Gov. Beshear and Lexington’s NAACP Chapter Team Up to Address Vaccination Hesitancy

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 24, 2021) – With a commitment to provide equitable access to COVID-19 vaccinations across Kentucky, Gov. Andy Beshear is working with the Lexington chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Today at Shiloh Baptist Church, 10 members of the community voiced confidence in and rolled up their sleeves to receive the Moderna vaccine.

Gov. Beshear joined five local leaders to help overcome hesitancy and distrust.

“Thought leaders from many communities are stepping forward from all over the state, asking what they can do and how they can help,” said Gov. Beshear. “Today, prominent African-Americans in Lexington are speaking out. Their words of encouragement for receiving the shot help break down some of the barriers that can lead to vaccine inequity.”

“I was initially reluctant to take the vaccine because of historical reasons,” said the Rev. Jim Thurman, president of the NAACP Lexington-Fayette County Branch. “After much prayer, I saw the value of being vaccinated. COVID-19 was, and still is, hitting the African-American community and other communities of people of color, much harder. We need the vaccine.”

Rev. Thurman helped organize today’s event, assembling leaders such as State Rep. George Brown Jr., who noted, “I’m aware of the apprehension of Black and brown communities.” He added, “Based on the science, the vaccine appears to be the best defense available. I, therefore, encourage everyone to get vaccinated.”

While Blacks make up approximately 8.4% of Kentucky’s population, they account for about 4.6% of those who have been vaccinated so far.

The Beshear administration is committed to addressing vaccine hesitancy and equity that stems from programmatic, societal and historical causes.

“The COVID-19 virus has hit the African-American community especially hard,” said Sen. Reginald Thomas. “I appreciate the Governor being here to promote and stress the importance of being vaccinated. We must encourage all Kentuckians to do the same, which will lead to a safer and healthier community going forward.”

“We need to continue to listen to those holding us accountable and take action,” Gov. Beshear said. “We are not satisfied and we will continue to work to vaccinate every Kentuckian.”

JCBE sets date to vote on district's reopening plan

The Jefferson County Board of Education will hold a special meeting on Thursday, February 25.  February 23, 2021 - The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) will meet on Thursday, Feb. 25 to vote on Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio’s recommendation for a return to in-person classes for Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) students and staff. Board Chair Diane Porter announced the upcoming vote during a special meeting of the board that was held tonight. Also during the meeting, board members had the opportunity to pose questions to local health officials about the new Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance and other health-related issues. They spoke with Dr. Sarah Moyer, chief health strategist, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness; Dr. Mark Burns, assistant professor of medicine, infectious diseases, University of Louisville; Dr. Jason Smith, chief medical officer for University of Louisville Health; and Dr. Monalisa Tailor, internal medicine, Norton HealthCare. Louisville Xtreme Professional Indoor Football Team to Play at KFC Yum! Center

Louisville, KY (February 22, 2021) –  The KFC Yum! Center and Indoor Football League's (IFL) Louisville Xtreme Football team announced partnership details at a press conference this morning. The three-year rental lease agreement between Louisville Xtreme and the venue's operator, ASM Global, includes eight home games at the KFC Yum! Center between April and August 2021. 

"We are elated to be playing in the KFC Yum! Center," Louisville Xtreme Football General Manager Victor Cole said. "The KFC Yum! Center will not only give our fans the best possible indoor football experience, but also the safest way to watch games in person with their highly effective VenueShield program." 

For the safety of KFC Yum! Center and team employees and guests, capacity will be limited at each game and ASM Global staff have implemented VenueShield, an exclusive, globally recognized program developed in partnership with leading medical professionals and industry experts that provides enhanced safety protocols. These include increased disinfectant cleaning, temperature screenings, mandatory face coverings, physical distancing, hand sanitizer stations and more. 

"We are so pleased that Louisville Xtreme Football team will call the KFC Yum! Center home," ASM Global General Manager Eric Granger said. "ASM Global is committed to bringing new entertainment options for the Louisville region, and the Louisville Xtreme is dedicated to providing fun and engaging experiences for fans. The Indoor Football League is America’s longest continuously-running indoor football league and begins its 13th consecutive season of play in 2021. The IFL began play in 2009 following a merger between the United Indoor Football League and the Intense Football League. IFL teams will play a 16-game schedule in 2021 with each team having eight home games and eight road games. The regular season runs from April through August, with playoffs running throughout August.

Dog of the week: Taylor’s nickname should be ‘Ms. Congeniality’ because she’s such a friendly dog. The approximately 5-year-old Pit Bull mix gets along great with people. Maybe it’s because she loves attention. Taylor’s a sweet, playful and affectionate dog who won’t turn a down a stroll on a cold, snow day. She walks well on-leash and enjoys bird watching. Her adorable ears perk up at the sound of critters in the park. Taylor’s a good co-pilot and well-behaved during shopping trips. At home, her favorite spot is on top of a nice, cozy bed - but she prefers the kind where humans sleep! Taylor’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter. Taylor’s already spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. She weighs about 60lbs. Taylor is extremely dog friendly and a great playmate to other shelter dogs.
