Covid-19 Information--Vaccines

Vaccine access is improving daily. We now have over 100 permanent sites across the community.  Plus, LMPHW and our healthcare partners have completed at least 150 missions with more scheduled in the weeks ahead.

If you are looking for a vaccine site go to Vaccines.gov  You can search by zip code, and vaccine type. The larger sites are still on our website.

The CDC approved the Pfizer vaccine for 12+. You may register for an appointment today at: Norton Children's | Pediatric care in Louisville, Ky. and Southern Indiana (nortonchildrens.com). You can also use the vaccines.gov site to search by Pfizer to find a provider.

Hike Route (PDF)
Paddle Route (PDF)

Thousands of cyclists, paddlers and walkers will be on the move again at the Mayor’s Hike, Bike & Paddle Monday, May 31 as it returns for a 17th consecutive Memorial Day at Waterfront Park. All portions of the event have been reworked to ensure participants will be socially distanced.

T-shirts will be available for the first 2,000 participants.

The event also provides an opportunity for participants to get vaccinated. LouVax’s Mobile Missions has played a key role in vaccinating tens of thousands of individuals across the Metro area and will be on hand to reach even more residents, said Dr. SarahBeth Hartlage, Associate Medical Director for the Louisville Department of Public Health and Wellness.

Appointments are not required and those wanting to receive the vaccine will only need to provide their name and date of birth. Proof of insurance is preferred, but not required in order to be vaccinated.

For hikers, this year features three routes, as the first option will travel along Waterfront Park to the Big Four Bridge and then back toward the Great Lawn. The second option is a 5K route traveling along Waterfront Park, over the Big Four Bridge to Indiana and back to the Great Lawn. The third option will accommodate hikers walking with their four-legged friends, traveling along Waterfront Park to the Louisville Community Boathouse to River Road and back to the Great Lawn.

The 15-mile bike route will take cyclists along Waterfront Park to Market Street past the new Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center. Cyclists will continue to Shawnee Park and back to the Great Lawn. Turnoffs will provide options for cycling routes as short as two miles on this closed-loop route secured by LMPD. There will be signage along the route.

Experienced cyclists will take off first at 9 a.m. The Louisville Bicycle Club and Scheller’s Fitness and Cycle are providing “bike captains” to help cyclists follow the rules of the road. The event will have rolling starts similar to Tour De Lou or the Derby Festival Mini Marathon.

“Bike doctors” will be stationed in Waterfront Park before the ride and along the route to assist cyclists with any equipment problems. Louisville Metro Police will provide traffic assistance at key intersections, and the Louisville Metro EMS bicycle team will patrol the route. All cyclists are asked to remain behind the lead police vehicles.

The paddling activity features a new route as participants will start at the Community Boat House, and willgo behind Tow Head Island, Waterfront Botanical Gardens and up Beargrass Creek.

Due to COVID, the event will not have Voyager Canoe rides or rentals from Harbor Lawn. Those features might be back for the Labor Day edition of Hike, Bike & Paddle.

New interactive hike, bike and paddle maps will be available online soon. In addition, there will be turn-by-turn directions and route information that can be used on the day of the event.

Starting at 8 a.m., the event will showcase demonstrations and group participation in Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba in socially distanced PODs on Waterfront’s South Great Lawn.

Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, as there will be no refill station this year, but Coca-Cola will provide bottled refreshments upon completion of hike or bike activity.

This is the 17th year for the Hike, Bike & Paddle events, which are held each Memorial Day and Labor Day. The events are part of the city’s Healthy Hometown Movement, created to encourage Louisville residents to be more active and make healthier lifestyle choices.

Louisville Parks and Recreation to Host Public Meeting About Jefferson Memorial Forest's Tom Wallace Recreation Area May 24

a

Under the Land and Water Conservation Fund Act of 1965 (Public Law 88-578), citizens are afforded the opportunity to express their views concerning the recreational needs of their community.  To provide a forum for discussion, Louisville Parks and Recreation will be hosting an open meeting on:

Date:  Monday, May 24, 2021

Time:  6-7 p.m.

