Voting information for the November 3rd Election

Things you can do now to help get ready for the election:

Absentee Ballots - Want to vote absentee in the November election because you are concerned about contracting or spreading COVID-19? The portal to request an absentee ballot is now open and can be requested through the website GoVoteKY.com
Registration - Also, you can register, change your registration or just check to make sure you are registered at GoVoteKY.com. The deadline to register online to vote in the 2020 General Election is October 5, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. local time.
Consider being a poll worker! - The Jefferson County Clerk is seeking both Democrats and Republicans to fill positions on November 3, in order to have more polling locations open for people who will vote in person. More information is here

Cast your ballot - There are three ways for Kentucky voters to cast their ballot for this November’s election:

In person early before Election Day beginning (Oct. 13–Nov. 2)
In person on Election Day (Nov. 3)
By absentee ballot (return by mail or ballot dropbox)

Visit Kentucky's Voter Information Portal to register to vote, request a mail-in ballot, find a ballot drop-box, find early voting locations, and access additional information about the upcoming election.

Census 2020 Deadline September 30 is Now 12 Days Away

As Census-takers begin visiting non-responding Louisville households, Mayor Greg Fischer and Municipal Complete Count Committee (MC3) members today urged residents to complete the 2020 Census.

You can also call 1-844-330-2020 to complete the survey over the phone. The census website is here.

Census Takers in our neighborhood

The Louisville Census Complete Count Committee and community leaders are urging residents to complete the Census before Sept. 30, and notes that Census Takers are visiting every household that has not already responded. In certain areas, the Census Bureau is also calling households, reminding them to respond. Census Takers will have a valid ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Census workers may also carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo.

CONSTRUCTION, ROADWORK & CLOSURES

Detour Occurring In Jefferson Memorial Forest Next Week

The closure will be at 11801 Holsclaw Hill Road in Jefferson Memorial Forest near the Horine Reservation area. Crews contracted by Metro Public Works will repair a failed pipe culvert and repave the area. The detour is anticipated for Tuesday 9/22 and Wednesday 9/23.

KY Transportation Road Updates - I-265

On-site Repair Work of I-265 West Ramp Begins

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 Office advises the public of on-site repair work scheduled on the ramp from KY 61 (Preston Highway) to I-265 West (Gene Snyder Freeway) in Jefferson County. Contract crews will mobilize on-site beginning the week of September 14. On-site work is scheduled to be completed by mid-October.

KY 61 North (Preston Highway) to I-265 East to Smyrna Road (Exit 14) to reconnect with I-265 West

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Visit goky.ky.gov for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

KYTC Advises Ramp Closures for Improvements 9-11-2020 to 9-14-2020

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of ramp improvements taking place in downtown Louisville this weekend. Multiple interstate ramps will be closed from 9 p.m. Friday, September 11 until 5 a.m. Monday, September 14.

Ramps to be closed include:

I-64 West to I-65 South
I-64 West to I-65 North
I-71 South to I-65 North
Story Ave to I-65 North & South
Story Ave to I-64 West

This work was originally scheduled to take place in August but was rescheduled due to rain. Closure of the ramps is necessary to perform signing & pavement marking modifications in the area locally known as “Spaghetti Junction.” These modifications are to better align with traffic volumes and will remove an undesired merge from I-71 South to I-65 North, which should allow traffic to flow more efficiently. While the ramps are closed, overhead signs will be installed to supplement the revised markings. All of the existing striping on the closed ramps will also be updated and refreshed.

The contracted work will mobilize this week and is expected to take 5 weeks. The time from the closure until now was spent preparing the actual repair plans and fabricating the necessary bridge components. These “parts” are not readily available and had to be fabricated after the plans were complete.

The detour is for drivers to go east on I-265 to Smyrna & comeback I-265 westbound. That is just short of 4 miles.

Changes for "BOO at the ZOO" This Year

Changes due to COVID-19:

"Boo at the Zoo" will start Oct. 1, and continue every Thursday through Sunday night through Oct. 31. Halloween guests will enter the zoo at their reserved times between 5 and 10 p.m.
Everyone is encouraged to wear costumes, and all guests over 5 must wear a mask to go down the route. The zoo will not be handing out individual pieces of candy, but will pass out small sealed treat bags.
The zoo said socially distanced photo opportunities will still be available with costumed characters.
Member tickets are on sale now for $6, while non-members can purchase tickets starting Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. Non-members can purchase tickets for $12.50. Children aged two and under do not require a ticket.
Tickets will cover the cost of Boo at the Zoo admission, parking, Spooktacular Carousel, “not-so itsy bitsy” Spider House and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow attraction.

In addition to the information you might expect to find (confirmed cases, positivity rate, etc.), a map of cases by zip code is available as well. This site also includes a list of testing locations, strategies to stop the spread of COVID-19, and other helpful information.

Free Financial Navigator Services Help Residents Deal with Financial Impact of COVID-19

The Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE) has awarded Bank On Louisville/Louisville Metro Government, in partnership with LHOME, a local Certified Development Financial Institution (CDFI), with an $80,000 grant to support the creation of a Financial Navigator program. The program is designed to help residents deal with the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, by receiving free, remote assistance in navigating critical financial issues and referrals to other social services and financial resources.

