Work will continue on the Watterson Expressway after the Kentucky State Fair concludes on Sunday. 

Starting Monday, lane closures are possible on the Watterson between mile marker 8 (near Dixie Highway) and mile marker 13 (I-65) for concrete repair. On weeknights (Monday through Thursday), lane closures are possible between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. On weekends, crews will be performing extensive concrete repair; lane closures are possible on Friday from 8 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.

August 31 - Benefit for the family of Brandon Shirley

Kentucky and Southern Indiana Bearno's Pizza locations will host a fundraiser Tuesday, August 31, and will donate 20 percent of all dine in, carry out and delivery sales directly to the family of Brandon Shirley. 

A Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy, Shirley was shot and killed while working an off-duty security job August 5.

Land purchased by Metro for pilot of Safe Outdoor Space for people experiencing homelessness

The city announced on Friday another step in its multipronged effort to help people experiencing homelessness — the purchase of property at 212 E. College Street for a pilot of a Safe Outdoor Space. The SOS will be a place where people experiencing homelessness can live temporarily, secure their belongings and access supportive wrap-around services. In the future, the property could become a site for affordable housing. Learn more.

COVID-19 status back in the "red zone" for Jefferson County

In Kentucky, an incidence rate of 25 or more COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people means a county is in the "critical or red zone." The majority of Kentucky counties are in the red zone. 

City leaders and medical professionals are urging residents who aren’t vaccinated against the virus to speak with a doctor or pharmacist about their concerns, and to seek out a shot as soon as possible. Vaccines are available at more than 100 locations through the city. Go to louisvilleky.gov/covid19 for more information.

Recycling cart update

From Public Works: The second round of recycling cart deliveries continues! If you have been waiting, we appreciate your patience. The new grant-funded carts are intended for households that did not already have a rolling recycling cart with wheels. If you already had a recycling cart and are experiencing overflow, consider purchasing an additional recycling cart or using a store-bought container that is 30-40 gallons, has handles, a lid, and is labeled RECYCLING. Only recycle what is accepted, crush containers, flatten cardboard, and recycle items loosely (not in bags).  The new every other week recycling schedule is in effect. Keep up with the schedule by downloading the Recycle Coach app. Learn more about this recycling cart project at Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMore. Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

Did you know that there is a monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish In partnership with Dare to Care? They currently distribute food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Due to Covid-19, guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Cat of the Week: Fannie Mae Fannie Mae is an affectionate girl who you will quickly fall in love with. The stunning white and black one-year-old is very vocal and loves to chat. Fannie Mae also likes to cuddle and receive affection although she’s not the clingy type. She has manners and knows not to claw up the furniture but will steal food, if given a chance. Fannie Mae spent time in foster and got along great with the resident dogs and cats, so she would do well in an only or multiple pet home. Fannie Mae’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. She weighs about seven pounds. August 28 - Back to Brew 2021 Join the Friends of the Louisville Zoo for Back to Brew 2021, a modified version of Brew at the Zoo and Wine Too!, an annual fundraiser benefiting the Louisville Zoo. The event format may look and feel different this year to accommodate continually evolving COVID-19 guidelines; however, the adventure and opportunities for everyone to have fun with friends and other Zoo-loving adults while supporting wildlife conservation will be as memorable as ever!  On Saturday, August 28 from 5 to 9:30 p.m., attendees will enjoy tastings from craft breweries and wineries, accompanied by local restaurant samples and live music. "Boo at the Zoo" tickets go on sale September 1

This year, the Louisville Zoo celebrates 40 years of merry – not scary – fun at its annual Halloween event, Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer. Tickets go on sale September 1 at 10 a.m. for the Halloween event that takes place October 1-3, 7-10, 14-17, 21-24 and 28-30 (Thursday – Sunday nights, October 1-30). Children can dress up in their wildest costumes for the event that turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life, music, socially-distanced photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Dino Quest continues through September 19  Dino Quest presented by Great Clips runs through Sept. 19 and invites guests to travel back 65 to 210 million years in time to visit 21 life-sized robotic dinosaurs. This exhibit is the world’s largest, most lifelike robotic dinosaur exhibit. Dino Don, Inc. makes the biggest and most accurate dinosaur robots in the world. Don Lessem advised Steven Spielberg on the original “Jurassic Park” film and for Universal and Disney theme parks. A children's book author, Lessem has also hosted NOVA documentaries and written documentaries for Discovery Channel. In addition to raising $3 million for dinosaur research, Lessem has excavated and assembled the largest dinosaurs in the world: the 110-foot-long, plant-eating Argentinosaurus and the 45-foot-long, meat-eating Giganotosaurus.  Louisville Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (enjoy until 6 p.m.) through September 19. Register now for November 13 - throo the zoo 5K

Registration for the Zoo’s annual Throo the Zoo 5K is open. The wildest 5K in town presented by Norton Audubon Hospital is set to occur at 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 13 at the Louisville Zoo. Race proceeds benefit the Louisville Zoo.

