Metro Animal Services Adoptable Pets of the Week

Cat of the Week:

Oh, kitty – look what kitten season purred in! Kristoff and fur baby friends are ready for forever homes. Adopt any kitten or BOGO by making a $100 donation to the Pay It Forward program. Every adoption includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccinations. Kristoff is a super sweet, 3-month-old who is the purrfect cuddle buddy. To meet or adopt the recent foster graduate who is litter box trained, visit Animal House Adoption Center located at 3516 Newburg Road from 12-6pm daily. Walk-ins welcome! For more info about kitten adoptions, call 502-473PETS.

Dog of the Week:

Huey's been there, done that and now, he just wants to settle down with a nice family. The 5-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix gets along great with other dogs but thinks he’s far too mature for the antics of the younger adoptable dogs. Huey would love to have a fur sibling who’s laidback and enjoys frequent naps, just like him. Huey’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter. He weighs about 60 lbs. and he’s already neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. To meet or adopt Huey, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3516 Newburg Road) from 12-6pm daily. For more info about Huey,  email animalservicesadoption@louisvilleky.gov.

The Parklands 2021 Membership Drive

Membership Drive and 5K benefit annual operations of non-profit park system

Louisville, Ky. (June 8, 2021) —The 3rd annual Parklands 5K Walk & Run, presented by Enchanting Adventure Travels, is this Saturday, June 12, 2021 in Beckley Creek Park. The 3.1-mile course takes participants through a portion of the scenic Parklands of Floyds Fork, a nearly 4,000-acre donor and visitor-supported park system in Louisville, KY.

Participants can compete in person on June 12, or opt to participate virtually. Extra protocols are in place to ensure the safety of all participants. Each participant receives a T-shirt and race medal.

Timing of the 5K coincides with The Parklands Membership Drive, June 6-12. Funds raised from both the race and drive go directly to The Parklands Fund, the annual campaign that raises money to support maintenance and operations of The Parklands of Floyds Fork.

MEMBERS MAKE IT HAPPEN

As a visitor-supported public park, The Parklands does not receive tax dollars for annual operations and relies on community support to continue providing free access to its nearly 4,000 acres, 365 days a year. Members are the ones who make it all possible:

  • 3,825,891 park visits in 2020
  • 78,255 trees planted since opening first amenity
  • 17,295 Virtual Classroom participants in 2020
  • 60 acres treated for invasive species in 2020 so native plant species can thrive
  • 80 miles of trails for hiking, biking and paddling, including:
  • 22 miles of water trail with 7 paddling access points
  • 19 connected miles of the paved, fully-accessible Louisville Loop
  • 34 public restrooms maintained to a high standard
  • Nearly 4,000 acres permanently preserved

The Parklands experienced a 23% increase in visitation in 2020 compared to 2019 as people sought safe, outdoor spaces to recreate, relax and recharge. The record use shows no sign of slowing down. Parklands’ traffic counters show 2021 visitation at 1,353,318 through May 31.

Participate in The Parklands 5K Walk & Run, or donate any amount, and immediately become a Parklands Member and supporter of this well-used and well-loved community asset. In addition to helping maintain The Parklands for current and future generations, Parklands Members receive access to exclusive events, program discounts and Parklands’ swag.

The Parklands is debuting two perks during the 2021 Membership Drive. The first is a “Trees of The Parklands” guide featuring beautiful illustrations by Parklands’ Education Specialist Erin Kinnetz. The guide is available to supporters who give at the Parklands Partner level and above. Supporters who give at the Parklands Preserver level and above receive a unique, custom-made 8.5” x 11” print featuring a Chinkapin Oak, created by Graphic Designer Cassie Bays.

BBB Warns: Fraud Alert – Reshipping Employment Scam

BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky warns of a Louisville-area reshipping employment scam targeting individuals searching for work-from-home opportunities. Listings from an organization calling itself Century Post and claiming to be a logistics company have appeared on sites such as Indeed.com and Monster.com. The listings advertise work-from-home job positions that involve receiving and reshipping packages. Multiple individuals have reported to BBB that after accepting a position with Century Post, they have been required to submit paperwork containing personal information and have never received payment from the company.
In many cases, reshipping scams involve purchases made using stolen credit cards. Job applicants are often unaware that once accepting a “position,” they actually are assisting in reshipping stolen merchandise, and they will never receive a paycheck for their work. Additionally, there is the potential for job applicants to become victims of identity theft since they submit personal information such as social security numbers under the guise of completing new hire paperwork.
It is important to remember that there are no legitimate work opportunities that involve receiving packages and shipping them to a new address from your home. There are steps you can take to protect yourself from a reshipping employment scam:
• If you come across a reshipping job listing (also sometimes listed as “package handler” or “package inspector”), report the suspected scam to the United States Postal Inspection Service (www.uspis.gov) and to BBB’s Scam Tracker (https://www.bbb.org/scamtracker).
• If the job listing appears on a third-party employment site such as Indeed.com or Monster.com, report the listing as a scam to the site.
• Do not accept packages at your home address from people you do not know.
• Do not accept phone calls or respond to messages from people wanting you to reship their mail.
ABOUT BBB: For more than 100 years, the Better Business Bureau has been helping people find businesses, brands and charities they can trust. In 2020, people turned to BBB more than 220 million times for BBB Business Profiles on 6.2 million businesses and Charity Reports on 11,000 charities, all available for free at BBB.org. The International Association of Better Business Bureaus is the umbrella organization for the local, independent BBBs in the United States, Canada and Mexico. BBB Serving Louisville, Southern Indiana, and Western Kentucky was founded in 1916 and serves 44 counties in Kentucky and 8 counties in Southern Indiana.
