Jim Wayne named #1 Citizen

SACC logo

Congratulations to Jim Wayne, who was named Schnitzelburg's #1 Citizen yesterday evening at the 55th annual #1 Citizen's Dinner, a virtual ceremony due to COVID.

This year's #1 Citizen, Jim Wayne represented District 35 from 1990 until 2019 as a Democratic member of the Kentucky House of Representatives. He retired last year.

In the photo on the right, he is shown with his personalized Louisville Slugger baseball bat, part of the #1 Citizen award package, which also includes a personalized jacket (not shown).

As a representative, Wayne was a voice for the voiceless, a champion of tax reform, affordable housing, campus safety, enhancing penalties for sexual abuse of minors and protection of workers and the vulnerable.

He has assisted the Schnitzelburg area in many ways, including the improvements to Goss Avenue, a plan to improve Eastern Pkwy and relocation of neighborhoods severely impacted by expansion of the airport.

"We thank Jim for his decades of dedication to his constituents while in office," Councilman Mulvihill said, "in addition to a lifetime of fighting for poor and working class people. His contributions will not be forgotten."

The #1 Citizen award was started by George Hauck (the late owner of the former Hauck’s Handy Store on Goss Avenue) in 1966, to honor a friend of the Schnitzelburg neighborhood who quietly gave his time and effort to make the community greater. The first #1 Citizen, Kenny Schmied, served the community simply because he loved “ole Schnitzelburg.”