One of Louisville’s most distinctive road events, the course takes participants “throo” the Zoo — past some of their favorite animals and exhibits. The start and finish lines are just outside the Zoo gate, but along the way, participants will be able to see animal ambassadors like bears, giraffes and sloths. The chip-timed course is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels, including guests with strollers.

Registration for this important Zoo fundraiser starts as low as $30 through September 30 and can be completed online at louisvillezoo.org/throo. Registration on the morning of the race at the Zoo is $50. Drive-thru packet pick up will take place in the parking lot at the Zoo on Thursday, November 11 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Friday, November 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Louisville Zoo will hold a virtual costume contest. Race participants will be invited to take photos of themselves in costume at the race and share it on the Zoo’s Facebook page on the day of the race, November 13. The Zoo will share the submissions for voting starting on Monday, November 15.

Racers unable to attend the November 13 event, or who prefer to get their miles in at home, can register for the Zoo’s Throo the Zoo Virtual 5K race. The virtual race option allows guests an opportunity to complete the 5K distance on their own at a date, time and course of their choosing. Participants will be mailed a finisher medal and Zoo ticket for a future visit, allowing them to be part of the fun, no matter where they race.

Eviction Prevention Program update - federal eviction moratorium extension blocked by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of the United States has blocked the Biden administration's order extending the federal eviction moratorium to a large swath of the country, in a decision expected by both legal scholars and the White House.

The ban on evictions, a two-month order, was issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for parts of the United States that are experiencing what the CDC calls "substantial" and "high" spread of the coronavirus. The court's majority said the CDC exceeded its authority with the temporary ban.

City allocated additional $2 million for down payment assistance in FY 22 budget

Louisville Metro’s Office of Housing is now accepting applications for its Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs, all aim to help low- to moderate-income individuals access and retain homeownership and build generational wealth.

Households must be at or below 80 percent area median income (AMI) to be eligible for the Down Payment Assistance and Home Repair programs. That is $61,500 or less a year for a family of four.

Applications for both may be submitted at https://portal.neighborlysoftware.com/louisvilleky/participant, and paper copies are available at the Metro Development Center, 444 S. 5th Street. Those with questions about the application process and the programs can call the Office of Housing at 574-5850.

TreesLouisville's Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program continues

Thanks to a generous grant from the Louisville Metro Department of Parks & Recreation, TreesLouisville is excited to announce another round of its Residential Shade Tree Rebate Program! Since nearly 70 percent of available planting space in Jefferson County is privately owned, planting a tree at home is one of the best and easiest ways you can help expand our community tree canopy and grow a greener, healthier neighborhood. To participate, purchase and plant an eligible shade tree on your residential property and apply to receive $30 back on up to three trees. This program is open to residents of Jefferson County, KY on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been claimed. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Louisville Free Public Library to host exhibit, panel discussion marking 20^th anniversary of September 11 attacks

Exhibit opens September 9 at the Main Library, 301 York Street

Following the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, New Yorkers did something rather unexpected, they took photographs – lots of them. What began as a single photo hung in the window of a SoHo storefront became perhaps the most important crowdsourcing photo exhibition of our time. The resulting collection, here is new york: the september 11 photographs, returns to the Main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library to mark the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.

The exhibition features 500 photographs taken the day of and in the aftermath of the September 11 attack, by professional photographers and amateurs alike. The images are presented without titles or commentary. The result is both a vivid reminder of the horror of that day, and a celebration of the human spirit and strong determination of New Yorkers and Americans in general.

An opening reception and panel discussion, United We Stood: Memories of 9/11, will be held at the Main Library on September 9 at 6:30 p.m.  Moderator Melissa Swan and panelists Elizabeth Kramer (former employee in the Peace Corps’ New York office at the World Trade Center), Pete Longton (photojournalist who covered Ground Zero for WHAS-11), and Charles Traub (photographer/educator, co-founder of here is new york) will recall their first-hand experiences during and following the attacks.

The Louisville Public Library's collection of the here is new york photographs was a gift of Charles Traub and his family to the Library. Charles Traub was one of the original founding organizers of the exhibition in New York, and managed it with colleagues through the course of its exhibitions from 2001 to 2003. Mary Cadden Traub and Aaron Traub were part of a core group who maintained the organization's activities throughout those same years. The Traubs are natives of Louisville.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Or use the crime mapping iPhone app. If you see crime occurring, please contact the Louisville Metro Police Department. Call 911 for emergencies. Call 502-574-7111 for non-emergency related help or to find a towed vehicle. Call 574-LMPD to report crime tips. Are you looking for a public place to exchange items you've sold online? Do you share custody of a child and are looking for somewhere to exchange custody? The Louisville Metro Police Department is providing MetroSWAP Zones outside of some Division offices. There is 24 hour video surveillance. LMPD recommends: Agree to meet the person ONLY at a MetroSWAP station. Meet only during daylight hours. Tell someone you trust where you are meeting and at what time. Meet in the parking lot. There will be two designated parking spots at each location for use. Make this interaction brief and to the point. RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
