A MESSAGE FROM NICOLE GEORGE: TELLING THE "STORY OF HOW"

Having worked with state and local government throughout my professional career, I can say with great confidence that we as government fundamentally have a problem with communication. Many of us work hard every day listening and responding to the community, but what we have not done a good job of is telling the story of how change happens and linking those outcomes with community connection.

There are lots of legitimate reasons that can make telling the story difficult, such as 1) the amount of time it takes to see progress, 2) the need to partner with multiple agencies, and 3) the need to get the timing right in the execution. The consequences of this are grave and it results in communities not seeing the power they have to create change, or worse not understanding how something did or did not come to be!

Most improvements initiated within the D21 Council Office occurred because someone in our community took the time reach out. It was not because a councilperson or a public employee was “doing their job” independently. Public employees and public servants can attest that there is no shortage of jobs to be done. It is focus, not effort, that is often the hobgoblin of progress.

This edition of the newsletter is dedicated for ways to have your voice heard. If you are reading this newsletter chances are you do not need this message and likely your voice is already amplified through multiple channels. If that is true for you, then you are the outlier! I am committed to giving more focus to telling the story and making connections.

Last year, the Council Office was focused on an array of D21 focused improvements (Click here for the full list).

This focus was because of you because we went where the calls were and I am grateful to have such partners. However, if we are to have a more equitable community that works for everyone, everyone needs to see how it can work. This inspires motivation.

If you have ever been a part of a success on your block, take credit for your role in making it happen! Educate a neighbor on the steps it took and share realistic expectations for timeframes. Let's tell “the story of how” and it starts with your voice!

Absentee Ballot Requests

The deadline to apply online for an Absentee ballot is October 9, 2020 no later than 11:59 p.m. EST. Visit govoteky.com to request your ballot or to check the status of your ballot.

A Note About Drop Boxes

NOTICE: Currently, an absentee drop-off box is only available at the Jefferson County Clerk Election Center located at 701 W. Ormsby. Beginning October 13, additional drop-off boxes will be available at the Kentucky Exposition Center, KFC Yum! Center, Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and the Louisville Marriott East. Drop-off boxes will be available at all voting locations on Election Day until 6:00 p.m.

DISTRICT-WIDE PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING SURVEY

Did you know every Metro Council Office receives funding annually to support neighborhood development efforts and area nonprofits? In Fiscal Year 21, the amount was $65,000 per district. Would you like to influence how a portion of that funding is spent?

Please take a few minutes to:

1. Take this survey to lend your voice to drive decision making, both short and long term
2. Learn about participatory budgeting
3. Offer contributions by volunteering

Who can participate in this survey? Residents living in District 21 can submit ideas for the process. This includes the following neighborhoods and areas: Beechmont; Iroquois; City of Lynnview; North Audubon; Preston Park; Southland Park; Southside; Trinity Park and Evergreen Manor; Camp Taylor South, and Colonial Square Cooperative.

Will my responses be kept confidential? Yes. Names will be separated from the data before data is shared. Your records will be reviewed by the Office of District 21 and McNary Group, who is administering the survey. During the survey, you can opt into sharing your contact information if you wish to stay connected.

Name the Alley!

The community is invited to submit nominations to name the Woodlawn Alley. Submissions will be accepted until midnight on October 18th. A Steering Committee of community representatives will narrow submissions and the public will be asked to vote for the final selection from October 26th - November 8th. CLICK HERE. 

Call for artists! Alley Mural proposals due

Local artists are invited to submit proposals to complete a mural on the side Annie's Cafe in the alley on Woodlawn Avenue. Proposals will be accepted until midnight on November 6th. The mural will be completed by December 2020. CLICK HERE.

SATELLITE OFFICE HOURS IN THE CITY OF LYNNVIEW

We will be available the 3^rd Wednesday of each month at Lynnview City Hall (1241 Gilmore Ln. 40213) from 9am-3pm.

Note: The District 21 office uses this time to address issues in the area in addition to being at Lynnview City Hall. You may want to call ahead (502-966-4086) to make sure we will be in the office before you stop in.
