COVID cases down, but 'we can't let our guard down,' Dr. Moyer says
For three weeks in a row COVID-19 cases have been declining. While this is very encouraging, we are heading into winter where people spend more time indoors at events and gatherings with family and friends.
“We can’t let our guard down,” said Dr. Sarah Moyer, director of the Department of Public Health and Wellness. “Did you know that CDC data show that in August 2021, the risk of dying from COVID-19 in the U.S. was more than 11 times greater for unvaccinated people compared to fully vaccinated people? The COVID vaccines work. They are extremely effective in protecting fully vaccinated people from catching and spreading the virus. If you are unvaccinated, please call our Lou Health Helpline today at 502-912-8598, and we can help you schedule an appointment at a location convenient to you.”
Here are the key COVID-19 data metrics for this week:
- Louisville remains in the red alert level with a daily incidence rate of 33.8 cases per 100,000.
- There were 1,813 new cases over the previous week.
- There were 16 additional deaths over the previous week.
-
Individuals 20 -44 are continuing to experience the highest number of cases followed by those who are 0 to 19. The lowest vaccination rates are also in individuals ages 20 to 44.
- Hospitalization data:
-
158 patients currently hospitalized have COVID-19.
-
43 patients in ICU with COVID-19.
-
30 COVID-19 patients on ventilators.
Vaccines
-
65% of Louisville residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
-
57% have completed the vaccine series.
Upcoming opportunities to get vaccinated against COVID-19
The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness has teamed up with the Kentucky Nurses Association, Park DuValle Community Health Centers and the Kentucky National Guard to provide community vaccination clinics.
The clinics provide individuals an opportunity to talk about the COVID-19 vaccines with a medical expert whether they wish to be vaccinated or not. No appointments necessary, and walk-ins are welcome. Translation services are available.
