The Louisville Metro Council has approved a $1.04 billion budget for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2022 that is focused on making Louisville more equitable, reimagining public safety and rebuilding the city’s economy post-COVID. Some budget highlights are:
- Quadruples investment in violence prevention
- Provides for up to $10 million for new West End Louisville Partnership; $10 million to Affordable Housing Trust Fund; $3 million in down payment assistance; and $3 million for Evolve502 promise scholarships
- Provides over $55 million for paving, sidewalk repairs and other infrastructure needs
- $6.5 million in housing and support services through the Office of Resilience and Community Services, including External Agency and Emergency Solutions Grant funds; around $1 million to house homeless people struggling with AIDS, and another $200,000 for Housing Connection funding to Neighborhood Place for helping people experiencing homelessness. That’s in addition to the $1.7 million directed toward Homeless and Housing Services as part of the midyear budget adjustment in January, and $11 million from the S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s HOME Investment Partnerships Program that the city will use to create more affordable housing options and services for people who are homeless or at risk.
- Also as part of this budget, the Louisville Free Public Library will stop collecting fines for overdue books and materials, citing information that shows young people and communities of color are hurt the most by the fines, left unable to utilize a critical resource.

This past Wednesday Councilman Triplett (seen above pictured with Louisville's own Carlos "RTG" Dixon, the WBC Junior Featherweight Champion) was joined by Mayor Fischer, Metro Parks, concert promoters, local business owners and members of the performing arts community to announce a return – at full capacity – to live performances at the historic Iroquois Amphitheater this summer.
They all agreed that today’s long-awaited announcement was evidence that our city is opening back up. The Amphitheater will reopen to full capacity, with a great slate of shows and events. It is exciting for the residents of south Louisville and the entire community.
The Metro plan to move yard waste collection in the Urban Services District to every other week has been scrapped. Yard waste will continue to be collected weekly!
Recycling collection will begin a bi-weekly schedule the week of July 12.
YARD WASTE COLLECTION DATE CHANGE: Effective immediately, yard waste collection for everyone who normally gets Friday service will occur on Saturdays. This is a temporary change due to constraints on current staff. We’ll let you know in the eNews or on social media if and when that changes.

*New COVID-19 cases and deaths in Louisville are at their lowest since last June, but infections continue to spread among the city’s unvaccinated population. Louisville public health officials shared the statistics in their first bi-weekly health update following the end of state COVID-19 restrictions. The 44.6% of residents who are fully vaccinated can return to pre-pandemic activities without having to don a mask, but those who aren’t need to continue to take precautions, said Dr. Sarah Moyer, director at the Louisville Metro Department of Health and Wellness. “If you are part of that 55% that is not vaccinated fully yet, please continue to wear your mask,” Moyer said.

While Metro Louisville’s Covid relief emergency assistance program for LG&E customers is coming to its conclusion, limited funds do remain. As a result, the Association of Community Ministries is temporarily reopening their online application portal and will process applications as long as funds allow.
Jefferson County households could be eligible for as much as $1,000 in aid if they have: 1) a past due amount on their LG&E bill as the result of an economic hardship related to Covid-19 2) those past due arrearages occurred between March 16, 2020 and March 31, 2021
In order to make completing the online application and signature capture process easier we have created a short video demonstration. We recommend viewing this before applying.
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is accepting applications through June 30, 2021, or until designated funds are depleted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment scheduler at 502/991-8391 or visit www.louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.
Applicants must be residents of Jefferson County with a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The benefit amount awarded is based on a household’s income and primary fuel type. Benefits are paid directly to the utility vendor (i.e. LG&E).
For the Subsidy Component, residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills; it is not necessary to have a past-due amount.
Currently all LIHEAP offices remain closed to walk-in clients in accordance with CDC guidelines, therefore applicants will be requested to drop off all required documentations in a secured drop box at the LIHEAP office selected using the appointment system.
Note: Residents who were served during the recent LIHEAP Crisis Phase may still apply during LIHEAP Subsidy if they meet program eligibility requirements.
