Work continues at Hauck's Handy Store

Speaking of Schnitzelburg, you may have seen in the news this week that renovations are underway at the former Hauck's Handy Store.  We're glad to hear that part of the plan for this new bar is to restore the neon signs and commemorate the store's long history. The store was established by the Hauck family in 1912. At left, renovations at Hauck's revealed vintage advertising along Hoertz Avenue, or George Hauck Way. This side street is the traditional site for the World Dainty Contest.

Saturday, September 18 is National Cleanup Day

Saturday, September 18 is National Cleanup Day, and everyone is encouraged to clean up their neighborhood or an area needing attention. This movement began with a couple of hikers who picked up trash along their favorite trails. You can register your efforts here.  As always, Brightside will provide bags, gloves and pickup for neighborhood cleanups of all sizes. COVID-19 case numbers remain in red alert status

With the city still firmly in the “red” alert status for COVID-19, the Mayor and Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness leaders on Tuesday again urged unvaccinated residents to bring their concerns about vaccines to their doctor or a pharmacist. The Mayor also moderated a discussion about steps workplaces should be taking to protect employees. Watch the briefing, and find vaccine and testing locations at louisvilleky.gov/covid19.

Metro Council seeks public input on FOP contract

Monday, September 20 at 4 p.m. is the next Metro Council Labor and Economic Development Committee public meeting. If you want to give input on the Fraternal Order of Police contract, registration opens September 19 at 3 p.m. and will be limited to the first 40 speakers who register on the Metro Council Clerk's website.  The public can speak in person at City Hall or virtually join via WebEx Events. District 10's own Louisville Nature Center is a privately funded non-profit organization that strives to teach people about the natural world and provide a place where people can enjoy nature—without even leaving the city.

Recycling reminder

From Public Works: The online free recycling cart request form has been closed. If you need a first recycling cart, contact Metro311. If you submitted the form after August 6 and before September 11, you should receive a cart. These deliveries have not yet begun, and the exact timeline is to be determined. Please note, not all form submissions qualified for the grant-funded recycling cart. We will continue to collect recycling from the small bins until January 1, 2022. Our goal is for each participating household to have a recycling cart (orange-lidded purchased previously or blue-lidded received recently) by this time. This goal depends greatly on cart inventory. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue this process. The new every other week recycling schedule is in effect. Keep up with the schedule by downloading the Recycle Coach app. Learn more about this recycling cart project at Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMore. Set reminders and allow notifications to hear from us if there are issues or delays in waste collections.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

Did you know that there is a monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish In partnership with Dare to Care? They currently distribute food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Kittens are BOGO  Adopt twice the love at Animal House, kitten adoptions are BOGO! Take home a pair and they’ll always have a playmate. Adopt any two kittens for a $100 donation which includes spay-neuter, microchip, and vaccinations. Dog of the Week: Maya Do you have room in your heart and home for sweet, senior shelter dog? Maya is waiting for a second chance forever home, where her experience as a loving, loyal pet will be appreciated. Maya’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. The approximately eight-year-old Labrador Retriever mix weighs about 78 pounds. Maya is already spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations.  If you would like to be certain Maya’s the one for you, she is eligible for foster-to-adopt. Maya is easygoing and friendly, but still gets excited at the thought of chasing cats, and so she needs a feline-free home. Dog testing is available by request. Behind-the-scenes Sloth Experience tickets on sale now

The much-anticipated Louisville Zoo behind-the-scenes sloth experience tickets are now on sale. Sloth fans won’t want to be sloth-like in their response as the Zoo expects slots to fill quickly. Sloth experience sessions are available at launch for bookings starting in February 2022.  Each sloth experience includes the opportunity to participate with Zoo staff in preparing the sloth's diet and visiting Sunni in her indoor exhibit. Guests will get to talk with keeper staff about the sloths, have the opportunity for a photo with Sunni, as well as receive a special keepsake from the experience. This experience is available Friday through Sunday afternoons, at 1:30 p.m. and lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Tickets to the sloth experience are $80 per person and can be purchased as an add-on option with a general admission ticket or purchased separately with a Zoo membership. Click here for more information and to purchase.

Dino Quest last day is Sunday, September 19  Dino Quest presented by Great Clips runs through Sept. 19 and invites guests to travel back 65 to 210 million years in time to visit 21 life-sized robotic dinosaurs. This exhibit is the world’s largest, most lifelike robotic dinosaur exhibit. Louisville Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (enjoy until 6 p.m.). "Boo at the Zoo" tickets are on sale

This year, the Louisville Zoo celebrates 40 years of merry – not scary – fun at its annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer. Get your tickets now for this Halloween event, which takes place October 1-3, 7-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30 (Thursday – Sunday nights, October 1-30). Children can dress up in their wildest costumes for the event that turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life, music, socially-distanced photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Registration for the Zoo’s annual Throo the Zoo 5K is open. The wildest 5K in town presented by Norton Audubon Hospital is set to occur at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 at the Louisville Zoo. Race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo.

