Dr. SaraBeth Hartlage of Health and Wellness reported that 12,000 vaccinations had been given at Broadbent Arena so far, with 40,000 vaccinations given through the healthcare partners.

LMPHW is recruiting both non-medical and medical volunteers. Non-medical community volunteers will assist with scheduling and confirming appointments, collecting documents, temperature checks, and restocking supplies. Medically trained volunteers (specialized training and licensing required) will assist with administering the vaccine, medical screening, and triage. Yard waste collection by request only now through April 5

Every winter, yard waste collection in the Urban Services District is done by request only. To make a request:  Call Metro311 at 311 or 574-5000 or email metro.311@louisvilleky.gov.  Provide your first and last name, address, phone number, set out location (front, rear, side, alley, etc.), and approximate number of containers, bags, or bundles. Your appointment will be scheduled on your regular collection day the following week. (Example: If your regular yard waste collection day is Thursday, and your request is made on Monday, February 8, your yard waste will not be collected until Thursday, February 18.)  Set out yard waste no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before your appointment and no later than 6 a.m. the day of your appointment, and follow the collection guidelines. Regular weekly yard waste collection without requests will resume the week of April 5.

Christmas tree composting available through January 30

Christmas tree drop off continues through Saturday, January 30.  The Hubbards Lane site is also instantly recycling Christmas trees into mulch that is offered back to citizens for home use. Those wishing to receive mulch must bring an appropriate container in which to carry it.  All lights and ornaments should be removed from trees before they are dropped off or set out for collection.  Now through January 30, Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Waste Reduction Center closes at 3 p.m. on Saturdays)  East District Recycling Center, 595 N. Hubbards Lane Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane) Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue  Metro Public Works will also provide curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District (the old City of Louisville boundaries) after the holiday, but by request only per the winter schedule. Trees must not be in plastic bags, and all decorations must be removed.  Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see whether and when tree pickup is available.

Dog of the week: Canary Did you know that it’s always free for approved adopters to adopt a Pit Bull from LMAS? If you love the breed, adopt, don’t shop.  Canary would be a great wing man because he has a friendly, happy personality. The one-year-old got his name because he sounds like a bird, when he whines for attention - and he loves attention! Canary would make an excellent companion for someone who’s active. He loves to play and would benefit from daily walks or running around the back yard. Canary’s adoption fee is waived thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. He’s already neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Canary weighs about 48 pounds. He would do best in a home with adults or teenagers but can also be tested with other dogs and cats by request. To meet or adopt Canary, visit Animal House Adoption Center, 3516 Newburg Road, open from noon to 6 p.m. daily, no appointment required. Kentucky RISE (Resources for Independence Success and Empowerment) has established a program with Walmart for current and former foster youth to potentially work at their stores throughout the state. The program will include on-the-job mentors employed by Walmart to help support the youth. 

All potential candidates will need to go to kyrise.ky.gov to register for the hiring event. Candidates will need to have a state ID or driver's license for the initial interview. 

Best of The Magic and the Wonder available for online viewing

While the in-person 13th Annual The Magic & The Wonder was cancelled, the show will go on through special “best of” video episodes featuring clips of past performers. Crisis Component of LIHEAP provides utility assistance for Louisville residents