LHOME and the City of Louisville anticipate launching the service in mid to late September 2020. Visit HERE or LHOME for regular updates including how to apply and other details.

Applications will be accepted now through October 31, 2020, or until funds are depleted.
Jefferson County residents must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system.
Appointments by phone - call 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

JCPS Update - Nutrition Services

Jefferson County Public Schools are back in session, with classes scheduled remotely for the time being. School meals have changed due to federal guidelines.
Food sites will be open Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. – Noon.
Federal guidelines require that:

Children must be enrolled in Jefferson County Public Schools to receive meals.
Parents or guardians should present the barcode they received for each student OR be prepared to provide the name, date of birth and the school each child is enrolled in.
Only students eligible for free or reduced meals, including all students enrolled in schools where all students usually receive free meals, can receive free meals.

JCPS Fall Sports

Jefferson County Public Schools will have limited capacity during its fall sports season.

Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio said the general public will not be allowed to buy tickets this season. “Our plan will be to give a certain number of tickets based on capacity to every participant – that would include players, band members, cheerleaders, dancers, each would get a determined number of tickets to get to no more than that 20%,” he said.

Fall favorite Jack O'Lantern Spectacular is switching gears for 2020 to become a safe drive-thru-only event!

DATE: Thursday, October 1, 2020. The final day is Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020
LOCATION: Iroquois Park 5200 New Cut Rd.

Library News - Appointments for Computer Use

The Main Library will be open for computer appointments and the Southwest, South Central, and Northeast regionals. The browsing of books and other materials will not be permitted at this time.

Library Expands Curbside Pickup Hours

With the majority of Library employees now back at work after a three-month furlough, the Louisville Free Public Library is expanding curbside pick-up hours to include some evenings and Saturdays at all 17 library locations, as it works on plans to open library buildings. October 24th Louisville Earth Walk Goes Citywide

The annual Louisville Earth Walk is going city-wide this year out of respect for everyone’s safety during the CV-19 crisis. So while we will not gather together in one place at one time on Saturday, October 24th, everyone is invited to participate - from all across our city. Everyone is invited to join from wherever they are in support of a vision where every neighborhood has safe and clean water, air, and soil.

This year there are two exciting registration options: The 5K Walk option invites participants to get in their walk anytime on October 24 on their own favorite paths and routes or wherever. 5K Run This Saturday September 19th to Benefit Urban Forestry Program

Louisville Grows is hosting the inaugural Plant 5K Run & Walk on September 19th to support our Urban Forestry program. The event will take place at 100 West Riverside Drive, Jeffersonville, Indiana starting at 9am.

All proceeds benefit Louisville Grows’ urban forestry program and their goal of planting 5,000 trees by 2025. PLANT 5K is sponsored by Ale-8-One.

The facility where the city's recycling goes for sorting and processing reported that during the pandemic they've seen an increase in Styrofoam takeout containers and plastic shopping bags. Styrofoam containers may have a recycling symbol and a number on them, but that doesn't mean they're accepted in our recycling program! Those should go in the trash instead. Or try to avoid them in the first place!

Plastic shopping bags are only recyclable through participating retail stores. Do not put in your recycling container. Avoid them by bringing your own bags to the store instead! Check out Kroger's infographic showing all the types of plastic you can recycle at their stores.

September Responsible Dog Ownership - Get A Microchip

September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. Only 1 of 3 lost pets will be reunited with their owner. Make sure your pet always has a ticket home, if they become lost. LMAS offers microchipping services for $25 and you don’t need an appointment. Get your pet microchipped Monday-Saturday from 12-6pm, at the LMAS Shelter, located at 3528 Newburg Road.

Is your pet already microchipped but you’re not sure how to update your contact information? LMAS uses microchips from Home Again. To update your contact info, visit homegain.com. You can also check your pet’s adoption records to find the microchip company’s contact info, or visit a veterinary office or the LMAS Shelter, to have your pet scanned for a microchip. COVID-19 Pet Guidelines

At this time, there is no evidence that humans can contract COVID-19 from pets, however it is strongly advised not to let pets interact with other people or pets outside of your household. LMAS is taking additional precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Animal Control will only respond to the most serious incidents involving a human and domestic animal in-progress, or to assist first responders.

LMAS will remain open for adoptions, lost and found services, and stray pet surrenders from 12-6pm, Monday-Saturday. Violations and civil penalty fees can be paid online at www.louisvilleky.gov/animal-services. Pet licensing can also be purchased or renewed online or by mail. COVID-19 Pet Food Bank Assists Pets Owners in Need Due to Coronavirus

The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is opening up a pet food bank to assist pet owners who are experiencing job loss or financial crisis because of the coronavirus pandemic. The pet food bank is made possible by a donation from GreaterGood.org and Eukanuba Nutrition, as well as donations from local citizens.

Distribution will be done alphabetically by last name. Pick up will be each day from 9-11am, and clients are asked to remain in their cars for curbside assistance. Assistance will be available while supplies last.

Pick up is 9-11am weekdays, by last names beginning with:

A-E: Monday
F-J: Tuesday
K-O: Wednesday
P-T: Thursday
U-Z: Friday
