A MESSAGE FROM NICOLE GEORGE: TAKING ONE'S TURN

My introduction into the world of civic involvement started with the League of Women Voters. It was there I learned many important lessons which became foundational to my understanding of what is required for a healthy democracy. One such lesson, was the concept of taking one’s turn.

My turn on the Metro Council has been a tremendous honor and certainly the highlight of my career. In working with my neighbors, Metro partners, colleagues, and nonprofit partners we have been able to make positive gains in both the district and across our City in what was arguably one of more challenging times in recent history (e.g. budget shortfall, pandemic, and social justice reform). But with that in mind, it will be someone else’s turn to serve District 21 starting in 2023.

I feel a great sense of urgency in building on the progress made over the last 2 ½ years and want to continue applying the same focus and energy I brought to service for the remainder of my term, something that can only be accomplished with a definitive time frame for deliverables and absent the distraction of a campaign, therefore, I will not be running for a second term as District 21 Metro Councilwoman. 

In the upcoming months, I expect to see great interest from those considering service in this capacity. Service does not come with a handbook but over the course of the next few months, I will share my perspectives on the role and what work of the Council looks like beyond legislative changes often covered in the media.

This week’s starting point for perspective involves the fundamental time commitment made to serve. I have learned the needs and potential of District 21 require full-time effort rather than the part-time work. 

In addition to highlighting what Council life looks like, I will also spotlight the work of community members to inspire connections, solve problems, and create sustained change absent the myth that one elected official is responsible for and can fix everything. I remain more convinced than ever that these expectations often fostered during campaigns and perpetuated by politics stand to erode faith in the civic process and erode democracy.  

My decision to support democratic turn taking was made with great intention and not done to create room for service in another elected position in 2023. Let there be no doubt that over the next year and a half I will be spending all my energy, as I have since being elected, working with you to serve District 21 and advance Metro.

Wesley House's Backpack's and Vacs

The Pfizer vaccine has been made available to us for the Backpacks & Vacs event on Friday, August 6, 2021 from 4-7PM. This vaccine is available for youth age 12 years or older and adults.

Join Wesley House for Backpacks & Vacs! Let's stop the spread. Protect yourself and those that you care about by getting vaccinated. The Moderna-two dose vaccine will be administered. No appointment required but registration preferred. No insurance, IDs, or other information needed. This vaccine is for adults at least 18 years or older.

We will also give away backpacks full of school supplies, haircuts, shoes, and other items to support youth going back to school. First come, first serve while supplies last.

LIBA's Buy Local Fair

Parking is one of the ways we raise funds to continue our Buy Local/Keep Louisville Weird campaigns. Sorry, no animals (besides service animals) allowed. SWMS Recycling Cart Update

Solid Waste Management Services (SWMS) are currently working on the second round of recycling cart deliveries! If you’re still waiting, here’s what you need to know:

1. If you have not already filled out the Recycling Cart Request Form, do that as soon as possible.
2. If you HAVE filled out the form, please do not fill it out again.
3. As of July 22 SWMS is finishing up addresses with Monday recycling collection and working on addresses with Tuesday recycling collection. We have not started Wednesday route addresses. 
4. While you wait for your new cart, you may continue to use your old recycling bin(s) as well as additional container(s) or cardboard boxes for recycling overflow. You may also utilize one of our recycling drop-off dumpsters. 
5. SWMS appreciates your patience!

The new every other week recycling schedule began the week of July 19-23. It was the first week with no recycling collection. Keep up with the schedule by downloading the Recycle Coach app. Learn more about this recycling cart project at Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMore.

SATELLITE OFFICE HOURS IN THE CITY OF LYNNVIEW

We will be available the 3^rd Wednesday of each month at Lynnview City Hall (1241 Gilmore Ln. 40213) from 9am-3pm.

Note: The District 21 office uses this time to address issues in the area in addition to being at Lynnview City Hall. You may want to call ahead (502-966-4086) to make sure we will be in the office before you stop in.
