Metro Council honors Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak as he retires

Walczak proclamations on retirement

Councilman Mulvihill and Metro Council members recognized retiring Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak yesterday evening at the Metro Council meeting.

In the photo at left, Councilman Anthony Piagentini, D19, John Walczak (center) and Councilman Mulvihill displayed a Council Proclamation and stoneware award honoring Walczak's service to the Zoo.

Walczak, who has described his nearly four decades at the Zoo as “a labor of love,” led the Zoo through many improvements and important programs.

The Islands, Gorilla Forest, and Glacier Run exhibits were each recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) for excellence and innovation.

The Zoo’s Black Footed Ferret Conservation Center is a leader in revitalizing an entire species. Under his leadership, the Zoo also welcomed the much-anticipated and important birth of male elephant calf Fitz; and the transport and care of wild-born, rescued polar bear, Qannik.

"John has worked tirelessly with so many friends, donors, staff and volunteers with a laser focus on success and growth," Councilman Mulvihill, a Zoo Foundation Board member, said. "He is dedicated to the Zoo’s mission to ‘better the bond between people and our planet,’ igniting people’s passion for animals and working to advance species conservation and education."

"It has been an honor to work alongside John, along with our community, and I wish him all the best in retirement."
