-throughs. Guests may also enjoy interactive photos opportunities like illuminated angel wings, color changing swings, a kaleidoscope, and many more.  

The 48-night immersive cultural experience that kicks off the Zoo’s 53rd season will also include unique handcrafted goods available for purchase, nightly cultural performances on the MetaZoo stage, and Asian-fusion cuisine.

The festival will be 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights from March 18 through June 5 and daily from April 4 to 8. 

Louisville Nature Center 

From the Louisville Nature Center: Forty years ago, the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve was dedicated. Since then, the amount of use has increased tremendously! LNC maintains this urban forest and trails, but we receive no regular funding to do so. If you have enjoyed hiking in our forest, would you be willing to donate to help with upkeep? Funds will go toward bridge and sign repair, trail and tree maintenance, and native species planting. Whether you donate $5 or $500, every little bit helps. Thank you for your support!

Upcoming LNC events include: 

Beginner Birding, Sunday, April 3, 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 9 to 11 a.m. Take your birding to the next level! On this guided hike, an experienced naturalist and birdwatcher, will help participants to identify some of Louisville’s beautiful birds. Participants will learn ID tips such as field marks, behavior, habitat, vocalizations and more. This is for all skill levels of birding, ages 12 and up. Binoculars recommended!

Spring Tree ID, Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. to noon, Take a walk in the woods and learn about the trees that shade the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve. Our naturalist Rosemary will teach you how to identify common tree species in Kentucky, looking at tree identifiers such as bark, buds, and leaves.

Wellness Soundwalk, Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m. to noon. The Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, known as forest bathing, is about being purposeful in nature and getting in tune with your surroundings; reviving a sensitivity to the environment that helped humans survive during their early history. Leave behind your phone, camera or any other distraction as Luke guides you through the forest, helping you tap into your senses. By focusing on soundscapes of the forest, you will improve your awareness of how environmental sounds can impact your daily life and your understanding of the world.

Submissions are now open for the inaugural Lawn Care for Cleaner Air Community Equipment Grant Program. The grant will award a package of professional-powered, electric lawn equipment to a local non-profit organization. The package of equipment is valued at $1,256 and includes an electric mower, trimmer, blower, and extra rechargeable battery that powers all three tools. The Grant is an extension of Air Pollution Control District’s Lawn Care for Cleaner Air program, which incentivizes the purchase and use of electric-powered lawn equipment in order to reduce air pollution from gas-powered engines.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. April 20 - Youth Performing Arts School to present #ENOUGH - Plays to End Gun Violence

The Youth Performing Arts School @ duPont Manual High is proud to announce its participation in the Nationwide Reading of #ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence on April 20 at 7 p.m.

YPAS will join more than 50 other communities around the United States to perform this year’s winning play selections and hold conversations with the audience about how gun violence affects our community. Tickets are “Pay-what-you-can'' and will be donated to the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods. Tickets are available at YPAS.ludus.com. 

#ENOUGH: Plays to End Gun Violence calls on teens to confront gun violence by creating new works of theatre that will spark critical conversations and meaningful action in communities across the country. This year, eight plays were selected by a committee of award-winning playwrights including Pulitzer Prize finalist Rajiv Joseph and Drama Critics Circle Award winner Lydia R. Diamond, as well as Manuel Oliver, whose son Joaquin was murdered in the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, FL. The plays, all written by high school students, address gun violence through a variety of lenses and experiences.

“These eight plays not only shed light on the complexity of the issue of gun violence, but they also reveal that gun violence is a symptom of much larger root issues, like racial and economic inequality, that our country has failed to deal with,” says Michael Cotey, #ENOUGH’s Artistic Producer. “Their perspectives are not only wise but bold, provocative, and vital to the urgent moment we find ourselves in.”

This year’s Nationwide Reading is scheduled to mark the twenty-third anniversary of the mass shooting at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. The cornerstone performance will be held at Lincoln Center in New York City.

“We are participating in #ENOUGH because one of our largest objectives in theatre education is to allow students to connect their art with citizenship. Theatre as civic engagement goes back to the Greeks. It’s theatre that matters,” said Katie Blackerby Weible, Chair of the Theatre Department at YPAS. “Also, we’re thrilled that one of the winning plays was written by one of our own.” Cameron Thiessing, a Manual MST student, wrote the winning play Undo, Redo that is included in the eight-play performance.

In addition to the staged reading, YPAS will host a post-show discussion that will be facilitated by Yvette DeLaGuardia. Several city officials have been invited. All are welcome to attend. Patrons are advised that the subject matter includes discussions - but not graphic depictions - of many forms of gun violence, including school shootings and officer-involved shootings.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood.