One of Louisville’s most distinctive road events, the course takes participants “throo” the Zoo — past some of their favorite animals and exhibits. The start and finish lines are just outside the Zoo gate, but along the way, participants will be able to see animal ambassadors like bears, giraffes and sloths. The chip-timed course is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels, including guests with strollers.

Registration for this important Zoo fundraiser starts as low as $30 through September 30 and can be completed online at louisvillezoo.org/throo.

Louisville Grows is hiring

Louisville Grows is pleased to announce open positions starting in the fall of 2021. We are seeking field workers for positions to assist in our program areas. Founded in 2009, Louisville Grows is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in the Portland neighborhood with a mission to Grow Greener, Healthier Neighborhoods. Our programs focus on Urban Agriculture (promoting community gardens and supporting gardeners) and Urban Forestry (planting 1,000+ trees each year in the Louisville Metro area). Hours/Schedule/Pay: Full time, 40 hours per week, $15 per hour, W-2 employee. Health insurance and Flexible Spending Account eligible after 90 days. Weekly work schedules typically run from Monday through Saturday and are dictated by weather, volunteer events, and workload. Louisville Grows hosts many Saturday events and staff are expected to be available. Specific Responsibilities: Urban Forestry program: Much of the work for this position will be centered on the Urban Forestry program planting and watering trees during the summer months. The positions will be responsible for all aspects of field work related to this program including door to door canvassing, unloading trees, staging trees, delivering trees, planting trees, mulching and watering trees. This is very physical outdoor work continuing through the winter into spring. Urban Agriculture program: This position supports community gardens and the annual Seeds & Starts Sales. Work includes engaging with community garden grant recipients to provide requested needs such as building or expanding raised beds and other infrastructure (ex: hoop houses and irrigation systems), moving soil, mulch, and other supplies, planting fruit trees and berry bushes, and providing residents with technical assistance. Applications now open for Down Payment Assistance, Home Repair programs

City allocated additional $2 million for down payment assistance in FY 22 budget

Louisville Metro’s Office of Housing is now accepting applications for its Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs, all aim to help low- to moderate-income individuals access and retain homeownership and build generational wealth.

Households must be at or below 80 percent area median income (AMI) to be eligible for the Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs. That is $61,500 or less a year for a family of four.

Applications for both may be submitted at https://portal.neighborlysoftware.com/louisvilleky/participant, and paper copies are available at the Metro Development Center, 444 S. 5th Street. Those with questions about the application process and the programs can call the Office of Housing at 574-5850.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! Since nearly 70 percent of available planting space in Jefferson County is privately owned, planting a tree at home is one of the best and easiest ways you can help expand our community tree canopy and grow a greener, healthier neighborhood. To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Louisville Free Public Library hosting exhibit marking 20^th anniversary of September 11 attacks

Exhibit opens September 9 at the Main Library, 301 York Street

Following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers did something rather unexpected, they took photographs – lots of them. What began as a single photo hung in the window of a SoHo storefront became perhaps the most important crowdsourcing photo exhibition of our time. The resulting collection, here is new york: the september 11 photographs, returns to the Main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library to mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

The exhibition features 500 photographs taken the day of and in the aftermath of the September 11 attack, by professional photographers and amateurs alike. The images are presented without titles or commentary. The result is both a vivid reminder of the horror of that day, and a celebration of the human spirit and strong determination of New Yorkers and Americans in general.

September 18 - community opening of "West of Ninth" at the Frazier Museum

In partnership with "West of Ninth" bloggers Walt and Shae Smith, the West of Ninth: Race, Reckoning, & Reconciliation uses the blog as a jumping off point to explore the historic roots of Louisville's Ninth Street divide, delving into issues of race, segregation and redlining in the city. 

"West of Ninth" is a photography and personal narrative blog that features residents from within the nine neighborhoods that make up West Louisville. These narratives give residents and voice and strive to create a sense of understanding for those within and outside of the West Louisville community.

Neighborhoods in west Louisville have an estimated 5,000 vacant and abandoned properties and lots. Addressing this issue is critical for our community.

The Metropolitan Housing Coalition will be offering a bi-monthly forum focusing on vacant and abandoned properties in Louisville. This is a free, bi-monthly forum focused on finding solutions in Louisville presented by the Louisville Vacant Properties Campaign.

 Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
