Kentucky Transportation Cabinet moving forward with roadway reconfiguration on Bardstown Road

Pedestrian safety, safer travel speeds, increased on-street parking as project focus.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) District 5 Office will be moving forward with implementation of the roadway reconfiguration project of Bardstown Road between Eastern Parkway (US 60A) and the Baxter Avenue/Highland Avenue intersections.

The project will make Bardstown Road one-lane in each direction with turning lanes at most of the signalized intersections, with on-street parking /TARC stops on both sides, while increasing pedestrian safety, decreasing travel speeds and providing much needed parking in the area to support local businesses along the corridor.

The reconfiguration was initially tested in the spring and summer by removing parking signs and turning the lane assignment lights to the off-peak setting. The next stage of the implementation will focus on striping changes only and, will not require modifications to any of the traffic signals on the corridor. During this period, lane assignment arrows will be deactivated but not removed. Additionally, the Bardstown/Baxter Lane control signals in these blocks will also be deactivated but not removed.

The impetus for the proposed changes and trial were developed from the 2018 Bardstown Road Safety Study.

KYTC has scheduled the pavement marking modifications and necessary traffic control signage changes for November 4th and 5th from approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, weather permitting.

“The pavement marking process is a mobile operation, which will only cause minor delays intermittently throughout the day as the equipment drives the route to make the changes to the pavement markings. The overall project is expected to take two days to complete,” said Public Works Assistant Director, Jeff Brown.

No parking will be allowed on either side of the street along the entire work zone during these time frames. Once the temporary changes are in place, KYTC and Louisville Metro will monitor traffic.

Improving livability as Ashby Lane sidewalk project nears completion

Led by Transportation Engineer, Steve Kurowsky, phase one of saw the construction of 2,200 feet of sidewalk in summer 2019. Adding 1,300 more feet during phase two, the Ashby Lane sidewalk nears completion. The much-needed 3,500’- sidewalk is a welcomed addition to this Valley Station neighborhood (Southwestern Jefferson County). By building and maintaining our infrastructure, this project is part of our commitment to improving safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods. The $361,000 project became a reality thanks to commitment and partnership between Public Works & Assets’ Transportation & Engineering Division, Metro Councilwoman, Cindi Fowler (D-14), and the residents of this neighborhood who understood its importance. Leaf drop-off

Leaves

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!

Of course, residents with yard waste collection can also set them out in containers or paper bags. And all Louisville Metro residents will have the option to dispose of them for free at one of three drop-off sites beginning Tuesday, November 10.

Metro Public Works is offering a free leaf drop-off service November 10 through December 12. Drop-off will not be available on November 26 and 27 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only loose leaves will be accepted. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be disposed of off-site by residents.