Automated appointment line now open to schedule appointments in advance

The program that helps prevent low income residents of Jefferson County from being disconnected from utility services  The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. The LIHEAP Crisis Component will run through March 31, or until available funds have been expended, whichever comes first. This year’s Crisis Program will allow residents receiving a current utility bill with a past due amount and residents receiving a disconnect notice to apply for assistance. To apply, residents must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system, by phone at 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Applicants must be a resident of Jefferson County with a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $3,275.00).  Applicants must also meet one of the following eligibility requirements: Received a disconnect notice from LG&E, or Received a current bill with a past due amount, or Have a current payment plan with LG&E due to a past-due balance, or  Received an eviction notice if utilities are included in the rent, or Be within four days of running out of bulk fuel; or Be within ten days of running out of pre-paid electric service. Applicants must provide copies of the following documents. Proof of all household income for the preceding month (Food Stamp award letter, Social Security Award letter, pay stubs, or proof of $0 income). Note: Zero Income forms are available at the LIHEAP Drop Box locations or by clicking here. Social Security card(s) or (official documentation with Social Security Numbers) or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household; and Disconnect notice or a current bill with a past due amount for metered utilities; or Eviction notice and copy of lease if heating expenses are included in the rent. or  Statement from utility company that shows 10 days or less of service if participating in pre-paid electric service. Family Profile Form and Remote Processing Form can be downloaded at louisvilleky.gov/LIHEAP or found at the LIHEAP office Drop boxes.  Individuals who are unable to apply for this program own their own may send an authorized representative to drop off required documentation their behalf with a note including the applicant’s name, address, phone number, and the name of the designated representative. Residents who are homebound and who are unable to designate a representative to drop off documenation on their behalf may call 780-7937. Copies of LIHEAP documentation, along with the downloadable Family Profile form and the Remote Processing form, should be dropped off at the LIHEAP site you select, on the day of your appointment. Applicants will then be contacted by LIHEAP staff within 72 hours (three business days) of the appointment time. Louisville Metro Government offers a free Financial Navigators program to help residents navigate critical financial issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents can access these free, remote services by completing the online form here or calling 657-6624 to sign up. Low-income households may qualify for a ten-percent sewer bill discount under a new Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program (EWRAP) offered by MSD. For more information, click here, call 540-6000 or email.

Senior citizens age 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less and are both Louisville Water Company and MSD customers may request an application for a 30 percent discount on wastewater charges and the EPA Consent Decree Surcharge through MSD's website or by calling Customer Relations at 540-6000.

The Louisville Water Foundation works with community agencies to help customers keep their water turned on. Drops of Kindness offers residential and business customers help with resolving unpaid bills and reducing future financial obligations. If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. In the Urban Services District, this equals $527 cash in your pocket annually and, once approved, you are not required to reapply unless you move. Complete this one-page form and mail it, along with a copy of your driver’s license (or ID), to the PVA. You’ll get a letter back that looks like this. You'll be notified by a postcard if you qualify. More information is here. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

A new interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. Get your reduced cost recycling cart before funds are depleted

Councilman Mulvihill is committed to providing carts to District 10 residents at a reduced cost. These recycle carts will be available on a first come first served basis until the funds are depleted.  The photos at left show the sizes: 64 gallon on the left, 95 gallon on the right.

The carts normally cost $53, but Councilman Mulvihill has made them available for residents of District 10 for a reduced cost of $28. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents.

What's the difference between a Recycling Bin and Recycling Cart? The District 10 Discount Cart Program only includes Recycling Carts in 65- or 95-gallon size. Please call 574-1110 or email us for the form. This offer is available to urban service district residents. Households with city waste services receive one garbage cart (all black) and one 18-gallon orange recycling bin for free. If you have just moved into a residence and either of these are missing, contact Metro311 online or call 311 or 574-5000 to make a request.

RecycleCoach app helps Louisville Metro customers with collection reminders, recycling information and more

Receive notifications about garbage, recycling, bulk waste, and yard waste collection services through the RecycleCoach app.  The app also has a “what goes where” feature to allow a person to input a certain item to get information on disposal or recycling. Download from the App Store or Google Play.

Property maintenance is the responsibility of the resident, from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley

In Louisville Metro, it is the responsibility of the person living in a home to keep the front and rear of the property clean. This area extends from the middle of the street out front to the middle of any alleyways to the rear or side of the property. This applies to litter as well as plants and trees that could impede the alleyway or street. Inspections, Permits and Licenses (IPL) could cite and possibly impose a fine if you've got a lot of debris and plant overgrowth. Thank you for adhering to the local property maintenance codes and keeping a clean neighborhood. 

Crisis line for veterans and their families

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.
