Weekly COVID-19 Update

Kentucky COVID-19 cases holding steady; Hopkins, Caldwell counties among worst outbreaks

Kentucky reported 1,051 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, staying mostly level with the total of 1,034 cases the week before.

Kentucky ranked 21st among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 4% from the week before, with 83,096 cases reported. With 1.34% of the country's population, Kentucky had 1.26% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 23 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Kentucky reported no cases or deaths the weekend of Juneteenth after reporting some the previous weekend. This will shift those cases and deaths into the following week, making week-to-week comparisons inaccurate.

Within Kentucky, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Pike, Hopkins and Caldwell counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Jefferson County, with 183 cases; Pike County, with 81 cases; and Hopkins County, with 60. Weekly case counts rose in 55 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Whitley, Pike and Hopkins counties. Read the full The Gleaner article by Mike Stucka USA TODAY NETWORK here
