HAPPY JUNETEENTH

Dear Neighbor,

We hope you and your family are enjoying the summer weather and taking advantage of places that are safely re-opening. If you haven't gotten your COVID-19 vaccine yet, please consider doing so as soon as possible. You could even win $1 Million for doing so. There are numerous places ready to administer your free shot of hope - with little or no waiting.

This weekend we mark Juneteenth, our newest federal holiday. On June 19th 1865, Gen. Gordon Granger proclaimed (and began enforcing) the emancipation of slaves in Texas, the most remote of the confederate states. People there saw the news as cause for celebration, and to some that day is the true end of the American Civil War.

We hope you will take a moment to celebrate that march toward freedom with us.

Have a good weekend,

Brent Signature

June 17-20 | Juneteenth Jubilee

JUneteenth

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, a Union General rode into Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed.

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

Shot at a Million

Weekly Yard Waste Collection WILL CONTINUE

The Metro plan to move yard waste collection in the Urban Services District to every other week has been scrapped. Yard waste will continue to be collected weekly!

Recycling collection will begin a bi-weekly schedule the week of July 12.

Info on New Recycling Carts

Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. Through a partnership between the Department of Public Works, the Waste Management District, and Metro Council, these events are held monthly, March through November, at various locations.

The May event is scheduled for Saturday, May 22, from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Eastern High School, 12400 Old Shelbyville Road.

Residents can have documents shredded, recycle electronics, tires, and scrap metal, dispose of prescription medication and bulky items, and compost yard debris. Items must be separated into those various categories for easy off-loading at each area. Limitations and guidelines are found at Louisvilleky.gov/PopUps

The goal is to give all Jefferson County residents opportunities to dispose of unwanted items properly and to keep as much material out of the landfill as possible.

Future events will be announced and are posted on the Recycle Coach app calendar.

You can also recycle up to three electronic devices, up to four tires, and dispose of up to three large household items for free, year-round at the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue.

Watch this video to learn more about the Pop-Up Drop-Off events!

Households that currently recycle using an 18-gallon bin or their own container will receive a free 95-gallon recycling cart. Cart delivery begins June 1. (The new carts have blue lids, as a first step to move Louisville to the blue color associated with recycling in most of the country.)

If you had previously purchased a larger 95-gallon recycling cart with an orange lid, you will continue using that cart for bi-weekly recycling. If needed, you can supplement that with a store-bought container as long as it is 30-40 gallons, has handles, and has a lid. You can also purchase another 95-gallon cart.

Q: What will happen to the old 18-gallon recycling bins?

A: Residents are welcome to keep the bins for other household uses or additional storage. Otherwise, they can be dropped off at the following locations to be reused or recycled if not usable:

  • Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue
  • Full-Service Recycling Drop-Off Locations: 595 N Hubbards Lane, 7219 Dixie Highway, or 7201 Outer Loop

Q: How will I know when it’s a recycling week?

A: Every other week recycling will begin the week July 12. The best way is to keep up with the waste collection schedule is to use the Recycle Coach app.

Learn more about recycling in the USD and please see frequently asked questions and answers about the changes at this link.

YARD WASTE COLLECTION DATE CHANGE: Effective immediately, yard waste collection for everyone who normally gets Friday service will occur on Saturdays. This is a temporary change due to constraints on current staff. We’ll let you know in the eNews or on social media if and when that changes.

LIHEAP Now Open

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is now taking applications for an added Spring Subsidy program for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through June 30, 2021, or until designated funds are depleted.

Residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment scheduler at 502/991-8391 or visit www.louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.

Applicants must be residents of Jefferson County with a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. The benefit amount awarded is based on a household’s income and primary fuel type. Benefits are paid directly to the utility vendor, LG&E.

For the Subsidy Component, residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills; it is not necessary to have a past-due amount.

Currently, all LIHEAP offices remain closed to walk-in clients in accordance with CDC guidelines, therefore applicants will be requested to drop off all required documentation in a secured drop box at the LIHEAP office selected using the appointment system.

Note:  Residents who were served during the recent LIHEAP Crisis Phase may still apply during LIHEAP Subsidy if they meet program eligibility requirements.