Location:  Fairdale Village Green Gazebo

Address:  10005 Mitchell Hill Road, Fairdale, KY 40118

The specific purpose of this meeting is to discuss the proposed Phase I construction of planned improvements to the Tom Wallace Recreation Area at Jefferson Memorial Forest.  Phase I is focused on improving access within the park by creating a paved accessible trail from the front of the park to Tom Wallace Lake.  The project will also result in an improved and paved parking area closest to Mitchell Hill Road; expansion of an existing parking area near the Tom Wallace Lake spillway; complete renovation and expansion of the small picnic area overlooking the lake in the vicinity of the spillway; construction of an accessible trail along the entire length of the northern shore of the lake; replacement of the shelter nearest the western end of the lake; construction of a boardwalk across the western end of the lake, and also installation of amenities such as benches and a swing.

The public is invited to review the construction drawings for the project that are the result of previously public meetings and voice their opinion on the proposed activities and potential impacts of the project. Anyone wishing to support or oppose the proposed project can also submit written comments to Jefferson Memorial Forest, PO Box 456, Fairdale, KY 40118 or e-mail to forest@louisvilleky.gov by Friday, May 28.

Fan Fair-Get a Fan or Donate a Fan

s

KIPDA Area Agency on Aging and Independent Living and Louisville Metro Office for Aging & Disabled Citizens (OADC) are seeking monetary donations to help purchase box fans to be distributed to those in need as the weather gets warmer.  Starting in mid-June as part of the annual Fan Fair program, fans will be distributed to qualified individuals within the KIPDA region.

Qualifications to receive a free fan include:

  • Person 60 years or older
  • OR documentation verified by a physician of a physical disability
  • Must be a resident of Jefferson, Oldham, Henry, Shelby, Spencer, Trimble or Bullitt Counties
    • Proof of address and age will we required
  • One fan per household
  • Household must not have functioning central air units

Now in its sixth year, Fan Fair was first created in 2016 by staff members with KIPDA and OADC in response to numerous calls they received requesting heat relief. Many households lack air conditioning and individuals over the age of 60 and/or with disabilities are at an increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

Fans placed in or near windows can help draw in cool air from outside or pull warm air out of a room depending on how they are placed.

In keeping with CDC guidelines and in an effort to avoid large gatherings, this year’s fan giveaway will be spread out at multiple locations across several days.

Starting June 16, fans will be distributed at six Neighborhood Place sites, KIPDA's main office, and Tri-County and Multi-Purpose Community Action Agencies. Appointments are required in advance and fans will be distributed on a first come, first serve.

More information about how to make an appointment and instructions for fan pick-up will be posted on www.louisvilleky.gov/FanFair or www.KIPDA.org after June 1.

Seeking Donations
Those wishing to make a monetary donation to purchase fans can mail checks made payable to KIPDA, Attn:  Fan Fair program,  11520 Commonwealth Drive, Louisville, KY 40299 postmarked by June 5, 2021.  If you would like to make special arrangements for a donation or need further information, please contact Alli Woosley, Coordinator for Louisville Metro OADC at(502) 574-5092; or Jennifer Craig, Aging and Disability Resource Center Coordinator for KIPDA at (502) 266-5571.

Hope on the Greens; Program Uses Golf to Support Veterans

g

Many veterans find they miss the camaraderie of military life when they leave the service. Some also have physical or psychological challenges to overcome. A study by the Rand Corporation found nearly 20% of Iraq or Afghanistan veterans struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder or depression, and other research has found even higher rates among Vietnam veterans.
There is no single answer to dealing with the obstacles many veterans face, but for some Kentucky veterans, one innovative program provides comfort and connection in an unlikely place: The golf course.
